Book Spent Fuel Monitoring with Silicon Carbide Semiconductor Neutron Gamma Detectors

Download or read book Spent Fuel Monitoring with Silicon Carbide Semiconductor Neutron Gamma Detectors written by J. G. Seidel and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 8 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Silicon carbide semiconductor radiation detectors have been demonstrated for neutron and gamma-ray monitoring of spent nuclear fuel. Neutrons and gamma rays were monitored simultaneously over a 2050-h period, resulting in a gamma dose of over 6000 Gy to the SiC detector. No changes in the neutron and gamma-ray sensitivity were observed as a result of the gamma-ray exposure. After the spent-fuel measurements, the absolute neutron sensitivity was determined in a standard neutron field, and the degree of gamma-ray and neutron spectrum overlap were determined through exposures in intense gamma ray fields. No overlap was observed for gamma-ray dose rates up to 100 G/h.

Book Neutron and Gamma Ray Dosimetry in Spent Fuel Radiation Environments Using Silicon Carbide Semiconductor Radiation Detectors

Download or read book Neutron and Gamma Ray Dosimetry in Spent Fuel Radiation Environments Using Silicon Carbide Semiconductor Radiation Detectors written by JG. Seidel and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 8 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Silicon carbide semiconductor radiation detectors are resistant to radiation induced damage and can be operated at elevated and changing temperatures., Silicon carbide radiation detectors have been shown to have linear responses to both neutrons and gamma rays. Furthermore, these responses are separable on the basis of pulse height, making simultaneous monitoring of both neutrons and gamma rays possible. The neutron and gamma ray sensitivities of silicon carbide radiation detectors are well-matched to the radiation environments characteristic of spent nuclear fuel. Measurements have been carried out in mixed gamma/neutron fields in a hot cell and at a reactor facility under conditions chosen to approximate the radiation fields typically encountered in the vicinity of spent nuclear fuel assemblies. The results of these measurements and the application of silicon carbide radiation detectors to spent fuel dosimetry are discussed.

Book Characterization of Neutron Irradiated Accident Tolerant Nuclear Fuel Cladding Silicon Carbide Radiation Detector Deadtime

Download or read book Characterization of Neutron Irradiated Accident Tolerant Nuclear Fuel Cladding Silicon Carbide Radiation Detector Deadtime written by Bader J. Almutairi and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 187 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In part I, the pulse shape characteristics generated by a Geiger Muller (GM) detector and recorded by an oscilloscope manually, were investigated. The objective of part I was (1) to find a correlation between pulse shape and the operating voltage; and (2) to assess if pulse shape properties followed distinct patterns comparable to detector deadtime findings reported by a previous study. It was observed that (1) there is a strong correlation between pulse shape and operating voltage, and (2) pulse shape falls in three distinct regions similar to detector deadtime. Furthermore, parts II and III are companions and share the same experimental setup designed to simultaneously measure the GM detector's deadtime, and capture and record the generated pulses by an oscilloscope automatically. Four different pairs of radioactive sources (204Tl, 137Cs, 22Na, 54Mn) were used. For part II, it was observed that deadtime dependence on operating voltage followed a distinct pattern while using 204Tl, 137Cs, 22Na except for 54Mn.For part III, it was found that there is a strong correlation between deadtime behavior and several pulse shape properties. In addition to part I-III, part IV focused on the characterization of accident tolerant fuel cladding SiC for high burnup SMR core. First, reactor physics modeling for various accident tolerant fuel claddings was performed. It was found that SiC outperforms all other cladding candidates in terms of discharge burnup. Second, an experimental setup was designed to characterize weight loss and mechanical strength of SiC by examining the effects of neutron-irradiation in harsh environments. It was observed that (1) irradiated samples were more prone to material weight loss at higher temperatures, and (2) mechanical strength for control, non-irradiated, and irradiated samples were comparable"--Abstract, page iv.

Book Design And Development Of A Liquid Scintillator Based System For Failed Fuel Detection And Locating System In Nuclear Reactors

Download or read book Design And Development Of A Liquid Scintillator Based System For Failed Fuel Detection And Locating System In Nuclear Reactors written by and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Failed fuel refers to the breach in the fuel-clad of an irradiated fuel assembly in a nuclear reactor. Neutron detection or gamma detection is commonly used in Failed Fuel Detection and Locating (FFDL) system to monitor the activity of the coolant. Though these methods offer specific advantages under different conditions of the coolant, providing both types of detectors in FFDL system is impractical. This limitation is the motivation for the detector system developed in the present work. In the present work, effort has been made for realising a detector system for simultaneous measurement of neutron and gamma activity of the coolant, thus offering a two-parameter basis for failed fuel detection. NE213 liquid scintillator was chosen for this work as it has good detection capability for both neutrons and gammas. Additionally, the neutrons and gammas interacting with NE213 detector can be separated based on pulse shape discrimination. The work reported in this thesis includes fabrication details and different steps followed in assembling the NE213 detector. Details of experimental set-up developed for pulse height analysis and pulse shape analysis are covered. Results of experiments carried out to study the response of the NE213 detector to gamma and neutron sources using pulse height analyser are presented. The absolute gamma efficiency and relative gamma efficiency of NE213 detector are calculated. Neutron- amma separation capability of NE213 detector based pulse shape analysis system is reported. Application of the developed detector system to analyse the coolant activity in FFDL system in a reactor is described. Response of the detector is compared with the existing FFDL system at different power levels of the reactor. Since failed fuel is a rare event, it was simulated using neutron and gamma sources. Pulse shape analysis spectra obtained under simulated failed fuel condition are presented.
