Book La Follette s Autobiography

Download or read book La Follette s Autobiography written by Robert Marion La Follette and published by . This book was released on 1913 with total page 878 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The autobiography of Robert La Follette (1855-1925) traces the political life and accomplishments of this eminent Republican politician from his election as district attorney for Dane County, Wisconsin in 1880 to the presidential campaign of 1912, when his bid to dislodge President William Howard Taft was pushed aside by former president Theodore Roosevelt on the Progressive Party's national ticket. The book emphasizes tactics, strategies, and coalition-building as well as La Follette's assessments of various local and national public figures. We learn little about La Follette's childhood, education, legal training or family life, although he does pay tribute to his wife, a lawyer and civic reformer in her own right. La Follette served three terms in Congress (1885-1891); and after a decade of private law practice and grassroots activism, was elected Wisconsin's governor (1900-1904). From 1905 until his death, La Follette was a senator. He crusaded at state and national level against powerful, unregulated business interests--especially the railroads--which he felt exerted undue influence upon government. He also championed open primary elections, equitable taxation of corporations, and public management of public resources by highly qualified, non-partisan public servants. While many of these influential reforms were instituted at the state level during his governorship, his contribution in the Senate may have had less to do with his legislative record than with his ability to rally forces around well-articulated programs.

Book Grant s Tomb

Download or read book Grant s Tomb written by Louis L. Picone and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2021-02-16 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The moving story of Ulysses S. Grant's final battle, and the definitive account of the national memorial honoring him as one of America's most enduring heroes The final resting place of Ulysses S. Grant, the victorious general in the Civil War and the eighteenth president of the United States, is a colossal neoclassical tomb located in the most dynamic city in the country. It is larger than the final resting place of any other president or any other person in America. Since its creation, the popularity and condition of this monument, built to honor the man and what he represented to a grateful nation at the time of his death, a mere twenty years after the end of the Civil War, have reflected not only Grant's legacy in the public mind but also the state of New York City and of the Union. In this fascinating, deeply researched book, presidential historian Louis L. Picone recounts the full story. He begins with Grant's heroic final battle during the last year of his life, to complete his memoirs in order to secure his family's financial future while contending with painful, incurable cancer. Grant accomplished this just days before his death, and his memoirs, published by Mark Twain, became a bestseller. Accompanying his account with numerous period photographs, Picone narrates the national response to Grant's passing and how his tomb came to be: the intense competition to be the resting place for Grant's remains, the origins of the memorial and its design, the struggle to finance and build it over the course of twelve years, and the vicissitudes of its afterlife in the history of the nation up to recent times.

This book was released on 2021 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book analyses the fundamental aspects of the Constitution of the United States of America, which has proven to be a reality in motion and with an 'exceptional' capacity to adapt to the rapid and profound changes that have occurred in over two centuries in American society and economy. The book aims to better understand how the constitutional text has evolved up to our times. The 27 amendments to the Constitution, the interpretation of the Supreme Court and the particular political system have ensured that the constitutional system has not undergone major institutional upheavals. Thanks to the contribution of the many authors, the book offers valuable insights into a constitutional system that still reveals an extraordinary relevance. This can be considered an added value to studies in the field of comparative law. Bron: Flaptekst, uitgeversinformatie.
