Book excerpt: “Effective in showing the sheer depth and virulence of white supremacy in the South . . . This book and the story it tells should keep us vigilant at protecting our political rights, rendered sacred in the blood of Reconstruction, and beyond.”—The New York Sun A gripping look at terrorist violence during the Reconstruction era Between 1867, when the defeated South was forced to establish new state governments that fully represented both black and white citizens, and 1877, when the last of these governments was overthrown, more than three thousand African Americans and their white allies were killed by terrorist violence. Drawing on original letters and diaries as well as published racist diatribes of the time, acclaimed historian Stephen Budiansky concentrates his vivid, fast paced narrative on the efforts of five heroic men—two Union officers, a Confederate general, a Northern entrepreneur, and a former slave—who showed remarkable idealism and courage as they struggled to establish a New South in the face of overwhelming hatred and organized resistance. The Bloody Shirt sheds new light on the violence, racism, division, and heroism of Reconstruction, a largely forgotten but epochal chapter in American history.

Book excerpt: The pamphlet shown here is a collection of speeches by Robert Smalls spoken during the Constitutional Convention in South Carolina, where many of the proposed changes to the constitutions were designed with the intention of disenfranchising African-Americans residing in South Carolina. Smalls was a district representative from South Carolina, and is also known as a publisher, businessman, and maritime pilot. Born into slavery in Beaufort, South Carolina, he freed himself, his crew, and their families during the American Civil War by commandeering a Confederate transport ship, CSS Planter, in Charleston harbor, on May 13, 1862, and sailing it from Confederate-controlled waters of the harbor to the U.S. blockade that surrounded it.

Book Speech of Hon James H Hammond of South Carolina on the Admission of Kansas Under the Lecompton Constitution

This book was released on 2016-11-30 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Speech of Hon. James H. Hammond, of South Carolina, on the Admission of Kansas, Under the Lecompton Constitution: Delivered in the Senate of the United States, March 4, 1856 If what I have said be correct, then the will of the people of Kansas is to be found in the action of her constitutional convention. It is immaterial whether it is the will of a majority of the people of Kansas now, or not. The conven tion was, or might have been, elected by a majority of the people of Kansas. A convention, elected in April, may well frame a constitution that would not be agreeable to a major ity of the people of a new State, rapidly filling up, in the succeeding January and if Legislatures are to be allowed to put to vote the acts of a convention, and have them an nulled by a subsequent in ux of immigrants, there is no final ity. If you were to send back the Lecompton constitution, and another was to be framed, in the slow way in whichtwe de public business in this country, before it would reach Conn gress and be passed, perhaps the majority would be turned the other way. Whenever you outside of the regular forms of law and constitutions to seek for the will of the people you are wandering in a wilderness - a wilderness of thorns.
