Book Living with Disfigurement

Download or read book Living with Disfigurement written by Poppy Nash and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author argues that the current approach to cleft lip/palate highlights the visible and audible aspects of the cleft, often to the exclusion of the less detectable and insidious psychosocial aspects. Existing literature tends to focus upon what the Cleft Palate Team can 'do' for the patient, who is thereby encouraged to adopt a role of passive dependence upon the specialists. This book redresses the balance by presenting significant new findings from a follow-up study, which shows the need to re-think cleft-related 'treatment' in terms of whole person management. Only then can the patient be equipped with the necessary psychological 'survival' kit to live a fulfilling life, during and after hospital treatment. This book is essential reading for anyone interested in the psychosocial welfare of those who look and/or sound different to others, in the context of facial disfigurement and speech impairment.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dr. Kummer's Cleft Palate and Craniofacial Anomalies: Effects on Speech and Resonance provides comprehensive coverage of a complex subject in a logical progression of learning in which each chapter builds on information from the previous chapter. This is the only text of its kind that covers both oral and facial anomalies in addition to cleft lip and palate. Designed for students, clinicians new to this population, and any member of a cleft palate team, this book emphasizes what practicing clinicians need to know in the workplace. Current research and best practices are summarized for readers. From basic information on anatomy, physiology, and embryololgy of the face and oral cavity to oral, dental and ENT anomalies and their effects on speech, resonance, and feeding this book includes information on common craniofacial anomalies, associated anomalies, and genetic syndromes. The evaluation section includes the perceptual evaluation of speech and resonance, the intraoral examination, and instrumental assessment procedures. The treatment section includes surgical procedures, prosthetic devices, and therapies designed to address speech, resonance, and velopharyngeal dysfunction. The need for multidisciplinary team assessment and treatment is emphasized throughout with contributions from members of a working cleft palate team.

Book Psychosocial Aspects of Cleft Lip and Palate

Download or read book Psychosocial Aspects of Cleft Lip and Palate written by Mirjam Kalland and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study focused on the psychosocial aspects of cleft lip and/or palate on maternal emotional reactions and the family, with emphasis on the effect on the maternal-infant bond. Interviews were conducted with 40 mothers of 1-year-old infants with non-syndromic cleft lip and/or palate. The interviews were analyzed using the phenomenological method, which is explained. The focus was the unique interpretation of the mothers' experiences. The main result was that a defect that interfered with feeding disturbed the early maternal-infant bonding process more than a defect that only interfered with the child's appearance. Additional findings include: the birth of a child with a cleft is considered a shock by most mothers; the most severe problem has been the feeding problem; surgery, even if desired, is considered as a shock by most of the mothers; feelings of depression, fear, or bitterness are common among mothers of infants with a cleft; and the information that the mothers received at the hospital when the baby was born was inadequate. Descriptions are included for three cases involving different types of cleft: cleft palate, cleft lip, and cleft lip and palate. Implications for parent education are discussed, such as the importance of providing parental support to facilitate successful parenting, parents' need for information, and the importance of contact and a sense of community.
