Download or read book Speech and Voice written by Leopold Stein and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-10-26 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1942, this title was recognised as setting new standards in the scientific approach to speech problems. Much speech therapy in the past had been unsatisfactory because of its emphasis upon the purely mechanical aspects of the condition, while at the same time the purely psychological approach was not sufficient to lead to satisfactory and radical treatment either. In this title the author combines the two approaches and by setting out the basic pathology of the various conditions, he throws new light upon them. Today it can be read and enjoyed in its historical context.

Book Analysis of Pathological Speech Signals

Download or read book Analysis of Pathological Speech Signals written by Tomás Arias-Vergara and published by Logos Verlag Berlin GmbH. This book was released on 2022-12-15 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book addresses the automatic analysis of speech disorders resulting from a clinical condition (Parkinson's disease and hearing loss) or the natural aging process. For Parkinson's disease, the progression of speech symptoms is evaluated by considering speech recordings captured in the short-term (4 months) and long-term (5 years). Machine learning methods are used to perform three tasks: (1) automatic classification of patients vs. healthy speakers. (2) regression analysis to predict the dysarthria level and neurological state. (3) speaker embeddings to analyze the progression of the speech symptoms over time. For hearing loss, automatic acoustic analysis is performed to evaluate whether the duration and onset of deafness (before or after speech acquisition) influence the speech production of cochlear implant users. Additionally, articulation, prosody, and phonemic analyses show that cochlear implant users present altered speech production even after hearing rehabilitation.

Book Advances in Functional Linguistics

Download or read book Advances in Functional Linguistics written by Joseph Davis and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2006-12-20 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection carries the functionalist Columbia School of linguistics forward with contributions on linguistic theory, semiotics, phonology, grammar, lexicon, and anthropology. Columbia School linguistics views language as a symbolic tool whose structure is shaped both by its communicative function and by the characteristics of its users, and considers contextual, pragmatic, physical, and psychological factors in its analyses. This volume builds upon three previous Columbia School anthologies and further explores issues raised in them, including fundamental theoretical and analytical questions. And it raises new issues that take Columbia School “beyond its origins.” The contributions illustrate both consistency since the school’s inception over thirty years ago and innovation spurred by groundbreaking analysis. The volume will be of interest to all functional linguists and historians of linguistics. Languages analyzed include Byelorussian, English, Japanese, Serbo-Croatian, Spanish, and Swahili.

Furthermore, they have clear implications for language and speech therapy and thus show the importance of linguistic concepts for language testing and therapeutic intervention.
