Western Plainchant in the First Millenium offers new information and new insights about a period of crucial importance in the growth of the liturgy and music of the Western Church.

Book Art as History History as Art

Download or read book Art as History History as Art written by Stephen Graham Hitchins and published by Brepols Publishers. This book was released on 2014 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book challenges many of the assumptions about Jheronimus Bosch and Pieter Bruegel the Elder. The academic contest to unravel these two has never abated. What exactly is the meaning of their work is one of art history's blood sports. The answer lies in the cultural relationship between the artwork and its audience. Both artists demonstrate social, economic and political resonances in paintings that are numbingly familiar yet still poorly understood. There is social, religious, and political motivation in their art, an art that is frequently described in art historical isolation. For Bosch the image was a morality play about the paucity of good in a world teeming with evil monsters. For Bruegel it was frequently a reference to political events. Far from producing puzzle pictures they were assembling knowledge as part of a visual culture that was central to the life of society. It relates to the knowledge of the world at a particular time and two artists' experiences of it. It stretches from the sexuality and spirituality of Bosch to secular satisfaction in Bruegel at a time of social upheaval and a great turning point of world history - the beginning of the modern world and the end of the Middle Ages.

Book Choral Conducting

Download or read book Choral Conducting written by Colin Durrant and published by . This book was released on 2017-10-10 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Choral Conducting: Philosophy and Practice, Second Edition is an updated resource for conductors and singers alike, a college-level text for students of choral conducting that considers conducting and singing from a holistic perspective. This singer-friendly and voice-healthy approach examines the rehearsal environment alongside its musical performance counterpart. The author explores what is involved in leading a choral group, examining theories of learning and human behavior to understand the impact choral conductors have on the act of singing. Divided into two main parts--Philosophy and Practice--the text begins with an historical look at conducting, exploring questions of why people sing and why they sing together, and ultimately presents the application of this philosophy, showing how a conductor's gestures and patterns can influence vocal outcomes. In addressing how singers learn and respond to choral music, as well as how conductors communicate with singers in rehearsal and performance, Choral Conducting turns an eye to learning how we learn and the role successful choral conductors play in motivating singers, developing healthy singing habits, and improving individual and ensemble vocal quality--all with the aims of enhancing musical understanding. New to this edition: Updated diagrams, photos, and musical examples Revised sample choral programs Increased consideration of the orchestral conductor A renewed focus on the intersections of learning, health and well-being, and the social perspective, supported by new and recent research

  • Publisher : John Benjamins Publishing Company
  • Release : 1988

  • Pages : 246 pages

Download or read book Joachim Patinir written by Reindert Leonard Falkenburg and published by John Benjamins Publishing Company. This book was released on 1988 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study of Patinir's landscapes sets out to demonstrate that they are grounded in the moral and religious thought of his time and closely related to late Medieval devotional art. The first part demonstrates that the figural elements in Patinir's landscapes are based on a type of 'devotional image (Andachtsbild) with secondary scene's that goes back to the paintings of Van der Weyden and Memling. The second part of the book contains an iconographic analysis of the landscape itself, particularly in The Penitence of St Jerome in the Louvre, Paris, and in three paintings in the Prado, Madrid: Landscape with St Jerome, Charon and Man's Soul and Rest on the Flight into Egypt. The book argues that these images are determined by the allegories of the pilgrimage of life and of life's two paths.

Book Imagination Meditation and Cognition in the Middle Ages

Download or read book Imagination Meditation and Cognition in the Middle Ages written by Michelle Karnes and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2011-09-15 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Imagination, Meditation, and Cognition in the Middle Ages, Michelle Karnes revises the history of medieval imagination with a detailed analysis of its role in the period’s meditations and theories of cognition. Karnes here understands imagination in its technical, philosophical sense, taking her cue from Bonaventure, the thirteenth-century scholastic theologian and philosopher who provided the first sustained account of how the philosophical imagination could be transformed into a devotional one. Karnes examines Bonaventure’s meditational works, the Meditationes vitae Christi, the Stimulis amoris, Piers Plowman, and Nicholas Love’s Myrrour, among others, and argues that the cognitive importance that imagination enjoyed in scholastic philosophy informed its importance in medieval meditations on the life of Christ. Emphasizing the cognitive significance of both imagination and the meditations that relied on it, she revises a long-standing association of imagination with the Middle Ages. In her account, imagination was not simply an object of suspicion but also a crucial intellectual, spiritual, and literary resource that exercised considerable authority.
