Book Variational Methods in Nuclear Reactor Physics

Download or read book Variational Methods in Nuclear Reactor Physics written by Weston M. Jr. Stacey and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nuclear Science and Technology, Volume 10: Variational Methods in Nuclear Reactor Physics presents the mathematical methods of a variational origin that are useful in obtaining approximate solutions to science and engineering problems. This book is composed of five chapters and begins with a discussion on the variation principles for physical systems described by both inhomogeneous and homogeneous equations to develop a generalized perturbation theory. Chapter 2 deals with the applications of variational estimates and generalized perturbation theory to neutron transport problems. Chapter 3 covers the variation principles of the Lagrangian form that are constructed for a general, linear- time-dependent process and for the specific case of the P1 neutron kinetics equations. Chapter 4 presents the general procedure for the variational derivation of synthesis approximations and their applications to problems in reactor physics. This chapter also examines the relationship of the spatial synthesis and finite-element method and a hybrid method that combines features of both methods. Chapter 5 describes the relationship of variation theory with the Hamilton-Jacobi theory and with the optimization theories of the maximum principle and dynamic programming. Nuclear physicists and researchers will find this text invaluable.

Book The Impact of Spectral Effects in Fast Reactors on Data Analysis and Development of Fission fusion Correlations

Download or read book The Impact of Spectral Effects in Fast Reactors on Data Analysis and Development of Fission fusion Correlations written by and published by . This book was released on 1991 with total page 13 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Models describing the production of freely migrating defects (FMD) during neutron irradiations were applied to materials studies in fast reactors, where neutron spectral effects have been largely ignored. Calculations for the Experimental Breeder Reactor 2 (EBR-2) and the Fast Flux Test Facility (FFTF) show that effects of spectral differences between in-core and out-of-core positions are significantly larger on the basis of freely migrating defects than on the basis of dpa. As an example, data on swelling behavior measured both in-core and out-of-core in EBR-2 show nearly a linear dependence on FMD production but not on dpa.

Book Analysis of Fast Reactor Filter Spectra in the Advanced Test Reactor and Neutron Spectral Measurement at Idaho Accelerator Center

Download or read book Analysis of Fast Reactor Filter Spectra in the Advanced Test Reactor and Neutron Spectral Measurement at Idaho Accelerator Center written by Jyothier Kumar Nimmagadda and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The goal of the project MANTRA is to obtain important integral information on the cross sections for actinides in reasonable short periods of time through a novel approach. The novelty of this project mainly depends on using the facility Accelerator Mass Spectroscopy (AMS) at Argonne National Laboratory (ANL) which is known for providing very precise measurements of various actinides that were built up during the irradiation process. The irradiation process for MANTRA is carried out in the Advanced Test Reactor (ATR) at the Idaho National Laboratory (INL). The initial requirement of this project was the selection of neutron flux wire monitors by considering the neutron spectrum generated in a special test location at the ATR will be a close representative to that of a Fast Neutron Reactor (FNR). This fast spectrum can be achieved by using different filters to get rid of thermal and epithermal neutrons. The flux wire monitors were selected by considering the fluxes for each filter, a year wait time, one irradiation cycle (55 days), the expected activity after a year wait time to be 500 Bq and 1000 Bq and by following the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) standards. The neutron spectra for these flux wire monitors inside the capsules used for MANTRA were determined using the Monte Carlo simulation code. An experiment was carried out at the Idaho Accelerator Center (IAC) with sample materials including some of the neutron flux wires short listed for MANTRA. The 44 MeV Short Pulse Linear Accelerator (LINAC) at the IAC was used to irradiate the sample wires enclosed inside the cutoff materials and 47 gold foils placed in between Poly Methyl Methacrylate (PMMA) sheets. An unfolding package UMG 3.3 was used to reconstruct the neutron spectrum using the activities measured from these irradiated samples at JAC (1).

Book Two lump Fission Product Model for Fast Reactor Analysis

Download or read book Two lump Fission Product Model for Fast Reactor Analysis written by and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As a part of the Fast-Mixed Spectrum Reactor (FMSR) Project, a study was made on the adequacy of the conventional fission product lump models for the analysis of the different FMSR core concepts. A two-lump fission product model consisting of an odd-A fission product lump and an even-A fission product lump with transmutation between the odd- and even-A lumps was developed. This two-lump model is capable of predicting the exact burnup-dependent behavior of the fission products within a few percent over a wide range of spectra and is therefore also applicable to the conventional fast breeder reactor.
