Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Analytical flame spectroscopy is a rich and growing disci pline, rooted in the broad fields of physics and chemistry. Its applications abound not only in these large areas, but also thrive in the geosciences, materials science, and clinical and biochemical analysis. As an inevitable corollary of the field's growth, the scientist seeking to develop a fluent expertise has been forced to assimilate and master a rapidly increasing quantity of information. Our guiding hope in creating the present work has therefore been to provide the investigator with a single reference source for nearly all the material ever likely to be required in the daily conduct of basic or applied research. Flame spectroscopy is not a new analytical field. It has seen at least three major eras, in each of which much new information was developed - the Bunsen-Kirchhoff years, the Beckman D. U. years, and finally the atomic absorption years. In the Bunsen-Kirchhoff era, several new elements were discovered. During the Beckman years - nearly all the early flame emission data were taken on modified Beckman D. U. spectrometers - trace metal analysis for the alkaline metals and for many alkaline earth elements reached a new high (low?) - the parts per million level. More recently, trace metal analysis has in general achieved a new maturity with the advent of atomic absorption analysis, which was co-discovered by C. Th. J. Alkemade and Alan Walsh in 1955.

Download or read book Spectroscopy and Optical Diagnostics for Gases written by Ronald K. Hanson and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-10-26 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This text provides an introduction to the science that governs the interaction of light and matter (in the gas phase). It provides readers with the basic knowledge to exploit the light-matter interaction to develop quantitative tools for gas analysis (i.e. optical diagnostics) and understand and interpret the results of spectroscopic measurements. The authors pair the basics of gas‐phase spectroscopy with coverage of key optical diagnostic techniques utilized by practicing engineers and scientists to measure fundamental flow‐field properties. The text is organized to cover three sub‐topics of gas‐phase spectroscopy: (1) spectral line positions, (2) spectral line strengths, and (3) spectral lineshapes by way of absorption, emission, and scattering interactions. The latter part of the book describes optical measurement techniques and equipment. Key subspecialties include laser induced fluorescence, tunable laser absorption spectroscopy, and wavelength modulation spectroscopy. It is ideal for students and practitioners across a range of applied sciences including mechanical, aerospace, chemical, and materials engineering.

Download or read book Laser Diagnostics and Optical Measurement Techniques in Internal Combustion Engines written by Hua Zhao and published by SAE International. This book was released on 2012-07-30 with total page 373 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The increasing concern about CO2 emissions and energy prices has led to new CO2 emission and fuel economy legislation being introduced in world regions served by the automotive industry. In response, automotive manufacturers and Tier-1 suppliers are developing a new generation of internal combustion (IC) engines with ultra-low emissions and high fuel efficiency. To further this development, a better understanding is needed of the combustion and pollutant formation processes in IC engines. As efficiency and emission abatement processes have reached points of diminishing returns, there is more of a need to make measurements inside the combustion chamber, where the combustion and pollutant formation processes take place. However, there is currently no good overview of how to make these measurements. Based on the author’s previous SAE book, Engine Combustion Instrumentation and Diagnostics, this book focuses on laser-based optical techniques for combustion flows and in-cylinder measurements. Included are new chapters on optical engines and optical equipment, case studies, and an updated description of each technique. The purpose of this book is to provide, in one publication, an introduction to experimental techniques that are best suited for in-cylinder engine combustion measurements. It provides sufficient details for readers to set up and apply these techniques to IC engines and combustion flows.

Download or read book Determination of Primary zone Smoke Concentrations from Spectral Radiance Measurements in Gas Turbine Combustors written by Carl T. Norgren and published by . This book was released on 1971 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The smoke concentration within the primary zone of an experimental combustor operating at pressures up to 20 atmospheres was determined with a technique using spectral radiance measurements. Exhaust smoke concentration was obtained from reflectance readings of stained filter paper. The primary zone smoke concentration was of the order of 100 to 1000 times greater than at the exhaust. The smoke oxidation rate obtained is compared with reported values for coal particles and seeded laboratory flames. Primary zone smoke concentration was shown to be related to exhaust smoke number and total radiance.
