Book Spectroscopy and Optical Diagnostics for Gases

Download or read book Spectroscopy and Optical Diagnostics for Gases written by Ronald K. Hanson and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-10-26 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This text provides an introduction to the science that governs the interaction of light and matter (in the gas phase). It provides readers with the basic knowledge to exploit the light-matter interaction to develop quantitative tools for gas analysis (i.e. optical diagnostics) and understand and interpret the results of spectroscopic measurements. The authors pair the basics of gas‐phase spectroscopy with coverage of key optical diagnostic techniques utilized by practicing engineers and scientists to measure fundamental flow‐field properties. The text is organized to cover three sub‐topics of gas‐phase spectroscopy: (1) spectral line positions, (2) spectral line strengths, and (3) spectral lineshapes by way of absorption, emission, and scattering interactions. The latter part of the book describes optical measurement techniques and equipment. Key subspecialties include laser induced fluorescence, tunable laser absorption spectroscopy, and wavelength modulation spectroscopy. It is ideal for students and practitioners across a range of applied sciences including mechanical, aerospace, chemical, and materials engineering.

Book Measuring Gas Composition And Temperature In Highly Particle Laden Flow Using Terahertz Spectroscopy

Download or read book Measuring Gas Composition And Temperature In Highly Particle Laden Flow Using Terahertz Spectroscopy written by James Andrew Loh and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work veriďŹ es that THz radiation has the potential to be used as gas sensors in industrial furnaces. Testing proved that THz signals do not attenuate due to particle scattering, of particle sizes common in furnace ducts. High-temperature (773 K) H2O vapor and room temperature CO can be measured quantitatively with terahertz (THz) spectroscopy in the frequency range of 0.5-0.9 THz. THz spectroscopy is also used with two diďŹ erent methods to perform gas temperature measurement: using the area ratio of two H2O vapor absorbance peaks, and using the relative time delay of the THz signal. The absorbance peak ratios were tested in the frequency range of 0.5 - 0.8 THz at temperatures of 523 - 773 K. The time delay was tested at a frequency of 0.5 THz and temperatures of 293 - 773 K, and is used to determine temperature by calculating the index of refraction of the gas.

Book Determination of Gas Temperatures from Laser Raman Scattering

Download or read book Determination of Gas Temperatures from Laser Raman Scattering written by Jack A. Salzman and published by . This book was released on 1971 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An investigation was conducted on the feasibility of using Raman scattered laser light to measure local gas temperatures. Temperature error predictions were made based on the statistics of the scattering process and Raman spectral theory. Methods were developed for the calculation of temperature measurement accuracies as a function of Raman signal for different spectral line ratio schemes. The results of these theoretical calculations were compared with experimental rotational Raman data obtained from a laboratory-constructed Raman spectrophotometer. Nitrogen was used as a gas sample for a range of controlled temperatures from 253 to 313 K and pressures from 0. 5 to 5.0 atmospheres.

Book Optical Diagnostic System for the Measurement of Gas Temperature and Species Concentration

Download or read book Optical Diagnostic System for the Measurement of Gas Temperature and Species Concentration written by P. M. Hughes and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page 33 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "A technique termed "coherent, anti-Stokes Raman spectroscopy" (CARS) has been developed at the Combustion and Carbonization Research Laboratory of CANMET's Energy Research Laboratories for the measurement of temperature and species concentration. The advantages of this technique over conventional probing methods are improved temporal and spatial resolution; it is nonintrusive and turbulence parameters can be determined. This report discusses the theoretical basis for such a technique and some of the practical considerations involved in the optical arrangement. To apply this technique successfully, it was necessary to develop sophisticated software and hardware. The incorporation of these and the optics into a CARS system is discussed, together with the theory of its application"--Abstract, p. iii.

Book Temperature Measurement Using Infrared Spectral Band Emissions from

Download or read book Temperature Measurement Using Infrared Spectral Band Emissions from written by Daniel Jared Ellis and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 53 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Currently there is no known method for accurately measuring the temperature of the gas phase of combustion products within a solid fuel flame. The industry standard is a suction pyrometer and thermocouple which is intrusive, both spatially and temporally averaging, and difficult to use. In this work a new method utilizing the spectral emission from water vapor is investigated through modeling and experimental measurements. This method was demonstrated along a 0.75m line of sight, averaged over 1 minute in the products of a natural gas flame but has the potential to produce a spatial resolution on the order of 5 cm and a temporal resolution of less than 1 millisecond. The method employs the collection of infrared emission from water vapor over discrete wavelength bands and then uses the ratio of those emissions to infer temperature. A 12.5 mm lens has been positioned within a water cooled probe to focus flame product gas emission into an optical fiber where the light is transmitted to a Fourier Transform Infrared Spectrometer (FTIR). The same optical setup was also used to collect light from a black body cavity at a known temperature in order to calibrate the spectral sensitivity of the optical system and FTIR detector. Experiments were conducted in the product gas of a 150 kWth methane flame comparing the optical emission results to a suction pyrometer with type K thermocouple. The optical measurement produced gas temperatures approximately 1 - 4% higher than the suction pyrometer. Broadband background emission was also seen by the optical measurement and was removed assuming grey body radiation. This background emission can be used to determine particle emission temperature and intensity. Additional work will be needed to demonstrate the method under conditions with significant particle emission. Additional work is also needed to demonstrate the work over a smaller path length and shorter time scale.
