Book Radiometric Calibration Theory and Methods

Download or read book Radiometric Calibration Theory and Methods written by Clair Wyatt and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 215 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Radiometric Calibration: Theory and Methods contains an engineering development of the theories and methods of radiometric calibration. This book is organized into 18 chapters. Chapters I to V present an introduction to nomenclature, radiation geometry, and blackbody radiation that serves to simplify the discussion of the calibration theory. The rest of the chapters provide the theory of sensor calibration, reviewing numerous examples in which laboratory equipment and specific techniques are described. Algorithms are also covered for digital computer processing as appropriate for each functional aspect of sensor characterization. This publication is intended for engineers and applied physicists concerned with sensor calibration and the interpretation of sensor data.

Book Spectral Irradiance Measurements in Monterey Bay

Download or read book Spectral Irradiance Measurements in Monterey Bay written by Robert Zafran and published by . This book was released on 1977 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The NPS Spectroirradiometer (spectral irradiance meter) incorporates a rotating spectral wedge filter and was developed to measure the spatial distribution of downwelling underwater solar irradiance. Spectral irradiance data in the 402 to 577 nm regime was observed to depths of 130 m under both clear and foggy sky conditions. Diffuse attenuation coefficients, k, for downwelling light at selected wavelength/depth combinations were calculated from the observed spectral irradiances. The downwelling spectral irradiance values obtained ranged from 436 microwatts/sq. cm/nm at 494 nm to .00150 microwatts/sq cm/nm at 577 nm and are numerically comparable to data from other studies of coastal waters. The calculated values for five selected wavelengths, namely 418, 453, 487, 522, and 557 nm, ranged from .097/m at 418 nm to .274/m at 557 nm and are representative values. The results of the measurements indicate that the NPS Spectroirradiometer provides a practical method of determining irradiance distributions.

Book Uncertainty Analysis of Spectral Irridance Reference Standards Used for NREL Calibrations

Download or read book Uncertainty Analysis of Spectral Irridance Reference Standards Used for NREL Calibrations written by Aron M. Habte and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 15 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Spectral irradiance produced by lamp standards such as the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) FEL-type tungsten halogen lamps are used to calibrate spectroradiometers at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory. Spectroradiometers are often used to characterize spectral irradiance of solar simulators, which in turn are used to characterize photovoltaic device performance, e.g., power output and spectral response. Therefore, quantifying the calibration uncertainty of spectroradiometers is critical to understanding photovoltaic system performance. In this study, we attempted to reproduce the NIST-reported input variables, including the calibration uncertainty in spectral irradiance for a standard NIST lamp, and quantify uncertainty for measurement setup at the Optical Metrology Laboratory at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory.

Book Spectral Irradiance Calibration in the Infrared 15 Absolute Calibration of Standard Stars by Experiments on the Midcourse Space Experiment

Download or read book Spectral Irradiance Calibration in the Infrared 15 Absolute Calibration of Standard Stars by Experiments on the Midcourse Space Experiment written by and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Calibration experiments were conducted with the SPIRIT III infrared instrument on the Midcourse Space Experiment (MSX) against a number of infrared standard stars and five emissive reference spheres that were ejected at various times during the mission. The physical properties of the 2 cm diameter spheres, such as size and emissivity, were precisely measured in the laboratory. The energy balance equation between the total flux absorbed and that emitted by the sphere is solved to obtain the time-dependent temperature of the sphere under the assumption that the sphere radiates as a blackbody with the measured wavelength-dependent emissivity. The estimated uncertainties in the modeling of the sphere are about 1 K in the thermal component and 3% for the geometric contribution. MSX also measured over 150 mean fluxes for eight standard infrared calibration stars during the 10 month mission. The measurements were scaled to the absolute fluxes that Cohen et al. adopt for a CMa (Sirius). The measured spectral energy distributions of the calibration stars relative to Sirius are within the uncertainties that Cohen et al. assign to the absolute fluxes from these stars, with a few exceptions. However, the MSX measurement uncertainties are generally much smaller, and the mission-averaged fluxes reveal statistically significant deviations from the Cohen et al. values. Of the calibration stars, only beta Peg was found to be variable. MSX also measured excess fluxes for a Lyr (Vega) in the 12.1, 14.7, and 21.3 mum spectral bands; the excesses in the latter two bands are consistent with the published thermal model for the dust ring around this star. The absolute calibration of the fluxes of the stellar standards based on the average of the measurements of the spheres over all MSX bands and the five experiments agrees with those predicted to within the 1.4% MSX measurement uncertainties.

Book Spectral Irradiance Calibration in the Infrared XVI Improved Accuracy in the Infrared Spectra of the Secondary and Tertiary Standard Calibration Stars

Download or read book Spectral Irradiance Calibration in the Infrared XVI Improved Accuracy in the Infrared Spectra of the Secondary and Tertiary Standard Calibration Stars written by and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We have increased the spectral resolution and accuracy of the absolute infrared spectral flux for a subset of stellar standards created by Cohen and his collaborators in previous papers in this series. We combined the moderate-resolution spectroscopy obtained on infrared standard stars by the Short Wavelength Spectrometer on the Infrared Space Observatory with high-quality photometry that is tied to our recent absolute calibration from the Midcourse Space Experiment. New spectra were created for 33 stars, 9 of which are Cohen et al. secondary standards and another 20 of which are tertiary standards for which Cohen adopted spectral templates. The effective temperatures and angular diameters for the stars are derived from the absolute spectra and compare favorably with independent measures of these quantities in the literature. The present spectra display systematic differences with those of Cohen and colleagues in that they have 4%-7% lower fluxes in the 1-4 micrometer spectral region. Our spectra remove the A-K star calibration bias recently noted in the calibration of the Spitzer Space Telescope camera.
