Book Specimen Letters Selected and Edited Classic Reprint

Download or read book Specimen Letters Selected and Edited Classic Reprint written by Albert S. Cook and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-02 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Specimen Letters Selected and Edited 'All letters, methinks, should be free and easy as one's discourse - not studied as an oration, nor made up of hard words like a charm.' Thus somewhere wrote Dorothy Osborne to Sir William Temple; and if it is familiar letters that we are speaking of, we shall hardly venture to differ with the fair Dorothy. And even as the frequenting of good society tends to impart an easy turn to one's discourse, so to see how men and women of wit and breeding converse with their intimates on paper ought to preserve us from the worst forms of clownishness, affectation, stiffness, or pedantry. As it is a rare pleasure to receive a well-written letter, so it is a rare accomplishment to write such as shall be at once piquant and natural, cheery but not boisterous, well bred but not unduly ceremonious. In the letters which follow, we have drawn freely upon writers who seem to be at home with their correspondents, and to be pouring out their thoughts, or indulging in their sallies, without other restraint than such as his own nature imposes upon a person of refinement. Some of these are letters of compliment, others of invitation; some are records of travel, others of a home-keeping and unadventurous life. But with all their variety, the letters of this class have a certain unpremeditated air by which they may easily be recognized. But our selection has a somewhat wider range. Some of the letters included strike a deeper note, being elicited by sympathy with sorrow, or serious concern, or indignation. Book Select Letters

Download or read book Select Letters written by Saint Augustine and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-26 with total page 608 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Select Letters: With An English Translation Compared with his Confessions, St. Augustine's Letters have received but slight attention, even from many of his professed biographers, and for each edition of the one there have appeared, at a moderate estimate, several hundred editions, translations or studies of the other. Yet a man's autobiography gives only his own account and interpretation of him self and his deeds his letters, if they are genuine and spontaneous, show him directly, without the distor tion of his own explanations and self-justifications. The present selection, barely a quarter of Augustine's extant correspondence, contains, it is hoped, enough to exhibit the human interest of the man and his environment excluding almost all the lengthier letters, often of the bulk of minor treatises, and those solely or chiefly concerned with questions of doctrine, I have sought to present those which best reveal him in contact with the varied and busy life of his time. Book British Letters Illustrative of Character and Social Life Classic Reprint

Download or read book British Letters Illustrative of Character and Social Life Classic Reprint written by Edward T. Mason and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-03 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from British Letters, Illustrative of Character and Social Life The aim Of this work is to present certain phases of life and Character as described and exemplified by British letter-writers. While the search for materials has not been exhaust tive, it has been reasonably thorough. The number Of writers quoted is not particularly large; and that fact is a matter of indifference; for the end in view has not been to crowd the pages with distinguished names, but to insure the essential fitness Of the selections - a fitness consisting in their special adaptation to the plan Of the series. The peculiar Charm Of letters - perhaps, also, their greatest value - is brought home to us when they are familiar, unstudied expressions Of thought and feeling; when they betray no sense Of a larger audience than the friends for whom alone they were written. The contents Of these volumes do not uniformly maintain so high an excellence, but they exhibit many striking examples Of it. Letters which are known to have been intended for publication. Book Letters on the Diseases of Plants Classic Reprint

Download or read book Letters on the Diseases of Plants Classic Reprint written by N. A. Cobb and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-09-23 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Letters on the Diseases of Plants When the reader has examined the foregoing list, he will very likely wonder at its length, and no doubt ask, IS it possible that there are so many distinct varieties of wheat? To which the ready answer is, Yes, it is true; there are more than three hundred varieties of wheat. I do not mean to imply that every name in the foregoing list represents a distinct variety, for it is beyond question that a number of these so-called varieties, especially in the Purple Straw, Lammas, Fife, and Defiance groups, are identical. These are kept in our plots only out of deference to well-known popular names. One moment more and we will return to the subject of naming wheats. I only wish, first, to explain the nature of the nomenclature plots, which have now become such an established institution. Rows of wheat, each row containing only a single sort, are sown side by Side in the order given in the above list. Each row is plainly labelled, and all the wheats of a kind (that is, closely related to each other) are gathered together into a plot, as shown in the illustration Fig. 2, p. 7, and the plot is labelled by means of a large Sign bearing the name of the group or family. These wheats are the result of six years of careful study and selection. They have been chosen from over samples obtained from all parts of the world - Australia, New Zealand, United States, Great Britain, Russia, India, Japan, China, South Africa, Italy, Spain, France, Germany, Hungary, Turkey, Algiers, Mexico, Chili, and Canada. The whole world has been drawn upon for these samples. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Greyson Letters

Download or read book The Greyson Letters written by Henry Rogers and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-04 with total page 524 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Greyson Letters: Selections From the Correspondence of Greyson, Esq. The title of this volume might lead the reader to conclude that Mr. Rogers had performed only a subordinate part in its production. A further examination of the work, however, would quickly undeceive him. The title is, in fact, only a pleasant fiction; "Mr. Greyson" and Mr. Rogers are one and the same person. Every letter in the volume is radiant with the genius of the author of "The Eclipse of Faith." Whether these letters are part of an actual correspondence - whether they were written under the circumstances indicated and addressed to the persons to whom they purport to be addressed - may give rise to some doubt. A careful consideration of the internal evidence will perhaps convince the reader that this feature of the work, too, is only a fiction - that "Mr. West," and "Dr. Ellis," and the rest, are no more real than "Mr. Greyson." Book Ciceronis Epistolarum Delectus

Download or read book Ciceronis Epistolarum Delectus written by E. St. John Parry and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-09-27 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ciceronis Epistolarum Delectus: A Selection From Cicero's Letters Illustrating the Contemporary History of Rome, With Notes and Introductions The following selection of Cicero's Letters will be found to differ from others that have preceded it in this respect - that all the letters selected have some bearing on the public events of Cicero's life. I have accordingly omitted many interesting letters to be found in most collections, either as repeating matter already given, or as containing mere personal and domestic history. It has been my object to place before the reader, as far as can be gathered from the unfortunately incomplete collection of Cicero's correspondence, a connected series of letters bearing on the great political crisis of the years A.U.C. 688-710. The breaks that occur in the correspondence are filled by introductions to the several letters, and more especially to the great divisions into which they naturally fall. I have also endeavoured to smooth the difficulties which attend the chronology of the later periods of this correspondence by Tables of Dates prefixed to Letters XLVII. and LXXXVI. These tables are not so complete as I should wish; but the defect will be readily forgiven by those who have attempted a similar task. I shall welcome any corrections or additions of scholars which may make my work more complete in this and in other respects. Throughout it is assumed that the student of these letters has some good history to refer to; for without a competent knowledge of the history of the later republic, the reader will find the letters of Cicero unintelligible. Download or read book Selected Letters written by Francesco Petrarca and published by I Tatti Renaissance Library. This book was released on 2017 with total page 800 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We naturally think of Petrarca first as a poet. But he was much more than that. The first of the great scholar-poets of the Renaissance, Petrarca was instrumental in establishing as a cultural goal the rediscovery and collection of manuscripts of the ancient Latin authors; thanks to Petrarca the humanist scholars who followed him became the main conduit for the transmission and revitalization of classical learning, a necessary condition of the wider European Renaissance. Even more significant was Petrarca's role in shaping the literary movement that became known as humanism, a movement that for centuries promoted the study and cultivation of Latin literature. A charismatic figure with a gift for friendship, his life - revealed above all in his letters - became a model for how to live a literary life, how to reconcile the study of pagan literature with sincere Christian belief, and how the study of ancient languages and literatures could serve both true religion and the public world of princes and republics, as well as promote moral excellence in mankind as a whole. He gave the humanities a set of ideals that they fed upon for centuries. He taught how the civic virtues and philosophical wisdom of the pagans could be combined with Christian teachings to produce a a richer civilization. He taught that the humanistic study of antiquity could transform lives and bring back virtue as a personal and public ideal. He more than anyone planted the great tree of Christian classicism which flourished in the West down to modern times.--

Download or read book Life Letters and Works of Louis Agassiz Vol 2 Classic Reprint written by Jules Marcou and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-10-30 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Life, Letters, and Works of Louis Agassiz, Vol. 2 Agassiz was in complete ignorance of what had become of Burkhardt Since he left the glacier of the Aar and Neuchatel in 1843. But Burkhardt, learning through the newspapers that Agassiz was delivering a course of lectures, gladly called on him and told his pathetic history, his attitude and appearance amply proving that life in the streets of New York under such conditions was a difficult one to endure. Agassiz, always open-handed and generous, received his old artist with great kindness, and offered him a home, on the single condition that he Should draw his zoological specimens. The unfortunate artist was only too ready to accept any offer, or, more correctly, any arrangement, which prom ised a living; and with that lack of specific agreement which always characterized Agassiz's connection with his assistants, he resumed his position as draughtsman, and was brought by Agassiz to East Boston, on his return from New York, at the end of November, 1847. This hap-hazard association lasted until the death of Burkhardt, and is the only one, of all those formed in the same way, during the life of Agassiz, which remained undisturbed.
