Book excerpt: This supplement presents modifications of the channels, jetties and weir system that were previously submitted for approval. The major revisions occurred as a result of model test data developed by WES subsequent to submission of the GDM. Other changes were made as a result of a conference held at SAD on 20 August 1976 concerning design of weir jetty structures. This supplement covers changes in jetty and channel configuration resulting from model testing of Plans 7A, 7B, Plans 1B through 1H and from innovative changes in weir system design. It also presents a summary of the WES model results for all plans tested. A comprehensive report of the model testing program for the Murrells Inlet Navigation Project will be submitted as a separate appendix (to the General Design Memorandum) at a latter date. A revised project cost estimate considering the various changes is presented. A physical model of Murrells Inlet and estuary was constructed at WES to evaluate the effects of currents and wave action on different arrangements of the jetty system under simulated prototype conditions. This fixed bed model was constructed to 1:200 horizontal and 1:60 vertical scales.

Book excerpt: This volume is the result of an initiative of the Commission on the Coastal Environment of the International Geographical Union. The initial concept from which the plan has proceeded was presented at the 24th International Geographical Congress in Japan in 1980. AUTHORSHIP AND COVERAGE All of the articles in this volume have been written by specialists familiar with the coastal segment discussed. Nearly all have been prepared by citizens of the country (and, for that matter, even each subregion) considered. In the case of exceptions (e.g. Suriname), the authors have conducted fieldwork on the coast of the country they treat. In order to preserve the "on-the-spot" integrity of the volume, it was decided not to fill in the blanks along the world's coastline with library researched chapters. Thus, coverage is variable. Nearly every coastal country in Europe is represented whereas for Africa and South America there are major gaps. In addition, there are 2 instances of overlap. In the case of England (with a shoreline of nearly 3,000 km) a complementary chapter on Lincolnshire (with a shoreline of only 155 km) is included. The other case is the general article on the Baltic Coast of the USSR which is supported by chapters on Estonia and Lithuania.

Book excerpt: The purpose of the Murrell's Inlet Navigation Project is to provide a safe permanent channel for vessels from the open ocean to the village of Murrell's Inlet. This is felt to be necessary because of the large amount of sand migration in the vicinity of the Inlet that often leads to an almost total closing of the Inlet. The project will be carried out by deepening the inner channel that lies in the center of Main Creek, dredging a small auxiliary channel, and dredging an entrance channel connecting the inner channel to the sea, out to the 10' contour mean low water. The objective of the literature search was to determine if there was a reasonable chance that terrestrial or underwater sites of historic or archeological interest might be located in the designated dredging or spoils dumping areas as detailed in the Corps of Engineer's Environmental Impact Preliminary Statement in order to provide sufficient information to plan the nature and extent of field investigation if it is warranted.
