Book Modern Methods in High School Teaching

Download or read book Modern Methods in High School Teaching written by Harl Roy Douglass and published by . This book was released on 1926 with total page 574 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume addresses teachers and principals, presenting a comprehensive treatment of the methods of teaching in high schools. The author assumes a familiarity on the part of his readers with the nature of the learning process, adolescence, and the psychological foundations of interests and motives as they relate to whole-hearted pupil activity. The fundamentals of both theory and practice are set forth, and an attempt has been made to outline and describe the newer types of procedure, which are being employed in different subjects in the best secondary schools. Throughout the volume the attempt has been made clearly to represent practices rather than to advocate their adoption. The reader is permitted to draw his own conclusions. The book will appeal to the type of reader who wants to be intelligent about what is going on in high-school teaching.

Book Education

Book excerpt: This research addresses lack of student teaching preparation. There is strong evidence that beginning teachers are not trained to adequately teach students due to their lack of preparation/content knowledge. The purpose of this study is to examine the experience of beginning teachers to try to understand why student teachers are not prepared for the 21st century class. It also addresses how to improve the student teaching experience at all levels of teacher preparation in the elementary, middle, and high school settings. The literature revealed key findings which included the following: teacher preparation institutions need to transform their programs to reflect the realities of 21st century schools, pre-service teachers should be exposed to the intense work of the typical classroom teacher over a much longer period of time, and colleges need to ensure that cooperating teachers are models of best practice. This study takes the qualitative approach, using interview protocol. Participants included an elementary school teacher in Northern California, and one student teacher enrolled in an undergraduate program in teacher preparation at a private university in the greater San Francisco Bay Area. Also a superintendent of a local school district in Dayton, Ohio participated in the study. A university professor involved in teacher education was also interviewed for this study. Results indicated that more time in the classroom would result in an improved level of a teacher's confidence. Coursework at the university level needs to parallel the same content learning in the K-12 school. Finally, an individual's personality is a strong factor in success in teaching. A teacher with superior content knowledge goes unnoticed without an engaging personality. The following are appended: (1) Questions for Student Teachers; and (2) Questions for the University Professor, School Superintendent and Physical Education Teacher.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book argues for a complete reassessment of the ways schools are conceived, organized, operated and managed. Authors Trani and Irvine challenge traditional assumptions about grade levels, teachers, students and administrators in pursuit of higher student achievement and academic excellence. Building on the methods that turned an average school district into one widely recognized as one of the best in the nation, this book argues for fundamental, logical changes to the way Americans operate their public schools. Fallacies in Education is purposefully written to support community-based changes to schools that encourage superior achievement and educational results. This book provides a pathway for concerned parents, administrators, teachers and citizens to improve their schools with their current resources. The techniques used in Corbett to produce an academic renaissance can be used everywhere and this book provides a starting point for schools to strive for academic achievement and excellence in education. The book demonstrates how every school can better serve their students and deliver a better education without increasing costs or incurring new ones.

Book Empowered Educators in China

Download or read book Empowered Educators in China written by Mistilina Sato and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2017-04-03 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: BEST PRACTICES FROM CHINA'S HIGH-PERFORMING SCHOOL SYSTEM Empowered Educators in China is one volume in a series that explores how high-performing educational systems from around the world achieve strong results. The anchor book, Empowered Educators: How High-Performing Systems Shape Teaching Quality Around the World, is written by Linda Darling-Hammond and colleagues, with contributions from the author of this volume. Empowered Educators in China describes the nation's policy reforms that built the modern Chinese educational system and the educational practices that are considered typical in China. The book spotlights Shanghai's system which is distinctive and superior. Shanghai offers a clear illustration of an educational system that continually invests in educating a diverse student population and, by measures of international comparison tests, is achieving outstanding results. Many factors contribute to the Shanghai system's ongoing success, including the students' motivation toward strong performance, the parental support for education that is culturally ingrained throughout the country, the focus that teachers place on high expectations for students, and the individual tutoring they provide. The author argues that these factors are only a partial explanation of Shanghai's success and then closely describes educational policies that support teachers' preparation, hiring, ongoing development, and opportunities for awards and leadership. These policies are based on the assumption that teachers are key to the nation's future and must be appropriately supported in order to contribute to student performance and achievement, an assumption that is also explicitly stated within Chinese law. This volume offers specific descriptions of how these national policies are translated, adapted, and enacted in Shanghai.
