Book excerpt: SYNOPSIS S P E C I F I C I N T E N T To everyone in the small enclave of Kensington, Long Island, New York, Dr. Feelgood and his wife Sophia seemed every bit the all-American happy family. He was a good looking medical student who went on to become chief of surgery at a prestigious hospital. She was his college sweetheart and the mother of his two children. With the death of Sophia on the evening of June 18th 1977, this picture perfect family became the center of one of the most shocking and sensational murder cases of the decade. At first, the community rallied around the respected surgeon, but slowly a different story began to emerge of a sleazy secret life, of a manipulative lover, and an obsessive adulterer. His good name and credibility sank further with the revelation of the existence of a mistress tucked away in Copenhagen, Denmark with two small children he had fathered. The authorities, particularly an aggressive district attorney with his eyes on the Governors chair began to tighten a noose around his neck readying an indictment for murder. Add to this is a pending malpractice law suit and a slippery slope financial crisis and we have the conditions necessary to create a fugitive from justice.

Book Treatise on International Criminal Law

Download or read book Treatise on International Criminal Law written by Kai Ambos and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2022 with total page 449 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: International criminal law and justice is a flourishing field which has led, in recent years, to new international criminal tribunals and new mechanisms for investigation and holding criminals to account. These developments have, in turn, led to an increasing volume and greater consolidation of case law, and even more scholarly attention. The second edition of this volume of Kai Ambos' seminal treatise has been revised and rewritten in parts to provide coverage of recent developments in the 'Special Part' of international criminal law: namely, the specific crimes and sentencing. Amongst other updates, there are significant extensions of the discussion on sexual and gender-based crimes; the introduction of environmental crimes into international criminal law; further elaboration on the nexus requirement in war crimes and asymmetrical conflicts (e.g., ISIS); and reference to the newly introduced war crimes of the ICC Statute and of the peculiarities of cyber-attacks and other emerging activities. The volume complements Volume I of the treatise on issues relevant to the foundations, general part of international criminal law, and general principles of international criminal justice. Taken together with the other new editions of the three-volume series, this second edition provides an exhaustive guide to every aspect of international criminal law, from fundamental principles to procedures and implementation. Kai Ambos' Treatise remains an indispensable reference work for academics and practitioners of international criminal law.

Book Incitement on Trial

    Book Details:
  • Author : Richard Ashby Wilson
  • Publisher : Cambridge University Press
  • Release : 2017-08-18
  • ISBN : 1108298672
  • Pages : 377 pages

Download or read book Incitement on Trial written by Richard Ashby Wilson and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2017-08-18 with total page 377 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: International and national armed conflicts are usually preceded by a media campaign in which public figures foment ethnic, national, racial or religious hatred, inciting listeners to acts of violence. Incitement on Trial evaluates the efforts of international criminal tribunals to hold such inciters criminally responsible. This is an unsettled area of international criminal law, and prosecutors have often struggled to demonstrate a causal connection between speech acts and subsequent crimes. This book identifies 'revenge speech' as the type of rhetoric with the greatest effects on empathy and tolerance for violence. Wilson argues that inciting speech should be handled under the preventative doctrine of inchoate crimes, but that once international crimes have been committed, then ordering and complicity are the most appropriate forms of criminal liability. Based in extensive original research, this book proposes an evidence-based risk assessment model for monitoring political speech.
