Book Scientific Simulations with Special Purpose Computers

Download or read book Scientific Simulations with Special Purpose Computers written by Junichiro Makino and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 1998-03-06 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scientific Simulations with Special-Purpose Computers. The GRAPE Systems J. Makino University of Tokyo, Japan and M. Taiji Institute for Statistical Mathematics, Tokyo, Japan Physics is full of complex many-body problems, i.e. problems where there are a large number of bodies interacting. This is particularly true in astrophysics, where stars or galaxies can be thought of as individual particles, but also in plasma physics, hydrodynamics and molecular dynamics. Special purpose computers have been developed to handle these highly complex problems. Scientific Simulations with Special-Purpose Computers gives an overview of these systems, and then focuses on an extremely high profile and successful project-the GRAPE computer at the University of Tokyo-and discusses its development, performance and applications across a range of problems. The future development and applications of special purpose computers are also discussed. Written by two of the leading developers of the GRAPE system, this unique volume will be of great interest to readers across a wide range of fields, including, astrophysicists, astronomers, plasma physicists, researchers in molecular dynamics and computer scientists.

The data base applications of the FETCH-AND-ADD instruction, distributed parallel architecture for speech understanding, and two parallel formulations of particle-in-cell models are likewise covered in this text. This publication is suitable for students, researchers and professionals concerned with algorithmically specialized computers.

Book Special Purpose Computers

Download or read book Special Purpose Computers written by Berni J. Alder and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2014-05-10 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Special Purpose Computers describes special-purpose computers and compares them to general-purpose computers in terms of speed and cost. Examples of computers that were designed for the efficient solution of long established algorithms are given, including Navier-Stokes hydrodynamic solvers, classical molecular dynamic machines, and Ising model computers. Comprised of seven chapters, this volume begins by documenting the progress of the CalTech Concurrent Computation Program and its evolution from computational high-energy physics to a supercomputer initiative, with emphasis on the lessons learned including computer architecture issues and the trade-offs between in-house and commercial development. The reader is then introduced to the QCD Machine, a special-purpose parallel supercomputer that was designed and built to solve the lattice quantum chromodynamics problem. Subsequent chapters focus on the Geometry-Defining Processors and their application to the solution of partial differential equations; the Navier-Stokes computer; parallel processing using the Loosely Coupled Array of Processors (LCAP) system; and the Delft Ising system processor. The design and implementation of the Delft molecular-dynamics processor are also described. This book will be of interest to computer engineers and designers.

Book Principles of Synthesis and Performance of Special purpose Computing Systems

Download or read book Principles of Synthesis and Performance of Special purpose Computing Systems written by V. D. Panasenko and published by . This book was released on 1969 with total page 18 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: General problems involved in the synthesis and performance of special-purpose multicomputer systems are discussed. Three trends in the organization of joint operation of computers are distinguished: (1) Joint operation of a few existing various general-purpose computers; (2) Joint operation of a few identical general-purpose computers; (3) A special-purpose computing system (SPCS) which may consist of different or identical computers. Parallel and sometimes series-parallel algorithms are most suitable for SPCS; their efficiency can be evaluated by the minimum algorithm length and the total number of required operations. These indices of performance of SPCA are considered: (a) productivity, i.e., the net machine time spent in solving a problem; (b) productivity ratio, i.e., the ratio of the time required to solve a problem by one computer to the time required to solve the same problem by SPCS consisting of identical computers; (c) structural suitability of algorithm to SPCS; (d) utilization factor of SPCS; (e) complexity and economy of SPCS.

Book Digital Computers in Action

Download or read book Digital Computers in Action written by A. D. Booth and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2014-05-18 with total page 155 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Digital Computers in Action is an introduction to the basics of digital computers as well as their programming and various applications in fields such as mathematics, science, engineering, economics, medicine, and law. Other topics include engineering automation, process control, special purpose games-playing devices, machine translation and mechanized linguistics, and information retrieval. This book consists of 14 chapters and begins by discussing the history of computers, from the idea of performing complex arithmetical calculations to the emergence of a modern view of the structure of a general purpose computing machine. Some of the most important applications of computers are also considered. This text introduces the structure and capabilities of the modern electronic digital computer; what operations can be performed by a typical machine and how these operations make the process of automatic calculation a useful one; and the uses of digital computers in mathematics, science, engineering, economics, medicine, and law. This book also examines the applications of computers to the automation of production engineering, process control in refinery transportation and the factory, and machine translation and mechanized linguistics. The final chapter deals with the use of computers in information storage and retrieval. This reference material is intended for students who wish to know how computers can be of assistance in their own disciplines.

Book History of Computer Programs

Download or read book History of Computer Programs written by Andreas Sofroniou and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2017-10-25 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although the development of the computer has been largely played out during the 20th century, there is a long history of automatic calculation. Among the earliest electronic computers were the Colossus series of special-purpose computers, developed secretly in the UK from 1943. A new era for reliable software started by using small layers of software above the hardware and by developing the microcode it enabled the computer to execute a larger set of instructions, which allow reading from and writing to files, input/output devices. This is provided by the compiler or interpreter, which permits a programmer to write programs in a problem-orientated computer language. Such a development of software engineering made the design and implementation a less error-prone process. The major challenges for the future of computing and the programs include the development of even higher level computer languages for the in-depth Internaut surfacing, and artificial intelligence thus being closer to human behaviour.
