Book How to Learn French in Canada

Download or read book How to Learn French in Canada written by Victor E Graham and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 1965-12-15 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is well known that even after several years' exposure to high-school French, most English Canadians remain unable to speak the language. It is equally well known that many French Canadians are bilingual. One of the more obvious explanations for this relative deficiency on the part of the English Canadian is his lack of opportunities to use the French language in day-to-day situations, and, conversely, the French Canadian's need to know the second language, too often perhaps for economic reasons. Professor Graham's book gives useful and practical suggestions on how to go about becoming fluent in French. It offers not a course of instruction, but a listing of practical ways of applying oneself to a study of the language. There is specific, up-to-date information and advice regarding services provided by the governments of Quebec and France, courses offered in various Canadian communities, clubs and societies, correspondence courses, universities and summer schools, and language laboratories. A feature which will be especially helpful for those in remote areas is the listing of publications (books, newspapers, and periodicals), music and songs, records, films, and radio and television programmes which provide instruction in French. The reader will quickly see that the available means are much more varied than he realizes, and it is in providing this concise, convenient enumeration of them that Professor Graham performs a great service. Any adult who is reasonably proficient in French, but wishes to improve, will find this a practical and useful guide to ways of making a personal contribution to bilingualism in Canada. This study has been prepared under the sponsorship of the Canadian Association for Adult Education.

T. Anderson. Liv Fleming’s father went missing more than two years ago, not long after he claimed to have been abducted by aliens. Liv has long accepted that he’s dead, though that doesn’t mean she has given up their traditions. Every Sunday, she and her lifelong friend Doug Monk trudge through the woods to check the traps Lee left behind, traps he set to catch the aliens he so desperately believed were after him. But Liv is done with childhood fantasies. Done pretending she believes her father’s absurd theories. Done going through the motions for Doug’s sake. However, on the very day she chooses to destroy the traps, she discovers in one of them a creature so inhuman it can only be one thing. In that moment, she’s faced with a painful realization: her dad was telling the truth. And no one believed him. Now, she and Doug have a choice to make. They can turn the alien over to the authorities...or they can take matters into their own hands. On the heels of the worldwide success of The Shape of Water, Daniel Kraus returns with a horrifying and heartbreaking thriller about the lengths people go to find justice and the painful reality of grief. “Bent Heavens is the darkest, angriest alien horror story that I've ever encountered. Book Made in Quebec

  • Author : Julian Armstrong
  • Publisher : Harper Collins
  • Release : 2014-10-14
  • ISBN : 1443425338
  • Pages : 488 pages

Download or read book Made in Quebec written by Julian Armstrong and published by Harper Collins. This book was released on 2014-10-14 with total page 488 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Canada’s culinary treasure revealed in recipes, stories and photographs Canada has a culinary treasure in Quebec, one that is not perhaps as celebrated as it could be, at least outside of that distinct and gloriously food-obsessed region. Julian Armstrong, longtime food writer for The Montreal Gazette, has spent her career eating, cooking, thinking and writing about Quebecois food. Quebec, A Cookbook is the result of those years of delicious effort. Quebec has a cuisine firmly based on French foundations, but blended and enriched over the years by the cooking styles of a variety of immigrant groups, initially British and American, more recently Italian, Greek, Middle Eastern and Asian. More than in any other province or region in Canada, people in Quebec are passionate and knowledgeable about their food. The restaurant scene is robust, not just in Montreal and Quebec City—you can go to just about any small town in La belle province and have a splendid meal. Farmers, purveyors, chefs, casual and dedicated home cooks all are poised in every season to produce or procure the perfect, seasonal ingredient; not for them the out-of-season asparagus from Chile. Quebec is where you can truly experience what food tasted like before the industrial food complex. Here unpasteurized milk and cheese is commonplace; indeed there is a herd of cattle descended from cows brought from France by Samuel de Champlain producing dairy just for this purpose. Imagine that in Ontario! Of course, Quebec is big news in the global foodie world these days, with Martin Picard (Au Pied de Cochon), Dave Macmillan and Fred Morin (The Art of Living According to Joe Beef), and even our own Chuck Hughes showing off the joys of dining in this great province. But there is much more still to discover about Quebec, from restaurateurs certainly, but also from farmers, foragers, artisanal cheese and bread makers, home cooks, and so many more. These people, their stories and recipes, will make up the bulk of Quebec: a Cookbook. It is high time for a comprehensive celebration of Quebecois cuisine.

  • Pages : 466 pages

Download or read book Rotters written by Daniel Kraus and published by Ember. This book was released on 2012-04-10 with total page 466 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Grave-robbing. What kind of monster would do such a thing? It's true that Leonardo da Vinci did it, Shakespeare wrote about it, and the resurrection men of nineteenth-century Scotland practically made it an art. But none of this matters to Joey Crouch, a sixteen-year-old straight-A student living in Chicago with his single mom. For the most part, Joey's life is about playing the trumpet and avoiding the daily humiliations of high school. Everything changes when Joey's mother dies in a tragic accident and he is sent to rural Iowa to live with the father he has never known, a strange, solitary man with unimaginable secrets. At first, Joey's father wants nothing to do with him, but once father and son come to terms with each other, Joey's life takes a turn both macabre and exhilarating. Daniel Kraus's masterful plotting and unforgettable characters make Rotters a moving, terrifying, and unconventional epic about fathers and sons, complex family ties, taboos, and the ever-present specter of mortality.
