Book Speak of Me As I Am

Download or read book Speak of Me As I Am written by Sonia Belasco and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2017-04-04 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A moving story of grief, honesty, and the healing power of art — the ties that bind us together, even when those we love are gone. Melanie and Damon are both living in the shadow of loss. For Melanie, it's the loss of her larger-than-life artist mother, taken by cancer well before her time. For Damon, it’s the loss of his best friend, Carlos, who took his own life. As they struggle to fill the empty spaces their loved ones left behind, fate conspires to bring them together. Damon takes pictures with Carlos’s camera to try to understand his choices, and Melanie begins painting as a way of feeling closer to her mother. But when the two join their school’s production of Othello, the play they both hoped would be a distraction becomes a test of who they truly are, both together and on their own. And more than anything else, they discover that it just might be possible to live their lives without completely letting go of their sadness. Praise for Speak of Me As I Am: "Debut author Belasco adeptly captures the tribulations of high school life while also celebrating art's ability to help clarify and contextualize its joys and sorrows. . . . The novel's most intriguing character . . . is grief itself, which the author illuminates, examines, and dissects with a surgeon's precision and the gentle touch of an artist. A stirring account of the trials of adolescence." —Kirkus Reviews "This book will undoubtedly be compared to Rainbow Rowell’s Eleanor & Park. . . . Teens seeking a quieter but no less moving story will find this book a perfect read." —Booklist "Never maudlin, always authentic, the portrayal of their struggles to deal with grief and with love will resonate with many teens." —VOYA "A good purchase for realistic fiction collections and for readers looking for books about survivor’s guilt and healing." —School Library Journal "Belasco’s novel sends a powerful message about the complicated nature of grief. . . . This powerful, emotional work should be earmarked to be a favorite with teen readers." —BookPage

Book Speak to Me The Legacy of Pink Floyd s The Dark Side of the Moon

Download or read book Speak to Me The Legacy of Pink Floyd s The Dark Side of the Moon written by Russell Reising and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-10-03 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The endurance of Pink Floyd's The Dark Side of the Moon on the Billboard Top 100 Chart is legendary, and its continuing sales and ongoing radio airplay ensure its inclusion on almost every conceivable list of rock's greatest albums. This collection of essays provides indispensable studies of the monumental 1973 album from a variety of musical, cultural, literary and social perspectives. The development and change of the songs is considered closely, from the earliest recordings through to the live, filmed performance at London's Earls Court in 1994. The band became almost synonymous with audio-visual innovations, and the performances of the album at live shows were spectacular moments of mass-culture although Roger Waters himself spoke out against such mass spectacles. The band's stage performances of the album serve to illustrate the multifaceted and complicated relationship between modern culture and technology. The album is therefore placed within the context of developments in late 1960s/early 1970s popular music, with particular focus on the use of a variety of segues between tracks which give the album a multidimensional unity that is lacking in Pink Floyd's later concept albums. Beginning with 'Breathe' and culminating in 'Eclipse', a tonal and motivic coherence unifies the structure of this modern song cycle. The album is also considered in the light of modern day 'tribute' bands, with a discussion of the social groups who have the strongest response to the music being elaborated alongside the status of mediated representations and their relation to the 'real' Pink Floyd.

My boys did not have any rights or anyone to speak for them. As a mother you cannot speak for your children in court. The judges and lawyers assume every case is the same. There are a lot of parents out there who just want to keep the other parent away from the children just because they don’t want them in their lives anymore. Well because of that my boys suffered a lot. When you enter into the court system with your children they become just a number. Then it becomes a money game with the lawyers, no one really cares about the best interest of the children. Throughout my story you will see how everyone turned their head the other way, no one wanted to help my boys. All the signs were there that there was something terribly wrong, but no one wanted to get involved. Everyone was afraid to speak up for the boys. I know that there are a lot of parents out there that are going through custody battles, the courts are backed up with them. There is a message in this book that I need to get out.

Book Hatshepsut Speak to Me

    Book Details:
  • Author : Ruth Whitman
  • Publisher : Wayne State University Press
  • Release : 1992
  • ISBN : 9780814323809
  • Pages : 100 pages

Download or read book Hatshepsut Speak to Me written by Ruth Whitman and published by Wayne State University Press. This book was released on 1992 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hatshepsut, Speak to Me, Ruth Whitman's eighth volume of poetry, is her most innovative and adventurous book. It is in the form of a conversation with Queen Hatshepsut, the only woman pharaoh in ancient Egypt, whose reign of more than twenty years was one of the most peaceful and artistically splendid eras in Egyptian history. As poet and pharaoh talk to each other, it becomes apparent that the two lives intersect remarkably across the centuries. Both must face problems of sexual identity, love, work, mothering, conflict, and loss. An admirer of Hatshepsut for the past forty years, Whitman has spent the last five researching the pharaoh's life and surrounding culture, visiting Egypt twice in order to study the landscape along the Nile to contemplate Hatshepsut's monuments, particularly her spectacular three-tiered temple at Deir el Bahri in the Valley of the Kings. The result is a vibrant glimpse into two parallel lives, illustrating a unique relationship between two women separated by twenty-five centuries, and illuminating many of the issues relevant to every contemporary woman's experience. Whitman goes beyond just telling Hatshepsut's story. She connects herself with the life of her subject, speaks to her, and learns from her. Hatshepsut, Speak to Me represents a culmination of Ruth Whitman's series of groundbreaking narrative poems written in the voices of other extraordinary women-Lizzie Borden, Tamsen Donner, Hanna Senesh, Anna Pavlova, and Isadora Duncan.
