Book excerpt: While mounting observational evidence suggests the coevolution of galaxies and their embedded massive black holes (MBHs), a comprehensive astrophysical understanding which incorporates both galaxies and MBHs has been missing. To tackle the nonlinear processes of galaxy formation, we develop a state-of-the-art numerical framework which self-consistently models the interplay between galactic components: dark matter, gas, stars, and MBHs. Utilizing this physically motivated tool, we present an investigation of a massive star-forming galaxy hosting a slowly growing MBH in a cosmological LCDM simulation. The MBH feedback heats the surrounding gas and locally suppresses star formation in the galactic inner core. In simulations of merging galaxies, the high-resolution adaptive mesh allows us to observe widespread starbursts via shock-induced star formation, and the interplay between the galaxies and their embedding medium. Fast growing MBHs in merging galaxies drive more frequent and powerful jets creating sizable bubbles at the galactic centers. We conclude that the interaction between the interstellar gas, stars and MBHs is critical in understanding the star formation history, black hole accretion history, and cosmological evolution of galaxies. Expanding upon our extensive experience in galactic simulations, we are well poised to apply this tool to other challenging, yet highly rewarding tasks in contemporary astrophysics, such as high-redshift quasar formation.

Book excerpt: In the past decade, molecular gas observations have begun probing the high redshift universe in a systematic way using increasingly powerful millimeter instruments. This work has significantly advanced our understanding of the history of gas consumption by star formation in galaxies, revealing the high redshift universe to be similar in many ways to what we know locally. Specifically, molecular gas studies suggest that at both high and low redshift, the molecular gas reservoir in galaxies is insufficient to support on-going star formation. This is the molecular gas depletion problem, and motivates the research presented in this dissertation. I first investigate the molecular gas depletion problem on cosmic scales. Using the observed cosmic densities of the star formation rate, atomic gas and molecular gas, combined with measurements of the molecular gas depletion time in local galaxies, I derive the history of gas consumption by star formation from z = 0 to z ~ 4. I show that models in which the molecular gas is not replenished, or is only replenished by atomic gas, are not consistent with observational constraints. I find that star formation on cosmic timescales must be fueled by intergalactic ionized gas at an average rate that roughly traces the star formation rate density of the universe. Further, I predict the volume averaged density of molecular gas to increase by a factor of 1.5 - 10 to z ~ 1.5 over the currently measured value, which implies that galaxies at high redshift must, on average, be more molecular gas-rich than they are at the present epoch, consistent with observations. Next I focus on the observational constraints on the molecular gas content of galaxies from z ~ 1 - 2 to today. Recent observations suggest z ~ 1 - 2 galaxies harbor molecular gas reservoirs an order of magnitude larger than their local counterparts, implying significant evolution of the molecular gas content of galaxies over the past 8 billion years. However, this period of time has been relatively un-observed in molecular gas. To fill in this observational gap, I carry out the Evolution of molecular Gas in Normal Galaxies (EGNoG) survey, a study of molecular gas in 31 star-forming galaxies from z = 0.05 to z = 0.5. With observations of the CO(1-0) and CO(3-2) rotational lines using the Combined Array for Research in Millimeter-wave Astronomy (CARMA), the EGNoG survey accomplishes two goals: tracing the evolution of the molecular gas content of galaxies at intermediate redshifts and constraining the excitation of the molecular gas in these galaxies. With 24 detections out of 31 observed galaxies, I calculate an average molecular gas fraction of 7 - 20% at z ~ 0.05 - 0.5, which is in line with observations at high and low redshift and agrees well with the evolution predicted by a simple empirical prescription for gas consumption by star formation in galaxies from z ~ 1 - 2 to today. The EGNoG observations of four galaxies at z = 0.3 (the gas excitation subsample) yield robust detections of both lines in three galaxies (and an upper limit on the fourth). I find an average line ratio, r31 = L'(CO(3-2)) / L'(CO(1-0)), of 0.46 ± 0.07 (with systematic errors less than 40%), which implies sub-thermal excitation of the CO(3-2) line. As the EGNoG galaxies are representative of the main sequence of star-forming galaxies, I extend this result to include main sequence galaxies at high redshift. To support the observations carried out at CARMA as part of the EGNoG survey, I give two appendices. The first details the data reduction and flux measurement for the EGNoG survey, including a description of the use of polarized calibrators to calibrate data from single, linearly polarized feeds. In the second appendix, I describe the absolute flux calibration of CARMA data and the automated monitoring system I helped put in place in order to maintain a historical record of the flux of common calibrators. Finally, I return to the gas depletion problem in the local universe. I carry out a pilot study of atomic (HI) gas in groups of galaxies in order to investigate the role of tidal interactions in transporting atomic gas from the outskirts of galaxy disks to the central regions so that it may replenish the molecular gas and fuel ongoing star formation. I image three groups of galaxies in the 21 cm line of HI with the Allen Telescope Array (ATA), detecting many galaxies not previously observed in HI as well as four previously undetected clouds of HI between galaxies that account for up to 3% of the HI reservoir of the groups. To investigate the potential role of this gas in the ongoing star formation in the group, I compare the mass of the detected HI gas in and between galaxies in the group to the estimated star formation rates of the group members.

Book excerpt: We study the spatially resolved properties of star-forming galaxies at redshift z 2 - 3 on scales 1 kpc using a combination of morphological and kinematic analyses in an effort to characterize the major mechanisms of galaxy formation in the young universe. Using a sample of 216 galaxies which have been spectroscopically confirmed to lie between redshifts z = 1.8 - 3.4 in the GOODS-N field we demonstrate that rest-UV morphology (as seen by the Hubble Space Telescope) is statistically uncorrelated with physical properties such as star formation rate and is therefore unable to support the hypothesis that the prevalence of irregular morphologies indicates a high major merger fraction. Further, we present a sample of 13 galaxies observed with the OSIRIS integral field spectrograph and the Keck laser-guide star adaptive optics system which demonstrate the prevalence of high velocity dispersions 80 km/s and generally little in the way of spatially resolved velocity gradients, inconsistent with favored rotating disk models. We discuss the implications of these results for galaxy formation models, including gas accretion via cold flows and gravitational instability of early gas-rich galactic disks. There is some evidence for a trend towards stronger rotational signatures in galaxies with more massive stellar populations.

High-resolution observations of other galaxies enabled a study of extragalactic star formation in more detailed while large scale surveys of the Milky Way enabled a more comprehensive study of Galactic star formation. The main goal of this thesis is to use multi-wavelength, large-scale observations of the Milky Way to connect Galactic to extragalactic star formation and to study star formation regulation in molecular clouds. We tested the use of extragalactic star formation rate tracers on nearby molecular clouds and found that the total infrared and 24 [mu]m luminosity underestimate star formation rates of nearby molecular clouds by a large factor, indicating a problem of using extragalactic tracers of star formation on small regions and regions with low mass or low star formation rates. We studied the relation between star formation and molecular gas distribution in a 11 square degree of the Galactic Plane on various spatial scales starting from a clump scale of around few parsecs to a scale of ≈ 200 parsec. The result shows a good correlation between molecular gas and star formation on a scale above ≈ 5 -- 8'. The star formation relation that is seen on disk-averaged scales in other galaxies shows a large scatter on the small scales. We built a catalog of Galactic molecular clouds with measured star formation rates and studied the relations between properties of molecular clouds and star formation. We tested several models of star formation on the catalog of molecular clouds. We found that the dense gas mass shows significant correlations with star formation rates but the depletion time of dense gas varies with other properties of the clouds. We found that the free- fall efficiency is higher in dense gas compared to the general molecular gas of the clouds.

The aim of this thesis is to understand how the structure of galaxies is built by developing a new method to spatially resolve their star formation. Using Ha maps for 2676 galaxies, this thesis shows where star formation is distributed in galaxies during the epoch 0.7 z 1.5 when a third of the total star formation in the history of the universe occurred. Across the star formation rate - stellar mass plane (the "main sequence"), star formation is `spatially coherent': in galaxies with higher than average star formation rates, Ha is enhanced throughout the disk; similarly, in galaxies with low star formation rates Ha is depressed throughout the disk. This places constraints both on the mechanisms for enhancing and quenching star formation as well as on how the structure of galaxies is built. The disk scale length of star formation in galaxies is larger than that of the stars, a direct demonstration that the disks of galaxies grow inside-out. While most star formation in most galaxies occurs in disks, not all of it does. With the first spatially resolved measurement of the Balmer decrement at z 1, it can be seen that galaxies with M* 1010M have significant dust attenuation toward their centers. This means that we are witnessing the build-up of the dense stellar cores of massive galaxies through dust-obscured in-situ star formation. The most massive galaxies are thought to have formed their dense stellar cores at even earlier cosmic epochs. This thesis presents the first confirmed example of a massive galaxy core in the process of formation at z = 2.3. It has one of the highest velocity dispersions ever measured for a normal star forming galaxy and also appears to be building through very dense, dust-enshrouded star formation.
