Book excerpt: In this thesis, we examine the relationship between the equilibrium prices of spatially separated market participants and the transportation network that connects them; we focus in particular on isolating the effect that the transportation network can have on price integration. We first find that certain network structures and link costs can guarantee a bound on price differences between spatially separated participants when there are no capacity constraints. We extend this analysis to the case when there are binding transportation constraints, and generalize the effects of the transportation network on price integration using a time series decomposition. We then develop an empirical methodology, termed the submarket detection method (SDM), which can be used to infer when binding transportation constraints exist by analyzing regional pricing data from a competitive market, and conclude by using the SDM in a case study of the US gasoline market.

Book excerpt: This article introduces a new spatial price analysis methodology based on maximum likelihood estimation of a mixture distribution model incorporating price, transfer cost, and trade flow data. This method permits differentiation between market integration and competitive market equilibrium and derivation of intuitive measures of intermarket tradability, competitive market equilibrium, perfect integration, segmented equilibrium, and segmented disequilibrium. One can also use these estimates to derive semiparametric measures of time-varying regime probabilities to track changing market conditions. An application to trade in soybean meal among Pacific Rim economies demonstrates the usefulness of the method.

We develop a dominant firm model of transport services wherein one firm (the railroad) has market power, but competes in space with a competitive alternative (truck-barge). When constrained, the dominant firm prices to beat the competition, which impedes efficiency when demand has some elasticity. We extend the basic model in a number of directions that include the relationship between monopoly prices and the generalized concavity of the shipper demand functions, the effects of multiple terminal markets, the role of joint production (fronthaul-backhaul markets), and the effects of capacity constraints.

Firms compete by choosing delivered prices, a pricing regime which is often observed for goods with high transportation costs. The model is a very general one: customers have price elastic demand and firms have increasing marginal production and transportation costs. To study this competitive situation, a non-cooperative game is proposed. Existence and general properties of the Nash price and production equilibrium are shown and sufficient conditions that guarantee the existence of a unique price-production-transportation equilibrium are presented. It is shown that the only pricing patterns that can result from equilibrium are basing point, monopoly or mill pricing. A convergent algorithm is shown and demonstrated with an example.

In this paper an alternative methodology, the parity bounds model (PBM) is developed which uses information on transfer costs in addition to food prices to access the efficiency of spatial arbitrage. Monte Carlo experiments using data generated by a point-space spatial price equilibrium model show the PBM to be statistically reliable. An application to Philippine rice markets demonstrates that the PBM detects efficient arbitrage when other tests do not.
