Book Spatial Instability of Compressible Wakes with Three dimensional Disturbances

Download or read book Spatial Instability of Compressible Wakes with Three dimensional Disturbances written by Y. Y. Chan and published by 1974.. This book was released on 1974 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The linear spatial stability of a compressible thin turbulent wake bound by two side walls is analyzed by the stability theory of an inviscid shear flow. The disturbance propagating in the wake is assumed to be three-dimensional. For free stream Mach numbers up to 2 the analysis shows that in the high frequency region the most unstable mode of the wake is induced by two-dimensional disturbances. However, at the low frequency region the wake is more unstable to three-dimensional disturbances than to two-dimensional ones.

This book was released on 2018-07-05 with total page 50 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this paper we present a theoretical and numerical study of the growth of linear disturbances in the high-Reynolds-number and laminar compressible wake behind a flat plate which is aligned with a uniform stream. No ad hoc assumptions are made as to the nature of the undisturbed flow (in contrast to previous investigations) but instead the theory is developed rationally by use of proper wake-profiles which satisfy the steady equations of motion. The initial growth of near wake perturbation is governed by the compressible Rayleigh equation which is studied analytically for long- and short-waves. These solutions emphasize the asymptotic structures involved and provide a rational basis for a nonlinear development. The evolution of arbitrary wavelength perturbations is addressed numerically and spatial stability solutions are presented that account for the relative importance of the different physical mechanisms present, such as three-dimensionality, increasing Mach numbers enough (subsonic) Mach numbers, there exists a region of absolute instability very close to the trailing-edge with the majority of the wake being convectively unstable. At higher Mach numbers (but still not large-hypersonic) the absolute instability region seems to disappear and the maximum available growth-rates decrease considerably. Three-dimensional perturbations provide the highest spatial growth-rates. Papageorgiou, D. T. Unspecified Center NAS1-18605; RTOP 505-90-21-01...

Book An Investigation of the Inviscid Spatial Instability of Compressible Mixing Layers

Download or read book An Investigation of the Inviscid Spatial Instability of Compressible Mixing Layers written by Mei Zhuang and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This dissertation investigates the behavior of both unbounded and bounded compressible plane mixing layers with respect to two- and three-dimensional, spatially growing wave disturbances using linear stability analysis. The mixing layer is formed by two parallel streams with different gases and the flow is assumed to be inviscid and non-reacting. For unbounded mixing layers, the effects of the free-stream Mach number, velocity ratio, temperature ratio, gas constant (molecular weight) ratio and the ratios of specific heats on the linear spatial instability characteristics of a mixing layer are determined. A nearly universal dependence of the normalized maximum amplification rate on the convective Mach number is found for two-dimensional spatially growing disturbances. The effects of the mean flow profiles on the instability behavior of the mixing layers are also studied. It is shown that decreasing the thickness of the total temperature profile relative to the mean velocity profile, or adding a wake component in the mean velocity profile can make the normalized amplification rate decrease slower as the convective Mach number increases for both subsonic and supersonic convective Mach numbers. For an unbounded mixing layer with subsonic convective Mach numbers, there is only one unstable mode propagating with a phase velocity C* sub pm approx. = to the isentropically estimated convective velocity of the large scale structures u* sub c. As the convective Mach number approaches or exceeds unity, there are always two unstable spatial modes. (edc).

Book Stability of Parallel Flows

Download or read book Stability of Parallel Flows written by R. Betchov and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stability of Parallel Flows provides information pertinent to hydrodynamical stability. This book explores the stability problems that occur in various fields, including electronics, mechanics, oceanography, administration, economics, as well as naval and aeronautical engineering. Organized into two parts encompassing 10 chapters, this book starts with an overview of the general equations of a two-dimensional incompressible flow. This text then explores the stability of a laminar boundary layer and presents the equation of the inviscid approximation. Other chapters present the general equations governing an incompressible three-dimensional flow, which requires the massive use of a computer. This book discusses as well the experimental studies on the oscillations of the boundary layer wherein the mean flow is affected by the presence of oscillations. The final chapter describes the concept of the stability of turbulent flows found in boundary layers, wakes, and jets. This book is a valuable resource for physicists, mathematicians, engineers, scientists, and researchers.

Book Instability and Control of Massively Separated Flows

Download or read book Instability and Control of Massively Separated Flows written by Vassilis Theofilis and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-01-03 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains the outcome of the international meeting on instability, control and noise generated by massive flow separation that was organized at the Monash Center, in Prato, Italy, September 4-6, 2013. The meeting served as the final review of the EU-FP7 Instability and Control of Massively Separated Flows Marie Curie travel grant and was supported by the European Office of Aerospace Research and Development. Fifty leading specialists from twelve countries reviewed the progress made since the 50s of the last century and discussed modern analysis techniques, advanced experimental flow diagnostics and recent developments in active flow control techniques from the incompressible to the hypersonic regime. Applications involving massive flow separation and associated instability and noise generation mechanisms of interest to the aeronautical, naval and automotive industries have been addressed from a theoretical, numerical or experimental point of view, making this book a unique source containing the state-of-the-art in separated flow instability and its control.
