Book excerpt: Previous research in the field of geography has generally supported the contention that much of the information that man receives from and about his external environment is filtered through, and distorted in, the very mind that receives the data. For the observer, this filtered information comes to constitute the objective world. Behavioral geography has concentrated on examining this complex phenomenon, seeking to isolate and to understand the influence of those components of external reality that pass these filters, and how they have been altered in the very act of being perceived and assimilated. The argument is made that if scientists can come to understand how and why human minds process information they have received from the outside, and can identify what is transmuted and used, it then becomes possible not only to explain the basis on which individual choices are made by those inhabiting cognized environments, but also to shape the environments themselves so as to influence behavior within them.

Divided into eight chapters, the book begins with preliminary concepts, mainly concerning spatial statistics. The following seven chapters focus on the methodologies needed to assess the correlation between two or more processes; from theory introduced 35 years ago, to techniques that have only recently been published. Furthermore, each chapter contains a section on R computations to explore how the methodology works with real data. References and a list of exercises are included at the end of each chapter. The assessment of the correlation between two spatial processes has been tackled from several different perspectives in a variety of applications fields. In particular, the problem of testing for the existence of spatial association between two georeferenced variables is relevant for posterior modeling and inference. One evident application in this context is the quantification of the spatial correlation between two images (processes defined on a rectangular grid in a two-dimensional space). From a statistical perspective, this problem can be handled via hypothesis testing, or by using extensions of the correlation coefficient. In an image-processing framework, these extensions can also be used to define similarity indices between images.

These characteristics may cause standard econometric techniques to become inappropriate. In this book, I combine several recent research results to construct a comprehensive approach to the incorporation of spatial effects in econometrics. My primary focus is to demonstrate how these spatial effects can be considered as special cases of general frameworks in standard econometrics, and to outline how they necessitate a separate set of methods and techniques, encompassed within the field of spatial econometrics. My viewpoint differs from that taken in the discussion of spatial autocorrelation in spatial statistics - e.g., most recently by Cliff and Ord (1981) and Upton and Fingleton (1985) - in that I am mostly concerned with the relevance of spatial effects on model specification, estimation and other inference, in what I caIl a model-driven approach, as opposed to a data-driven approach in spatial statistics. I attempt to combine a rigorous econometric perspective with a comprehensive treatment of methodological issues in spatial analysis.

It represents a synthesis of the work done on patterns in a number of fields and a large literature is reviewed in the process of the synthesis. Book excerpt: This dissertation addresses problems in statistical analysis of ecological data. First, I propose methods for variable selection and parameter estimation for regression analysis in the context of spatial point pattern data. I assess the selection and estimation properties of these methods via simulation studies and for illustration, apply them to data sets in ecology and epidemiology. Also, I develop theory to show that the parameter estimates have sound statistical properties. Second, I propose a spatial model for ecological composition data with a large number of spatial units and describe a method to perform inference in a Bayesian framework. I apply this method to public land survey data from the state of Wisconsin and analyze simulated data to investigate properties of the proposed method.
