Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Spanish Doubloons Meanwhile I came up to the ranch for a long holi day with Bess and the baby, a holiday which had already stretched itself out to Thanksgiving, and threatened to last until Christmas. People wrote alluringly from town, but what had town to Offer compared with a saddle-horse to yourself, and a lit ter of collie pups to play with, and a baby just learn ing to walk? I even began to consider ranching as a career, and to picture myself striding over my broad acres in top-boots and corduroys. Book excerpt: Camilla E. L. Kenyon was an American author of two novels and several short works. Her first novel was Spanish Doubloons, originally published in 1919 by Bobbs Merrill, also serialized in Munsey's Magazine and republished in a less-costly hardback edition by the A.L. Burt Company. This lively story of a group of treasure hunters on a Pacific island is told from the first person viewpoint of the heroine. The Sketch also said of the book "Spanish Doubloons has the full thrill of its name and something extra. Miss Camilla Kenyon has given a jolly turn to the treasure-hunt yarn...."

Book Early Spanish and Portuguese Coinage in America Classic Reprint

Download or read book Early Spanish and Portuguese Coinage in America Classic Reprint written by James Carson Brevoort and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-30 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Early Spanish and Portuguese Coinage in America Torquemada, in his Monarchia Indiana, Vol. I, p. 614, gives a rather confused account of the successive coinages in Mexico. He describes the ingots, quoit-shaped plates and gold-dust, used in exchanges, and how the Indians, unable to weigh or determine the value of the metal, were defrauded. Copper coins were then struck of four types, cuartos, half-cuartos, four and two maravedis, but the date of their issue is not given. The author says that this coinage was similar to one in use in Spain and in the Island of San Domingo. The Mexican copper coins were so distasteful to the natives that no ordinance could keep them in circulation, and they were tossed into the lake; two hundred thousand pesos worth of copper being thus lost in one year. That so much Copper should have been coined is improbable. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Century of Discovery: Biographical Sketches of the Portuguese and Spanish Navigators From Prince Henry to Pizarro In the rugged mountain tract which separates the arid tableland of central Spain from the humid coast of the Bay of Biscay we trace the origin of the modern states of the Pyrenean peninsula. Into this wild and scarcely accessible region, which occupies the whole north-west corner of the peninsula, and lies among the Cantabrian Mountains, a thousand Christian families fled before the wild storm of Arabs which in 711 destroyed at Xeres de la Frontera the kingdom of the West Goths, and forthwith inundated the whole peninsula. Thus was formed the Christian state of Asturias; which still enjoys peculiar rights among the Spanish provinces. From it the Crown Princes of Spain have been used to take their title, and its inhabitants boast with genuine Spanish arrogance that they, whose soil the foot of the Moslem has never trodden, are the noblest of all the Spaniards. From mere defence the Asturians soon proceeded to direct attacks upon the invaders, and during the following centuries the neighbouring states, by dint of never-ceasing struggles, were gradually recovered by the Christians. Book excerpt: Twentieth-century sleuthing methods are linked with the romance and mystery of the past in this true story of a treasure hunt that has yielded millions. Over 250 years ago a Spanish treasure armada was wrecked on the Florida reefs, and ten richly laden vessels were sunk. In time they were forgotten. In the l 940's Kip Wagner, then a Florida construction man, picked up the first clues to the location of the wrecked ships. They were scarce: occasional blackened silver coins discovered here and there along the beach. But Kip Wagner's imagination was fired, and with the help of his friend and physician, Dr. Kelso, he began the long research and search operations that are described in this engrossing book. They were joined by a small group of other men and formed the Real Eight Corporationappropriately named for the Spanish ocho reales, or piece of eight. Most of the team had other jobs, some of them at nearby Cape Kennedy, and could hunt treasure only in their spare time. But they persisted. The work was arduous, at times dangerous. There were setbacks, disappointments, grueling underwater ordeals. But in time the rewards were sensational -thousands of silver pieces of eight and golden doubloons, silver bars and bullion, gold ingots, gold rings and pendants, priceless Chinese porcelain, a gold necklace appraised by a museum at $50,000, three million dollars in treasure recovered so far by this band of hard-working, adventurous, persistent men.

This book was released on 2017-10-28 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Catalogue of the Valuable Collection of Coins of the Late Joseph J. Mickley: Comprising Early British, English, German, Spanish, French, Italian, Swedish, Danish, Chinese and American Coins and Medals, in Gold, Silver and Copper The attention of numismatists is called to the fine condition and great variety of modern silver and copper foreign coins in the within catalogue. The late J. J. Lilickley enjoyed rare opportunities (during a recent three years' tour of Europe) of collecting complete sets of this class of coins; some of which he collected by authority of the United States government, visiting for the purpose some thirty-five mints of difierent nations. In this way, and by purchase, a number of duplicate sets and single pieces were obtained, which form a part of this cabinet. The American series, though far from being complete, contains many rare specimens, a portion of which are in proof or uncirculated condition. Great care has been taken to give the exact condition and rarity of the important examples in this really interesting collection. Mr. Illiclcley's well-known aversion to counterfeit coins, go is a guarantee that copies (unless of historical interest) are few and far between, and when met with, are properly described. Over description has been carefully avoided. Having had a rather large experience in arranging cabinets for public sale, the subscriber feels confident the present efiort will prove satisfactory to all concerned. Book excerpt: The modern horror story grew and developed across the nineteenth century, embracing categories as diverse as ghost stories, the supernatural and psychological horror, medical and scientific horror, colonial horror, and tales of the uncanny and precognition. This anthology brings together twenty-nine of the greatest horror stories of the period, from 1816 to 1912, from the British, Irish, American, and European traditions. It ranges widely across the sub-genres to encompass authors whose terror-inducing powers remain unsurpassed. The book includes stories by some of the best writers of the century — Hoffmann, Poe, Balzac, Dickens, Hawthorne, Melville, and Zola — as well as established genre classics from M. R. James, Arthur Machen, Bram Stoker, Algernon Blackwood, Charlotte Perkins Gilman, and others. It includes rare and little-known pieces by writers such as William Maginn, Francis Marion Crawford, W. F. Harvey, and William Hope Hodgson, and shows the important role played by periodicals in popularizing the horror story. Wherever possible, stories are reprinted in their first published form, with background information about their authors and helpful, contextualizing annotation.
