Book Making Peace with Spain

    Book Details:
  • Author : Whitelaw Reid
  • Publisher : University of Texas Press
  • Release : 2014-09-10
  • ISBN : 0292769245
  • Pages : 303 pages

Download or read book Making Peace with Spain written by Whitelaw Reid and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2014-09-10 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Whitelaw Reid, according to H. Wayne Morgan, was a “leading newspaperman, more than an occasional diplomat, a power in his party’s politics, a supporter of some of the best in his era’s culture . . . Of all his legacy, perhaps the record he left of his part in the Peace of Paris is the most significant and most interesting. It not only reveals the workings of his mind and of the peace conference, but also suggests the complex currents that carried his country into the realities of world power in the twentieth century.” In editing Reid’s diary, Morgan used much material pertinent to the Paris Peace Conference of 1898, employed here for the first time. This material is a rich assortment of archival matter: the Reid Papers, the John Hay Papers, the John Bassett Moore Papers, and the McKinley Papers, in the Library of Congress; the Peace Commission records, in the National Archives; and unpublished materials in the Central Files of the Department of State. Whitelaw Reid, as a war correspondent during the Civil War, as clerk of the House Military Affairs Committee, and later as a successor to Horace Greeley on the Tribune, gained access to the leaders of his times and insight into their actions. In 1889 he was appointed U.S. Minister to France by Harrison, and in 1892 he had the dubious honor of being chosen as Harrison’s running mate on the losing presidential ticket. An influential friend and supporter of President McKinley and an occasional advisor to him, Reid was no stranger to politics and to international diplomacy when McKinley appointed him to the Peace Commission that wrote the treaty concluding the Spanish-American War. As a matter of fact, Reid’s opinion reflected the administration’s attitude of expansionism, the policy of Manifest Destiny—or “imperialism,” as it was later called. Reid’s diary records the details of the sessions of the Joint Peace Commission of Paris from September through a large part of December of 1898. His day-by-day entries reveal the complexity of issues to be considered, the tactics of both the Spanish and the American Commissions in attempting to gain advantage for their respective governments, the interplay of the personalities of the once-proud Spaniards and the brash Americans, the political objectives influencing the points of view of the various members, and the maneuverings that brought about the final resolution of debated issues.

Book Spain 2021 Article IV Consultation Press Release Staff Report and Statement by the Executive Director for Spain

Download or read book Spain 2021 Article IV Consultation Press Release Staff Report and Statement by the Executive Director for Spain written by International Monetary and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2022-02-16 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Spanish economy is recovering from the deep recession caused by the COVID pandemic and employment is already above its pre-pandemic level. A highly successful vaccination campaign helped limit the impact of the recent wave of infections on hospitalizations and economic activity. Output is expected to return to its pre-pandemic level by the end of 2022. However, there is significant uncertainty around the recovery path related to the evolution of the pandemic and the duration of global supply bottlenecks. The pace of absorption and the effectiveness of use of Next Generation EU (NGEU) funds will also affect growth in the coming years. In the near term, the key policy challenge is to continue to provide targeted pandemic support while facilitating resource reallocation and a transformation to a greener and more inclusive economy.

Book Walking Amid Spanish Lights

Download or read book Walking Amid Spanish Lights written by Walter Glover, MTS and published by Covenant Books, Inc.. This book was released on 2022-12-08 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Walter Glover's fall on Mount Rainier led to the discovery of three aneurysms in three separate body systems, a medical rarity. That persuaded the senior-citizen adventure author to abandon his worldwide quest to climb on all Seven Summit mountains. Repurposed by open-heart surgery, he reimagined his dream. Forget climbing famous mountains--hike long distances. Walter's first challenge, chronicled in this thrilling book, was 500 miles long (well, 492), trekking El Camino, The Way of Saint James, across Spain. Called The Way, it is named for Jesus' apostle, whose remains rest in a cathedral at the end of the journey. The most compelling story Walter tells is his own meeting with St. James at his cathedral, concerning his deceased brother. Glover fits into mobile Camino communities, befriending people from around the world, as he did on mountaineering expeditions he's written about. The final of four books of the retired hospital chaplain's popular Seven Mountain Story series, Camino recounts adventures of 40 days of 14-mile distances hiked from village to village with nights in hostels. He was among an estimated quarter-million pilgrims on Camino in 2014. The book's centerpieces are spirituality and adventure. Walter's altruistic reason to hike--raise money for children's wellness initiatives, almost $150,000. His writing and activism inspired kids to seniors. The ugly irony, the superhealthy adventurer now has a chronic disease--Parkinson's. Exercising now has significant limitations for Walter. His outlook, "My life continues vibrant, hopeful, and full of gratitude and light. I believe my best work is in front of me."
