Download or read book Spain approaching SCUM state written by José Quintás Alonso and published by Bubok. This book was released on 2015-07-10 with total page 63 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "I have seen it fit to draw attention to the SCUM Manifesto, written by Valerie Jean Solanas (born in Ventnor, New Jersey, 1936). Excerpts are included from her text to present her opinions on the problems she saw with society and to show her vision of a "perfect" future society and how both women and men would function (or not) in that society. The reader should not be surprised in any way, but rather should keep in mind the contradiction the Manifesto poses to advanced society, even though some feminist centers recognize its ideas as valid and they can even be found in some aspects of the current Spanish law against gender violence (LIVG).Websites and other visuals are included in the text in order to demonstrate the relevance of the Manifesto, as surprising and categorical as it is in its claims. The text provides an excellent opportunity to highlight something fundamental: the law (LIVG) does not take into account gender violence exercised by women on men, and it also does not explain why there cannot be gender violence without having or having had (at some point) an emotional relationship between the perpetrator (man) and the victim (woman), or why it discriminates based on sex and eliminates the presumption of innocence on behalf of the accused male.It is convenient to rethink these issues in the heat of empirical evidence rather than ideological evidence, and seek agreement with neighboring countries (EU-28)."
Download or read book Documenting Spain Artists Exhibition Culture and the Modern Nation 1929 1939 written by and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The news media have given us potent demonstrations of the ambiguity of ostensibly truthful representations of public events. Jordana Mendelson uses this ambiguity as a framework for the study of Spanish visual culture from 1929 to 1939--a decade marked, on the one hand, by dictatorship, civil war, and Franco's rise to power and, on the other, by a surge in the production of documentaries of various types, from films and photographs to international exhibitions. Mendelson begins with an examination of El Pueblo Español, a model Spanish village featured at the 1929 International Exposition in Barcelona. She then discusses Buñuel's and Dalí's documentary films, relating them not only to French Surrealism but also to issues of rural tradition in the formation of regional and national identities. Her highly original book concludes with a discussion of the 1937 Spanish Pavilion, where Picasso's famed painting of the Fascist bombing of a Basque town--Guernica--was exhibited along with monumental photomurals by Josep Renau. Based upon years of archival research, Mendelson's book opens a new perspective on the cultural politics of a turbulent era in modern Spain. It explores the little-known yet rich intersection between avant-garde artists and government institutions. It shows as well the surprising extent to which Spanish modernity was fashioned through dialogue between the seemingly opposed fields of urban and rural, fine art, and mass culture.

Download or read book Ninth International Conference on Water Pollution Research written by S. H. Jenkins and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-02 with total page 1289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ninth International Conference on Water Pollution Research focuses on the methods, measures, and technologies involved in the treatment of wastewater, including the treatment of sludges and pollutants in bodies of water. The selection first offers information on carbon adsorption as an advanced wastewater treatment process, nitrification of surface water, and methods for measuring the thickenability of sludges. Topics include factors that influence adsorption, principle of biological nitrification, and characterization of sludges. The text also discusses the utilization of pulped newsprint as a conditioning aid in the vacuum filtration of a municipal sludge and the purification of pulp-bleaching wastewater with aluminum oxide. The publication reviews the properties and treatment of lime-algae sludge, concept of filterability, prediction of bacterial pollution in sea water, and the role of retained particles in deep bed filtration. The text also describes the immediate and continuous measurement of activated sludge quantity in sewage biological treatment tanks; comparative assessment of pollution loadings from non-point sources in urban land use; and wastewater control technology in steam-electric power plants. The book is a vital reference for readers interested in water pollution research.
Download or read book Valley of Shining Stone written by Lesley Poling-Kempes and published by University of Arizona Press. This book was released on 1997-07 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: North by northwest from old Santa Fe is the winding road to Abiquiu (ah-be-cue'), Ghost Ranch, and el Valle de la Piedra Lumbre, the Valley of Shining Stone: mythical names in a near-mythical place, captured for the ages in the famous paintings of Georgia O'Keeffe. O'Keeffe saw the magic of sandstone cliffs and turquoise skies, but her life and death here are only part of the story. Reading almost like a novel, this book spills over with other legends buried deep in time, just as some of North America's oldest dinosaur bones lie hidden beneath the valley floor. Here are the stories of Pueblo Indians who have claimed this land for generations. Here, too, are Utes, Navajos, Jicarilla Apaches, Hispanos, and Anglos-many lives tangled together, yet also separate and distinct. Underlying these stories is the saga of Ghost Ranch itself, a last living vestige of the Old West ideal of horses, cowboys, and wide-open spaces. Readers will meet a virtual Who's Who of visitors from "dude ranch" days, ranging from such luminaries as Willa Cather, Ansel Adams, and Charles Lindbergh to World War II scientist J. Robert Oppenheimer and his colleagues, who were working on the top-secret atomic bomb in nearby Los Alamos. Moving on through the twentieth century, the book describes struggles to preserve the valley's wild beauty in the face of land development and increased tourism. Just as the Piedra Lumbre landscape has captivated countless wayfarers over hundreds of years, so its stories cast their own spell. Indispensable for travelers, pure pleasure for history buffs and general readers, these pages are a magic carpet to a magic land: Abiquiu, Ghost Ranch, the Valley of Shining Stone.
