Book Transforming the Doctor s Office

Download or read book Transforming the Doctor s Office written by Ann Sloan Devlin and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-04-24 with total page 179 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the parking lot to the exam room, doctors can improve the physical surroundings for their patients, yet often they do not. Given the numerous and varied duties doctors must perform, it may fall to the design profession to implement changes, many based on research, to improve healthcare experiences. From location and layout to furnishings and positive distractions, this book provides evidence-based information about the physical environment to help doctors and those who design medical workspaces improve the experience of health care. Along with its research base, a special aspect of this book is the integration of relevant historical material about the office practice of physicians at the beginning of the twentieth century. Many of their design solutions are viable today. In addition to improving the physical design of healthcare facilities, author Ann Sloan Devlin is the granddaughter, daughter, and niece of physicians, as well as the granddaughter and daughter of nurses. She worked in a hospital during college, and has visited a good many practitioners’ offices in medical office buildings and ambulatory care settings. This book addresses an overlooked location of care: the doctor’s office suite.

Book Safety in Cell and Tissue Culture

Download or read book Safety in Cell and Tissue Culture written by G. Stacey and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is now more than half a century since animal cells first came into regular use in the laboratory. Instances of laboratory acquired infection and con tamination of therapeutic products, derived from the use of animal cell cultures are rare. The use of animal cells, in addition to an established role in the production of vaccines and therapeutic proteins, has many new medical applications including gene therapy, tissue engineering and cell therapy. Furthermore, C;ldvances in molecular and cell biology are enabling rapid development and application of these technologies and the development of new and more sensitive methods, such as nucleic acid amplification, for the characterisation of cells and the detection of adven titious agents. However, it is clear that there is no room for complacency in this field and the recent expansion in the use of animal cells in the manufacture of medical products and the development of new biological assays for diagnostic and pharmaco-toxicological screening, underlines the need for vigilance regarding the correct and safe use of animal cells as substrates. This book is therefore very timely and should prove to be a highly valuable text, finding a wider audience beyond those with respon sibility for laboratory safety. The book guides the reader from fundamental cell biology issues and the establishment of new in vitro methods, through testing and validation of cell lines and on to issues in the use of animal cells in manufacturing processes.

Book Human Dimension and Interior Space

Download or read book Human Dimension and Interior Space written by Julius Panero and published by Watson-Guptill. This book was released on 2014-01-21 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study of human body measurements on a comparative basis is known as anthropometrics. Its applicability to the design process is seen in the physical fit, or interface, between the human body and the various components of interior space. Human Dimension and Interior Space is the first major anthropometrically based reference book of design standards for use by all those involved with the physical planning and detailing of interiors, including interior designers, architects, furniture designers, builders, industrial designers, and students of design. The use of anthropometric data, although no substitute for good design or sound professional judgment should be viewed as one of the many tools required in the design process. This comprehensive overview of anthropometrics consists of three parts. The first part deals with the theory and application of anthropometrics and includes a special section dealing with physically disabled and elderly people. It provides the designer with the fundamentals of anthropometrics and a basic understanding of how interior design standards are established. The second part contains easy-to-read, illustrated anthropometric tables, which provide the most current data available on human body size, organized by age and percentile groupings. Also included is data relative to the range of joint motion and body sizes of children. The third part contains hundreds of dimensioned drawings, illustrating in plan and section the proper anthropometrically based relationship between user and space. The types of spaces range from residential and commercial to recreational and institutional, and all dimensions include metric conversions. In the Epilogue, the authors challenge the interior design profession, the building industry, and the furniture manufacturer to seriously explore the problem of adjustability in design. They expose the fallacy of designing to accommodate the so-called average man, who, in fact, does not exist. Using government data, including studies prepared by Dr. Howard Stoudt, Dr. Albert Damon, and Dr. Ross McFarland, formerly of the Harvard School of Public Health, and Jean Roberts of the U.S. Public Health Service, Panero and Zelnik have devised a system of interior design reference standards, easily understood through a series of charts and situation drawings. With Human Dimension and Interior Space, these standards are now accessible to all designers of interior environments.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Designing Public Spaces in Hospitals illustrates that in addition to their aesthetic function, public spaces in hospitals play a fundamental role concerning people’s satisfaction and experience of health care. The book highlights how spatial properties, such as accessibility, visibility, proximity, and intelligibility affect people’s behavior and interactions in hospital public spaces. Based on the authors’ research, the book includes detailed analysis of three hospitals and criteria that can support the design in circulation areas, arrival and entrance, first point of welcome, reception, and the interface between city and hospital. Illustrated with 150 black and white images.

When he dies, he leaves his 13-year-old daughter May and her mother, Ann, with targets on their backs. When it is made clear to both women that they aren’t safe if they are together, precautions are taken. Five years on, a newly 18-year-old May is sunning herself at her grandparents’ house in Cornwall, having recently been expelled from the high-security training academy that had been her home. The beautiful Tristan Knight sits in silent shock as his mentor, Bryan Malus, describes the events that led to May’s expulsion, assigning her as Tristan’s first client after his graduation. Tristan begrudgingly goes to Cornwall to guard May, whom he hasn’t seen in five years, and sparks fly. When the duo returns from town, their bickering is cut short as they take in the sight of the man lying dead on the front porch. Tristan and May try to outrun the men chasing them while simultaneously trying to decipher the message Bill Peters left for only his daughter to find. As Tristan and May grow impossibly closer, secrets are revealed, and trust is put to the ultimate test.
