Book Form Space in Japanese Architecture

Download or read book Form Space in Japanese Architecture written by Norman F. Carver and published by Documan Press Limited. This book was released on 1993 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This groundbreaking book, first published in the 1950's & long out-of-print, has been greatly expanded with more than 100 new photographs superbly printed from all new laser-scanned plates. Not a historical survey, the book illuminates principles underlying traditional Japanese architecture's elegant forms & lyrical spaces with examples from renowned palaces to obscure temples --documented during Carver's years in Japan. Reviewing the first edition of FORM & SPACE IN JAPANESE ARCHITECTURE, critics wrote, "Carver teaches through his camera how to see Japanese architecture from an angle quite new & different...he shows the oldest is akin to the newest"; "...his fresh sense makes even we Japanese find new ways of looking at Japanese architecture which has escaped most people --there is almost no other book of its kind." Architect Walter Gropius called it "outstanding, particularly as a stimulation for the contemporary architect...an extraordinary collection of photographs...of all the books it has the best understanding of what I believe to be Japanese architecture." Norman Carver, Jr. also produces the acclaimed series on world vernacular architecture, including ITALIAN HILLTOWNS, IBERIAN VILLAGES, SILENT CITIES OF MEXICO & THE MAYA, NORTH AFRICAN VILLAGES, & JAPANESE FOLKHOUSES. Orderline (800) 542-2772.

Book excerpt: In ultra-crowded Japan, the constraints of space and form inspire rather than confound. That is readily apparent in this fascinating volume featuring impossibly tiny, narrow, odd-shaped habitats that have been transformed into peaceful, elegant oases through the innovative use of light, openness and visual harmony.

Book House and Home in Modern Japan

Download or read book House and Home in Modern Japan written by Jordan Sand and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2020-05-11 with total page 502 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "A house is a site, the bounds and focus of a community. It is also an artifact, a material extension of its occupants’ lives. This book takes the Japanese house in both senses, as site and as artifact, and explores the spaces, commodities, and conceptions of community associated with it in the modern era. As Japan modernized, the principles that had traditionally related house and family began to break down. Even where the traditional class markers surrounding the house persisted, they became vessels for new meanings, as housing was resituated in a new nexus of relations. The house as artifact and the artifacts it housed were affected in turn. The construction and ornament of houses ceased to be stable indications of their occupants’ social status, the home became a means of personal expression, and the act of dwelling was reconceived in terms of consumption. Amid the breakdown of inherited meanings and the fluidity of modern society, not only did the increased diversity of commodities lead to material elaboration of dwellings, but home itself became an object of special attention, its importance emphasized in writing, invoked in politics, and articulated in architectural design. The aim of this book is to show the features of this culture of the home as it took shape in Japan."

Book Urban Spaces in Japan

Download or read book Urban Spaces in Japan written by Christoph Brumann and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-06-14 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Urban Spaces in Japan explores the workings of power, money and the public interest in the planning and design of Japanese space. Through a set of vivid case studies of well-known Japanese cities including Tokyo, Kobe, and Kyoto, this book examines the potential of civil society in contemporary planning debates. Further, it addresses the implications of Japan's biggest social problem – the demographic decline – for Japanese cities, and demonstrates the serious challenges and exciting possibilities that result from the impending end of Japan's urban growth. Presenting a synthetic approach that reflects both the physical aspects and the social significance of urban spaces, this book scrutinizes the precise patterns of urban expansion and shrinkage. In doing so, it also summarizes current theories of public space, urban space, and the body in space which are relevant to both Japan and the wider international debate. With detailed case studies and more general reflections from a broad range of disciplines, this collection of essays demonstrates the value of cross-disciplinary cooperation. As such, it is of interest to students and scholars of geography and urban planning as well as history, anthropology and cultural studies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book shifts the emphasis on how we choose to read Japanese architecture and urbanism: It focuses on phenomena and meanings rather than forms and objects, and prioritizes intentions and legacies over the mechanics of design. The terms "architecture" and "urbanism" in the book's subtitle must therefore be understood in the broadest possible sense: They encompass all aspects that shape the built environment at all scales - buildings, cities, materials, public spaces, rituals, landscapes, processes, perceptions, semantics, urban form, urban life, people - all woven together.
