Book Ethics in Banking

Download or read book Ethics in Banking written by Cristina Rovera and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-12-16 with total page 185 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Banks are frequently considered usurers. Is it possible to talk about ethics when you analyse banking activity? This book focuses on this question and starts with the history and the philosophy. Philosophers like Aristotle, Immanuel Kant and John Stuart Mill proposed different theories about the need for ethics in finance. If we accept Mill's thought, the production of wealth in society is driven by the personal pursuit of profit. But - unfortunately - this does not, on its own, ensure collective well-being. It must be guided by a superior mechanism which transforms it into wealth for all. This introduces the role of financial institutions, which often have to comply with legal obligations. The book focuses on the role that these institutions have in supporting the ‘ethical’ use of money. The author analyses a number of cases in banks and the financial industry and discusses topics like anti-money laundering, anti-usury, islamic finance, microcredit and bank rescue systems, including not only best practices but also examples of unethical financial management.

Book excerpt: Consumer credit has become a topical issue for researchers, regulators and the banking industry in Europe as a result of increasing market integration, regulatory changes and a growing tendency of households to use debt to finance consumption. This study uses a cross-country approach to look at a broad range of issues related to consumer credit in Europe. Focusing on both the supply and demand sides, it takes into account the structure and performance of financial intermediaries, the socio-demographic and economic profile of households and their risk of over-indebtedness, as well as the regulatory framework, such as the new Consumer Credit Directive. In the light of this analysis, measures for the prevention and management of over-indebtedness are presented. Book The Castle on the Hudson

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Charles Paterno was seven when he left Castelmezzano, a small mountain town in Basilicata to set sail on one of the rattletrap ships headed to America. Thirty years later he was one of the top builders in New York City, among the first to construct the skyscrapers that would form the world's most famous skyline. Intelligence, brilliance, intuition and an ability to stay ahed of the times made him a leading figure in the life of Manhattan. He created garden communities, focused on new technologies and turned to the best architects. Paterno didn't just want to offer houses, but new lifestyles to tens of thousands of people. His first American dream looked like a white castle at the northernmost tip of Manhattan, where he lived for years with his wife and son, sorrounded by a small but very loyal retinue. A friend of Giuseppe Prezzolini, he donated a library of 20.000 books, the Paterno Library, to the Casa Italiana at Columbia University. Fiorello La Guardia, the Italian-American mayor of New York City, called him a genius. Born into poverty, Paterno died a wealthy man on the green of the most exclusive country club in Westchester.

Book excerpt: This text is concerned with the increasingly important and problematic area of financial exclusion, broadly defined as the inability and/or reluctance of particular societal groups to access mainstream financial services. There is growing evidence that deregulation in developed financial sectors improves financial inclusion for some societal groups, but may at the same time exacerbate it for others. In developing countries access to financial services is typically limited and therefore providing wider access to such services can aid financial and economic development.

Book excerpt: In 2016, few people had ever heard of Bitcoin or blockchain, initial coin offerings were non-existent, and U.S. financial regulatory agencies had yet to react to the emergence of non-bank financial services providers. The FinTech industry has changed dramatically since then: Bitcoin has captured the public imagination and spawned new derivatives products, you can apply for a mortgage on your smartphone, initial coin offerings are now a viable alternative to venture capital funding, and the Office of the Comptroller Currency has proposed a new kind of bank charter specifically for FinTech firms. While many have focused on the technologies underpinning the FinTech revolution, less attention has been placed on how these technologies fit within the current financial regulatory framework. Understanding this framework is critical to the long-term success of any FinTech startup. While technology startups in other sectors may predicate their business on breaking rules and ignoring regulations, such a strategy is sure to fail if deployed by a FinTech firm. This is because the financial industry is heavily regulated by multiple state and federal agencies that often have overlapping authority. Being a successful FinTech firm requires more than just great technology; it also requires an understanding of the laws and regulations applicable to your business. This book aims to provide you with that understanding. You will learn about the critical legal, regulatory, and policy issues associated with: cryptocurrencies, initial coin offerings, online lending, new payments and wealth management technologies, and financial account aggregators. In addition, you will learn how regulatory agencies in the U.S. have adjusted to the emergence of new financial technologies and how one specific agency, the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency, has proposed a path for FinTech firms to become regulated banks. You will also learn the basics of how banks are regulated in the U.S. If you are unfamiliar with how these new financial technologies work, fear not. Each chapter begins with a high-level overview of the technology. Understanding the legal and regulatory framework applicable to new financial technologies is critical to the long-term success of any FinTech startup. FinTech companies that begin operating with a firm grasp of the laws and regulations applicable to their business can not only avoid the pitfalls that have ensnared many a FinTech before them, but also gain a competitive advantage and make the company a more attractive investment for venture capital firms and other potential investors.
