It takes into account the writer's lifelong concerns but places them in the context of the universal value of his writing, generated by his modernist passions and his fascination with the grotesque - an artistic device that was consonant with his need to portray life in all its complexities. The author relies on the grotesque as an element that unifies Jasieński's futuristic poetry with his prose. Especially important in this regard is the close reading of Jasieński's satiric grotesques written in the Soviet Union. The author does not avoid the intricacies and difficult questions of Jasieński's ideological commitment but focuses mainly on the consequences that the highly ambivalent and ambiguous nature of the grotesque has on the interpretation of his work.

Book excerpt: The music of Shostakovich has been at the centre of interest of both the general public and dedicated scholars throughout the last twenty years. Most of the relevant literature, however, is of a biographical nature. The focus of this book is musical irony. It offers new methodologies for the semiotic analysis of music, and inspects the ironical messages in Shostakovich?s music independently of political and biographical bias. Its approach to music is interdisciplinary, comparing musical devices with the artistic principles and literary analyses of satire, irony, parody and the grotesque. Each one of these is firstly inspected and defined as a separate subject, independent of music. The results of these inspections are subsequently applied to music, firstly music in general and then more specifically to the music of Shostakovich. The composer?s cultural and historical milieux are taken into account and, where relevant, inspected and analysed separately before their application to the music.

It concentrates on Central and Eastern Europe, introducing the Western reader to the variety and ingenuity of this region’s literary traditions, ranging from German and Russian to Lithuanian and Romanian literatures. At the same time, it seeks to highlight the importance of the grotesque mode of writing in the region. It includes new insights and interpretations of theories on grotesque and Menippean satire including (but not limited to) the works of Mikhail Bakhtin. The historic scope of the volume ranges from the legacies of Nazi dictatorship and exile to the post-communist times, but it is especially focused on the Soviet era. Scholars, not only from Central and Eastern Europe, but also from Great Britain, Ireland, and Turkey, analyze the literary devices of the grotesque, examining the relationship between the socio-political background and subversive representations of the grotesque. Many studies take on a comparative and transnational approach. Alternatively, some studies aim to present important and innovative creators of grotesque texts in greater detail. Book excerpt: Abstract: The grotesque in Soviet literature ls a field of study whlch has been neglected both in the Soviet Union and the West. In the Soviet Union interest in the grotesque reached a high point in the formalist criticism of the twenties, since the grotesque is one of the most clearly expressed devices of defamiliarisation. After a long period of taboo a revival takes place in the sixties. An attempt has been made in thls thesis to define the grotesque and to apply this definition to the works of V. Mayakovaky, M. Bulgakoy and E. Schwartz. We are primarily concerned with the structural features of their grotesque and the relationshlp of these to comedy and tragedy. While very similar in its structure and its use of comedy devices, the grotesque of all three writers differs substantially in its nature. We have attempted to establish the reasons for the differences and to define the function of their grotesque.
