Book The Land of the Thunderbolt Mountains

Download or read book The Land of the Thunderbolt Mountains written by Dora d'Istria and published by I. B. Tauris. This book was released on 2015-12-30 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dora d'Istria was a distinguished Albanian-Romanian aristocrat whose unusual and stimulating ideas offer a fascinating perspective on 19th-century European life. She was born into the ruling family of Romania, married a Russian duke and moved in the uppermost circles of society, counting Longfellow as her correspondent among many other eminent literary figures. Her wealth and connections enabled her to pursue her interest in European cultural history and she was passionate about the history of her native-land, Albania. She was fluent in several languages and this book vividly demonstrates her dedication to many good causes, including women's rights and Albanian nationalism. Published in English for the first time, The Land of the Thunderbolt Mountains showcases D'Istria's writings about Albania. Through the medium of songs and folklore, d'Istria analyses an overlooked but important aspect of Eastern European history - the theme of nationality and the role of women in its development - and examines in detail the role of Albanian women in different regions of the country, from an original female perspective. Beautifully written, The Land of the Thunderbolt Mountains is a treat for everyone interested in the history of the Balkans and Albania.

Book excerpt: A groundbreaking critique of the West's historical, cultural, and political perceptions of the East that is—three decades after its first publication—one of the most important books written about our divided world. "Intellectual history on a high order ... and very exciting." —The New York Times In this wide-ranging, intellectually vigorous study, Said traces the origins of "orientalism" to the centuries-long period during which Europe dominated the Middle and Near East and, from its position of power, defined "the orient" simply as "other than" the occident. This entrenched view continues to dominate western ideas and, because it does not allow the East to represent itself, prevents true understanding.

Book The Orient the Liberal Movement and the Eastern Crisis of 1839 41

Download or read book The Orient the Liberal Movement and the Eastern Crisis of 1839 41 written by P. E. Caquet and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-09-29 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on the Eastern Crisis of 1839-41, closely examining the first instance of coordinated Western intervention in the Middle East during the modern era. Readers can explore topics such as how culture, domestic politics, and ideology shaped diplomacy in this landmark crisis, and the importance role played by religion - including, alongside mainstream Christianity, the Protestant Zionist movement. Highly informative and fully researched, this book suggests that the Eastern Crisis - and its associated diplomatic and military efforts - marked the first of many modern-era attempts to “improve” the region by moulding it in a Western image, providing scholars with a new perspective on this period of history.

Download or read book Qayraw n written by William Gallois and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2024-04-04 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the last years of the nineteenth century, the Tunisian city of Qayrawān suddenly found itself covered in murals. Concentrated on and around the city’s Great Mosque, these monumental artworks were only visible for about fifty years, from the 1880s through the 1930s. This book investigates the fascinating history of who created these outdoor paintings and why. Using visual archaeological methods, William Gallois reconstructs the visual history of these works and vividly brings them back to life. He locates pictorial records of the murals from the backdrops of photographs, postcards, and other forms of European ephemera. In Qayrawān, he identifies a form of religious painting that transposed traditional aesthetic forms such as house decoration, embroidery, and tattooing—which lay exclusively within the domains of women—onto the body of a conquered city. Gallois argues that these works were created by women as a form of “emergency art,” intended to offer amuletic protection for the community, and demonstrates how they differ markedly from “classical” Islamic antecedents and modern modes of Arab cultural production in the Middle East and North Africa. Based on extensive archival research, this study is both a record of a unique moment in the history of art and a challenge to rethink the spiritual force and agency of a group of anonymous female artists whose paintings aspired to help save the world at a time of great peril. It will be welcomed by scholars of art history, Islamic studies, Middle East studies, and the history of magic.

Book excerpt: A page-turning novel that is also an exploration of the great philosophical concepts of Western thought, Jostein Gaarder's Sophie's World has fired the imagination of readers all over the world, with more than twenty million copies in print. One day fourteen-year-old Sophie Amundsen comes home from school to find in her mailbox two notes, with one question on each: "Who are you?" and "Where does the world come from?" From that irresistible beginning, Sophie becomes obsessed with questions that take her far beyond what she knows of her Norwegian village. Through those letters, she enrolls in a kind of correspondence course, covering Socrates to Sartre, with a mysterious philosopher, while receiving letters addressed to another girl. Who is Hilde? And why does her mail keep turning up? To unravel this riddle, Sophie must use the philosophy she is learning—but the truth turns out to be far more complicated than she could have imagined.
