This book was released on 1995 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This long-awaited edition brings together for the first time 366 letters, cards and telegrams exchanged between Craig and his patron the cosmopolitan Count Kessler. An important primary source, illuminated by Dr Newman's commentary, it focuses on three areas of particular importance: - 1. Craig's artistic ideas and the spread of his influence through exhibitions and books; proposals are developed for work with Otto Brahm, Eleonora Duse, Max Reinhardt, Henry van de Velde, Eduard Verkade, Leopold Jessner, Dyaghilev, Beerbohm Tree, C. B. Cochran, and others. 2. Kessler's Cranach Press Hamlet with wood-engraved illustrations by Craig; this is a landmark in the history of twentieth-century book design and printing whose genesis is now fully revealed in these letters and amplified with reproductions of eighteen trial page proofs. 3. The relationship between an artist and his patron. Exceptionally detailed indexes are an additional feature of this book

Download or read book Shakespeare on screen The Henriad written by Nathalie Vienne-Guerrin (éd.) and published by Presses universitaires de Rouen et du Havre. This book was released on with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Filming plays from a tetralogy of history plays implies specific problems and strategies. The papers in this volume show that the plays are parts of a series, and can hardly be staged or filmed without referring to one another. What does the big screen bring to the representation of history, battles and national issues? When do ideological interpretations stop being triggered by the text itself? By deciphering the different ways in which meaning is created and ideology is conveyed, whether it be through specific aesthetics, performances, intertextuality or cultural codes, the papers in this volume all take part in the on-going exploration of what Shakespeare's contrasting afterlives keep saying, not only about the dramatic texts but also about ourselves.

Book excerpt: A series of limiting definitions have tended to delineate the Franco-British cinematic relationship. As this collection of essays reveals, there is much more to it than simple oppositions between British critical esteem for the films of France and French dismissal of ‘le cinéma British’, or the success of Ken Loach et al. at the French box office and the relative dearth of French movies on British screens. In fact, there has long been a rich and productive dialogue between these two cultures in which both their clear differences and their shared concerns have played a vital role. This book provides an overview of the history of these relations from the early days of sound cinema to the present day. The chapters, written by leading experts in the history of French, British and European cinema, provide insights into relations between French and British cinematic cultures at the level of production, exhibition and distribution, reception, representation and personnel. The book features a diverse range of studies, including: the exhibition of French cinema in Britain in the 1930s, contemporary ‘extreme’ French cinema, stars such as Annabella, David Niven and Jane Birkin and the French Resistance on British screens.

Download or read book The San Diego World s Fairs and Southwestern Memory 1880 1940 written by Matthew F. Bokovoy and published by UNM Press. This book was released on 2005-11-01 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the American Southwest, no two events shaped modern Spanish heritage more profoundly than the San Diego Expositions of 1915-16 and 1935-36. Both San Diego fairs displayed a portrait of the Southwest and its peoples for the American public. The Panama-California Exposition of 1915-16 celebrated Southwestern pluralism and gave rise to future promotional events including the Long Beach Pacific Southwest Exposition of 1928, the Santa Fe Fiesta of the 1920s, and John Steven McGroarty's The Mission Play. The California-Pacific International Exposition of 1935-36 promoted the Pacific Slope and the consumer-oriented society in the making during the 1930s. These San Diego fairs distributed national images of southern California and the Southwest unsurpassed in the early twentieth century. By examining architecture and landscape, American Indian shows, civic pageants, tourist imagery, and the production of history for celebration and exhibition at each fair, Matthew Bokovoy peels back the rhetoric of romance and reveals the legacies of the San Diego World's Fairs to reimagine the Indian and Hispanic Southwest. In tracing how the two fairs reflected civic conflict over an invented San Diego culture, Bokovoy explains the emergence of a myth in which the city embraced and incorporated native peoples, Hispanics, and Anglo settlers to benefit its modern development.

Download or read book Of Comics and Men written by Jean-Paul Gabilliet and published by Univ. Press of Mississippi. This book was released on 2013-03-25 with total page 571 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in France and long sought in English translation, Jean-Paul Gabilliet's Of Comics and Men: A Cultural History of American Comic Books documents the rise and development of the American comic book industry from the 1930s to the present. The book intertwines aesthetic issues and critical biographies with the concerns of production, distribution, and audience reception, making it one of the few interdisciplinary studies of the art form. A thorough introduction by translators and comics scholars Bart Beaty and Nick Nguyen brings the book up to date with explorations of the latest innovations, particularly the graphic novel. The book is organized into three sections: a concise history of the evolution of the comic book form in America; an overview of the distribution and consumption of American comic books, detailing specific controversies such as the creation of the Comics Code in the mid-1950s; and the problematic legitimization of the form that has occurred recently within the academy and in popular discourse. Viewing comic books from a variety of theoretical lenses, Gabilliet shows how seemingly disparate issues—creation, production, and reception—are in fact connected in ways that are not necessarily true of other art forms. Analyzing examples from a variety of genres, this book provides a thorough landmark overview of American comic books that sheds new light on this versatile art form.
Download or read book Shakespeare on screen Television Shakespeare written by Nathalie Vienne-Guerrin and published by Presses universitaires de Rouen et du Havre. This book was released on with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
