Book excerpt: A fishing village that started its life as Fort Johnston, the town changed its name to Smithville, and then Southport, as it is known today, read the town's long and watery history. Southport is a small seaside village whose rich history began as early as 1754, when Fort Johnston was built. In 1792, it was incorporated as the town of Smithville, but in 1887, with their busy fishing village growing, the citizens decided to rename it Southport in hopes it would bring a port to their town. Much to their disappointment, however, the port was located in Wilmington. In 1954, Hurricane Hazel made landfall, and the storm surge delivered to Southport was the greatest in North Carolina's recorded history. Like most seaside villages, Southport recovered and is listed in the National Register of Historic Places today. Observing Independence Day since 1795, Southport annually hosts the official North Carolina Fourth of July celebration.

Download or read book Southport Oak Island and Bald Head Island written by Daniel Fink and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2014 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Southport, Oak Island, and Bald Head Island are coastal North Carolina communities. History abounds in this area, settled by the Smith brothers in the late 1700s. A century later, Fort Caswell was built on Oak Island and used for Confederate defense. Two of North Carolina's historic lighthouses grace the beaches of the area. "Old Baldy" was built in 1817 in a unique octagonal shape. On Oak Island, the lighthouse is modern yet beautiful; it was completed in 1958. River steamer routes flowed through here until 1925, exporting and importing goods at the Wilmington port. Today, the area is a popular destination for tourists who enjoy the plentiful live oaks, fishing, the waterfront park of Southport, and the North Carolina Maritime Museum. Southport, Oak Island, and Bald Head Island showcases the rich military and recreational history of these coastal towns.

Book Redcoats on the Cape Fear

Download or read book Redcoats on the Cape Fear written by Robert M. Dunkerly and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2014-01-10 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nestled on the banks of the Cape Fear River, Wilmington, North Carolina, remains famous as a blockade-running port during the Civil War. Not as renowned is the city's equally vital role during the Revolution. Through the port came news, essential supplies, and critical materials for the Continental Army. Both sides contended for the city and both sides occupied it at different times. Its merchant-based economy created a hotbed of dissension over issues of trade and taxes before the Revolution, and the presence of numerous Loyalists among Whigs vying for independence generated considerable tension among civilians. Based on more than 100 eyewitness accounts and other primary sources, this volume chronicles the fascinating story of Wilmington and the Lower Cape Fear during the Revolution.

Book excerpt: This biography is about one of North Carolina's early governors, an advocate for public education in the post-Colonial period. Benjamin Smith (1757-1826) came from a distinguished South Carolina family and acquired enormous wealth in the Cape Fear region as a member of the planter class. Like his elite white peers, Smith was active in public life, in county government and as a legislator in state politics. He promoted public schools, the University of North Carolina, domestic manufacturing, banking, penal reform, and internal improvements. Earning the nickname "General" because of his militia activities, he rose to governorship but ended up dying in poverty.
