Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Southern Campus, 1935 There IS a certain sort of fun in pitting mental skill against a knotty problem in mathematics or philosophy; but there is a different sort of pleasure, a happiness that is really an art - the art of enjoying life and the people about one. This art of happiness is a valuable asset in one's per sonal life; moreover, it is well worth definite study in these days when social relationships within human society are being recognized as constituting one of our most serious problems. Perhaps recreation will be one of the most helpful keys to its solution. Recreation contributes to society's needs in forms to match those needs. Students, for example, are - presumably - engaged primarily in intellectual pursuits, and the strain therefore falls mainly on the nervous rather than the muscu lar mechanism. Active physical effort is thus indicated as an essential of their recreation programs. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Indian Classical Music and the Gramophone 1900 1930

Download or read book Indian Classical Music and the Gramophone 1900 1930 written by Vikram Sampath and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-06-30 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1902 The Gramophone Company in London sent out recording experts on "expeditions" across the world to record voices from different cultures and backgrounds. All over India, it was women who embraced the challenge of overcoming numerous social taboos and aesthetic handicaps that came along with this nascent technology. Women who took the plunge and recorded largely belonged to the courtesan community, called tawaifs and devadasis, in North and South India, respectively. Recording brought with it great fame, brand recognition, freedom from exploitative patrons, and monetary benefits to the women singers. They were to become pioneers of the music industry in the Indian sub-continent. However, despite the pioneering role played by these women, their stories have largely been forgotten. Contemporaneous with the courtesan women adapting to recording technology was the anti-nautch campaign that sought to abolish these women from the performing space and brand them as common prostitutes. A vigorous renaissance and arts revival movement followed, leading to the creation of a new classical paradigm in both North Indian (Hindustani) and South Indian (Carnatic) classical music. This resulted in the standardization, universalization, and institutionalization of Indian classical music. This newly created classical paradigm impacted future recordings of The Gramophone Company in terms of a shift in genres and styles. Vikram Sampath sheds light on the role and impact of The Gramophone Company’s early recording expeditions on Indian classical music by examining the phenomenon through a sociocultural, historical and musical lens. The book features the indefatigable stories of the women and their experiences in adapting to recording technology. The artists from across India featured are: Gauhar Jaan of Calcutta, Janki Bai of Allahabad, Zohra Bai of Agra, Malka Jaan of Agra, Salem Godavari, Bangalore Nagarathnamma, Coimbatore Thayi, Dhanakoti of Kanchipuram, Bai Sundarabai of Pune, and Husna Jaan of Banaras.

Book Remaking Dixie

    Book Details:
  • Author : Neil R. McMillen
  • Publisher : Univ. Press of Mississippi
  • Release : 1997
  • ISBN : 0878059288
  • Pages : 229 pages

Download or read book Remaking Dixie written by Neil R. McMillen and published by Univ. Press of Mississippi. This book was released on 1997 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although the Civil War reconfigured Dixie, in the half century since the end of World War II the American South has been massively changed again. It is still an improbable mix of tradition and transition, but the stereotype of a region with one party politics, one crop agriculture, white supremacy, cultural insularity, grinding poverty , somnolent cotton towns, and languorous rural landscapes has largely passed into history. Possum Trot and Tobacco Road have been suburbanized and how have Walmarts. As the regions's boosters insist, the "nations's number0one economic problem" has joined the great, booming sunbelt. For good or for ill, a new sense has been visited upon nearly every southern place. What elements caused such striking change to the face of Dixie? In this volume, nine widely known specialists in the history and literature of the American South search for the origins of this sweeping regional transformation in the period of the Second World War. These original essays address a cluster of related problems of enduring fascination for all those who wish to understand the ever-changing, ever-abiding South. Offering new answers to important questions, they address the Second World War as a major watershed in southern history. Did it drive old Dixie down? Did it set in motion forces that ultimately shaped a Newer South? Did it further Americanize the South by eroding traditional patterns of though and deed that once were fiercely defended by white southerners as "our way of life"? Was the postwar South less different, less peculiar and distinctive?
