Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: South of the Border, West of the Sun is the beguiling story of a past rekindled, and one of Haruki Murakami’s most touching novels. Hajime has arrived at middle age with a loving family and an enviable career, yet he feels incomplete. When a childhood friend, now a beautiful woman, shows up with a secret from which she is unable to escape, the fault lines of doubt in Hajime’s quotidian existence begin to give way. Rich, mysterious, and quietly dazzling, in South of the Border, West of the Sun the simple arc of one man’s life becomes the exquisite literary terrain of Murakami’s remarkable genius.

Download or read book Yiddish South of the Border written by Alan Astro and published by University of New Mexico Press. This book was released on 2021-10 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alan Astro's pioneering collection of Latin American Yiddish writings translated into English includes works of fiction, poetry, and nonfiction from Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Mexico, Uruguay, Colombia, and Cuba. Literature has always served as a refuge for Yiddish speakers, and the Yiddish literature of Latin America reflects the writers' assertions of their political rights. Stories depicting working-class life in Buenos Aires by José Rabinovich and Samuel Rollansky evoke the works of Abraham Cahan and Henry Roth. Rosa Palatnik in Rio de Janeiro, Abraham Weisbaum in Mexico City, José Goldchain in Santiago de Chile, and Salomón Zytner in Montevideo satirize bourgeois aspirations among Jews distancing themselves from their modest backgrounds--one of Philip Roth's major themes. Abraham Josef Dubelman and Aaron Zeitlin in Cuba ponder possible links to the crypto-Jews who came to the New World to escape the Inquisition. Themes of identity permeate Latin American Yiddish writing, and the works featured in this anthology provide a glimpse into Jewish life and culture throughout Latin America. As Ilan Stavans notes in the introduction, "This anthology documents that Yiddish--or, in one of its Spanish spellings, idish--also flourished in Latin America, leaving behind powerfully artistic testaments."

Book excerpt: Change the world one trip at a time. In this illuminating collection of stories and lessons from the road, acclaimed travel writer Rick Steves shares a powerful message that resonates now more than ever. With the world facing divisive and often frightening events, from Trump, Brexit, and Erdogan, to climate change, nativism, and populism, there's never been a more important time to travel. Rick believes the risks of travel are widely exaggerated, and that fear is for people who don't get out much. After years of living out of a suitcase, he still marvels at how different cultures find different truths to be self-evident. By sharing his experiences from Europe, Central America, Asia, and the Middle East, Rick shows how we can learn more about own country by viewing it from afar. With gripping stories from Rick's decades of exploration, this fully revised edition of Travel as a Political Act is an antidote to the current climate of xenophobia. When we travel thoughtfully, we bring back the most beautiful souvenir of all: a broader perspective on the world that we all call home. All royalties from the sale of Travel as a Political Act are donated to support the work of Bread for the World, a non-partisan organization working to end hunger at home and abroad.
Download or read book Water Monsters South of the Border written by Denver Michaels and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2016-09-10 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In his first book, Denver Michaels examined the lake monster phenomenon in the United States and Canada. In this book, Michaels takes us on a trip "South of the Border" to study the myths, legends, folklore, and eyewitness reports of water monsters in Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central & South America. What parallels can be drawn between the creatures found "South of the Border" and their Canadian and American counterparts? What are we to make of the Mermaid legends of South America? Could there be dinosaurs roaming the remote reaches of the Amazon? What are "water tigers?" Is the "giant anaconda" a mythical creature, or does it actually exist? Though many creatures that were feared by native people centuries ago seem to be mythical, what are the ancient myths and legends trying to tell us? Could some of these creatures be based on something that lived in the remote past? Michaels explores these questions and many others in his work. However, some of the answers may be disturbing... ***Listed among Loren Coleman's Top 10 Cryptozoology Books of 2016*** http: //www.cryptozoonews.com/czbksof16/

In addition, this work attends directly to community agitation and protest against racist school policies. The book begins with post-Civil War schooling of Black children to the important Liddell case that declared unconstitutional the St. Louis Public Schools. The judicial wrangling in the Liddell case, its aftermath, and community reaction against it awaits a next book by the authors of Anti-blackness and public schools.
Download or read book Buses in the Border Towns of London Country 1969 2019 South of the Thames written by Malcolm Batten and published by Pen and Sword Transport. This book was released on 2024-03-30 with total page 211 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: London Transport was created in 1933 with monopoly powers. Not only did it have exclusive rights to run bus (and tram and trolleybus) services in the Greater London area, it also ran services in a Country Area all around London. Green Line express services linked the country towns to London and in most cases across to other country towns the other side of the metropolis. This country area extended north as far as Hitchin, east to Brentwood, south to Crawley and west to Windsor. But what of the towns at the edge of the country area? Here the green London Transport buses would meet the bus companies whose operations extended across the rest of the counties of Berkshire, Surrey, Kent etc. In some cases the town was at a node where more than one company worked in. Elsewhere, such as at Guildford there were local independent operators who had a share in the town services. It would all change from 1970 when the London Transport Country Area was transferred to the National Bus Company to form a new company named London Country Bus Services. This would later be split into four separate companies. Deregulation in 1985 and privatisation in the 1990s led to further changes in the names and ownership of bus companies. Consolidation since then has seen the emergence of national bus groups – Stagecoach, First Group, Arriva and Go-Ahead replacing the old names and liveries. But retrenchment by these companies has given an opportunity for new independent companies to fill the gaps. This book takes the form of an anti-clockwise tour around the perimeter of the London Country area, south of the Thames featuring a number of key towns starting at Slough and Windsor and ending at Gravesend, illustrating some of the many changes to bus companies that have occurred.
