Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A vivid biography of the nineteenth-century society couple who helped turn a tropical wilderness into a Gilded Age paradise. Palm Beach’s sunny and idyllic shores had humble beginnings as a wilderness of sawgrass and swamps only braved by the hardiest of souls. Two such adventurers were Fred and Byrd “Birdie” Spilman Dewey, who pioneered in central Florida before discovering the tropical beauty of Palm Beach in 1887. Though their story was all but lost, this dynamic couple was vital in transforming the region from a rough backcountry into a paradise poised for progress. Authors Ginger Pedersen and Janet DeVries trace the remarkable history of the Deweys in South Florida from their beginnings on the isolated frontier to entertaining the likes of the Flaglers, Vanderbilts, Phippses, Cluetts, Clarkes, and other Palm Beach elite. Using Birdie’s autobiographical writings from her bestselling books to fill in the gaps, Pedersen and DeVries narrate a chapter in Florida’s history that has remained untold until now.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Known for its year-round warmth, beautiful beaches and famous residents, Palm Beach County is one of the most well-known areas along Florida's Atlantic coast. And although many people know the county as a winter destination for the likes of starlets and snowbirds, few know that German U-boats sank sixteen ships off the coast in 1942. Nor do they know that eleven "barefoot mailmen" originally took on the mail service between Palm Beach and Miami. In Palm Beach Past: The Best of "Post Time," author and local journalist Eliot Kleinberg has compiled a collection of historical vignettes--which originally appeared in the Palm Beach Post--about the intriguing people and events in the county's history. Kleinberg reveals little-known facts about the development of the region's prestigious neighborhoods and parks, while introducing readers to some of the most captivating and eccentric characters. For readers who want to understand the Palm Beach County of today or those who enjoy local history and just want a "good read," Palm Beach Past is a must.

Book excerpt: During the 2009 to 2010 annual year, Florida's long-term care ombudsmen investigated and resolved 9,098 complaints; more than in any other year in the program's 35-year history. That's why I call them "angels in training."What exactly is an ombudsman? A long-term care ombudsman is an advocate for residents in nursing homes, assisted living facilities and adult family care homes. Why do we need ombudsmen? Because it's human nature to take the easy way out and the powerful can take advantage of the weak. And as one elderly female resident said, "I have been placed in a prison and my only crime was that I got old." Residents have the right to be safe and to be treated with dignity and respect. Ombudsmen are there to make sure these rights are enforced. There is only one problem. Florida's Long-Term Care Ombudsman Program is the "best kept secret" in the state.I started writing poetry as a young girl. I didn't know at the time it was a gift from God. Even though I attended church weekly I can't say that God was a big part of my life. He just didn't feel that close to me. Why would I expect a gift from someone I didn't know? But God knew me. His plan for my life included writing poetry back then and this book now. After some major life-changing events in my thirties I sought out God. I found Him at forty but this time I desired a relationship. Now, the Holy Spirit fills me with the words to say when I write poetry, skits or books. Today, I accept God's gifts freely and use them to honor Him. Writing has given me a voice to say what my shyness prevented me from saying out loud. Thank you for listening.
