The book develops a framework for planning and implementing DNAPL site characterization activities. It provides detailed methods to identify, characterize, and monitor sites and analyzes their utility, limitations, risks, availability, and cost. Methods to interpret contaminant fate and transport are identified, and new site characterization methods are assessed. DNAPL Site Evaluation will maximize the cost-effectiveness of site investigation/remediation by providing the best information available to describe and evaluate methods to be used for determining the presence, fate, and transport of subsurface DNAPL contamination. The book will be a useful reference for groundwater professionals and environmental regulatory personnel.

Book Standards for Success

Book excerpt: With the proven track record of GIS in providing high returns on investment, Standards for Success shows how federal government agencies are using this powerful technology to streamline business processes, foster collaboration and communication, provide sound decision support, and optimize resource management. GIS plays an central role in making government work more effectively and more efficiently, and the powerful examples in Standards for Success make it easy to understand why. Standards for Success presents a rich array of case studies describing how GIS is helping federal agencies achieve their goals. The U.S. Department of Agriculture, U.S. Geological Survey, the Air Force, and the Navy use GIS to consolidate time-consuming steps into simple automated tools, freeing personnel from complex and repetitive processes and allowing them to concentrate on creative solutions. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, U.S. Department of Education, and the Los Alamos National Laboratory have embraced GIS as a tool for fostering teamwork and building necessary, lasting relationships. At the U.S. Bureau of Land Management and the Environmental Protection Agency, GIS provides indispensable decision support by enabling staff to assemble and process data from disparate sources, illustrate workflows, model dynamic natural and man-made events, and easily recognize changing situations by visualizing long-term effects of actions. The implementation of GIS for efficient resource management at NASA and the U.S. Forest Service has helped maximize investments, control inventories, and avoid costs.

  • Publisher : University of Chicago Press

Download or read book A Good Reputation written by Elizabeth Korver-Glenn and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2024-05-28 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A historic Houston barrio provides an illuminating lens on neighborhood reputation. Neighborhoods have the power to form significant parts of our worlds and identities. A neighborhood’s reputation, however, doesn’t always match up to how residents see themselves or wish to be seen. The distance between residents’ desires and their environment can profoundly shape neighborhood life. In A Good Reputation, sociologists Elizabeth Korver-Glenn and Sarah Mayorga delve into the development and transformation of the reputation of Northside, a predominantly Latinx barrio in Houston. Drawing on two years of ethnographic research and in-depth interviews with residents, developers, and other neighborhood stakeholders, the authors show that people’s perceptions of their neighborhoods are essential to understanding urban inequality and poverty. Korver-Glenn and Mayorga’s empirically detailed account of disputes over neighborhood reputation helps readers understand the complexity of high-poverty urban neighborhoods, demonstrating that gentrification is a more complicated and irregular process than existing accounts of urban inequality would suggest. Offering insightful theoretical analysis and compelling narrative threads from understudied communities, A Good Reputation will yield insights for scholars of race and ethnicity, urban planning, and beyond.
