Scientists also predict that if nothing is done to curb the effects of climate change, in Europe the death toll due to weather disasters could rise 50-fold by the end of the 21st century, with extreme heat alone causing more than 150,000 deaths a year, as the report on global warming of 1.5°C warns that China, Russia and Canada’s current climate policies would steer the world above a catastrophic 5°C of warming by the end of 2100. As such, the book highlights how the wellbeing of different populations is threatened by extreme events now and in the foreseeable future.

The increasing frequency of extreme weather events such as floods, droughts, and heatwaves, and the direct impacts of changes in temperature have direct impacts on health. At the same time, broader environmental change affects infectious disease risk, air pollution, and other forms of exposure. The different ways in which climate change will affect health are complex, interactive, and different communities are disproportionately affected. International actions such as the Paris Agreement and the Sustainable Development Goals recognise the future risks to society and acknowledge that we are already committed to a certain level of climate change. Future adaptation measures therefore need careful assessment and implementation for us to be able to minimise the potential risks from climate change and, at the same time, maximise the potential health benefits of a cleaner, greener world. This Special Issue comprises original research articles and detailed reviews on the likely impacts of climate change on health in a range of geographical settings, and the potential for adaptation measures to reduce some of these risks. Ultimately, studies like these will motivate policy level action for mitigation and help in determining the most effective methods of adaptation to reduce negative impacts in future through embedding scientific evidence into practice.

Book excerpt: There are a number of books in the market about wind energy, turbine controllers, modelling and different aspects of integration of Wind Farm Power Plants ( WPP) to grids. But none of these books meets the expectations of design and field engineers/technicians to address directly the setting and design philosophy of different Intelligent Electronic Devices (IED) of WPP networks. This book provides practical applications of numerical relays for protection and control of different parts of onshore & offshore WPP network namely wind turbine generator, collector feeder and EHV interconnection transmission line to grid. In addition required changes to existing special protection system (SPS) and run-back scheme by adding a new WPP are discussed. The topology and characteristics of WPP networks are different from convectional one for both onshore and offshore WPP. In addition the fault current contribution from wind farm generators are low (1.1-1.2 pu). These causes significant challenge for setting and design of IEDs of WPP in order to meet the common industry practice requirement with respect to reliability, sensitivity, stability, security and grading coordination. The author believes that this book may be unique with respect to addressing these challenges and provision of the mitigation techniques to rectify the deficiencies of existing industry practice which otherwise have not been discussed for real systems in any other book. The content of this book have been successfully applied in the field for various WPPs projects and consequently can be used as a practical guideline for implementation for future projects.
