Download or read book Community based Natural Resource Management written by Ajit Menon and published by SAGE Publications Pvt. Limited. This book was released on 2007-09-10 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: NGOs today, as part of civil society, have come to play a prominent role in South Asia in the context of community-based natural resource management (CBNRM). This book examines the theory and practice of NGO-driven CBNRM within the framework of emerging critiques of dominant discourses of development, the micro-politics of decentralization, and the projection of community development. The book breaks new ground by situating these critiques within six detailed cases of CBNRM initiatives.

Book Community Based Natural Resource Management in Southern Africa

Download or read book Community Based Natural Resource Management in Southern Africa written by Charles Breen and published by . This book was released on 2013-06-05 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Community-based natural resource management (CBNRM) is a compelling concept - if people are allowed to be custodians of their resources, better management of the resources will result. CBNRM is much more complex and challenging than has commonly been understood, but can provide a way to achieve a more equitable and sustainable approach to the use of natural resources. This book has a focus on Southern Africa. Part I consists of ten chapters. After introducing the CBNRM concept, consideration is given to the following: History as a Determinant of Progress; Economic Foundations; Well-Being, Livelihoods and Business; Institutions and Governance; Stakeholder Analysis; Adaptive Management; Capacity Development and Learning; and Communication for Effective Implementation. Part II is devoted to eight case studies from the Southern Africa region that illustrates some of the issues considered in Part I. They are included to provide material that can be used as site-specific examples and teaching aids to complement general discussion of the issues -- page 4 of cover.

Book Social Networks and Natural Resource Management

Download or read book Social Networks and Natural Resource Management written by Örjan Bodin and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2011-08-04 with total page 391 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Social Network Analysis (SNA), a quantitative approach to the study of social relations, has recently emerged as a key tool for understanding the governance of natural resources. Bringing together contributions from a range of researchers in the field, this is the first book to fully explore the potential applications of SNA in the context of natural resource management. Topics covered include the role of SNA in stakeholder selection; improving fisheries management and conservation; the effect of social network ties on public satisfaction and agrarian communication networks. Numerous case studies link SNA concepts to the theories underlying natural resource governance, such as social learning, adaptive co-management and social movements theory. Reflecting on the challenges and opportunities associated with this evolving field, this is an ideal resource for students and researchers involved in many areas of natural resource management, environmental biology, sustainability science and sociology.

Book Community based management of freshwater resources A practitioners guide to applying TNC s Voice Choice and Action framework

Download or read book Community based management of freshwater resources A practitioners guide to applying TNC s Voice Choice and Action framework written by Zhang, Wei and published by Intl Food Policy Res Inst. This book was released on 2020-04-20 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite being one of the most critical resources for all life on Earth, freshwater represents only 3 percent of the planet’s water supply, but only 0.5 percent is readily accessible to humans. In addition, the available freshwater resources (FWR) are unequally distributed across the globe, so many areas and populations face issues of water scarcity and quality. FWR are under enormous stress from agricultural systems, climate change, and other factors directly linked to human behavior—including population growth and industrialization. Moreover, the institutions intended to manage FWR under stress may be ill-equipped to do so, especially in the context of multiple, often competing claims on FWR and the complexity of water flows across time and space. Growing awareness of these challenges has given rise to a sense of urgency to raise attention and catalyze action toward improving the management of FWR, especially at the local level. This guide aims to advance the understanding of how communities can sustainably manage FWR by applying The Nature Conservancy’s Voice, Choice, and Action (VCA) framework. The original framework focused more on terrestrial resources but has been adapted here to address the unique characteristics of FWR. These characteristics present significant implications for sustainable resource management and, therefore, need to be taken into account in the design and implementation of community-based conservation (CBC) programs.

Book Developing Capacity for Community Governance of Natural Resources Theory Practice

Download or read book Developing Capacity for Community Governance of Natural Resources Theory Practice written by Brian Child and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2014-05-19 with total page 237 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Community-based natural resource management (CBNRM) is a compelling concept that combines community custodianship of natural resources with sustainable development and poverty reduction. However, there is a large gap between the conceptual promise and actual performance of CBNRM. CBNRM is complex and challenging, and one of the major challenges is what we call micro-governancehow to replace the ubiquitous problem of elite capture within communities with genuine participation and equitable benefit sharing. This book is for people want to understand and implement CBNRM governance more effectively, including graduate students, scholars and practitioners. It is targeted most specifically at the scholar-practitioner who wants to draw upon micro-governance theory to know why and how to work with communities to implement sound local institutions. The perspectives and resources presented have been developed and tested over many years working with CBNRM communities in southern Africa. The book offers convincing evidence for preferring participatory democracy over representational forms of governance, and discusses how to manage the scale paradox that economies and ecologies are better managed at larger scales, but that larger representational institutions invariably forfeit critical public goods like participation and equitable benefit sharing. The books purpose is to provide the reader with the practical tools to operationalize good governance at the village level, in ways that are theoretically sound. It provides the reader with theoretical insights and practical lessons about micro-governance in the context of CBNRM, tools for designing and implementing conceptually rigorous community constitutions that enable communities to govern themselves fairly and effectively, and resources for developing the management and monitoring systems necessary to protect these conditions.

Book Community based Control of Invasive Species

Download or read book Community based Control of Invasive Species written by Theodore Alter and published by CSIRO PUBLISHING. This book was released on 2019-06-01 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Invasive species are among the greatest challenges to environmental sustainability and agricultural productivity in the world. One of the most promising approaches to managing invasive species is voluntary citizen stewardship. However, in order for control measures to be effective, private citizens often need to make sustained and sometimes burdensome commitments. Community-Based Control of Invasive Species is based on five years of research by leading scholars in natural resource and human behavioural sciences, which involved government and citizen groups in Australia and the United States. It examines questions including, 'how can citizens be engaged in voluntarily managing invasive species?', 'what communication strategies will ensure good motivation and coordination?' and 'how can governing bodies support citizens in their efforts?'. With chapters on institutional frameworks, changing governance, systems thinking, organisational learning, engagement, communication and behavioural change, this book will be a valuable reference for researchers and practitioners involved in natural resources management.
