Book Sounds from Implosions of Steel Cylinders Under Water

Download or read book Sounds from Implosions of Steel Cylinders Under Water written by Robert S. Price and published by . This book was released on 1974 with total page 29 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pressure pulses from steel cylindrical tanks imploding under hydrostatic pressure in the ocean are described. Several tanks were recovered after collapse for inspection so that the mode of collapse and resulting damage to the tanks could be correlated with the acoustic measurements. The imploding steel tanks generated acoustic signatures that differed significantly from those produced by underwater explosions and from those produced by underwater implosions of glass bottles. The observed negative onset of the implosion signatures from the steel tanks was apparently caused by the formation of an inward buckle.

Book Dynamic Response and Failure of Composite Materials and Structures

Download or read book Dynamic Response and Failure of Composite Materials and Structures written by Valentina Lopresto and published by Woodhead Publishing. This book was released on 2017-05-17 with total page 438 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dynamic Response and Failure of Composite Materials and Structures presents an overview of recent developments in a specialized area of research with original contributions from the authors who have been asked to outline needs for further investigations in their chosen topic area. The result is a presentation of the current state-of-the art in very specialized research areas that cannot be found elsewhere in the literature. For example, Massabò presents a newly developed theory for laminated composite plates that accounts for imperfect bonding between layers with new solutions for problems involving thermal effects. This theory is new and computationally-efficient, and the author describes how it fits in the broader context of composite plate theory. Abrate discusses the design of composite marine propellers and presents a detailed derivation of the equations of motion of a rotating blade, including centrifugal effects and the effects of pre-twisting and other geometric parameters. This book is a major reference resource for academic and industrial researchers and designers working in aerospace, automotives, and the marine engineering industry. Presents recent developments in a research field that has experienced tremendous advances because of improved computational capabilities, new materials, and new testing facilities Includes contributions from leading researchers from Europe and the USA who present the current state-of-the-art, including unique and original research Provides extensive experimental results and numerical solutions Appeals to a broad range of professional researchers working in aerospace, automotive, and marine engineering fields

Download or read book Run Silent Run Deep written by Edward L. Beach and published by Naval Institute Press. This book was released on 2016-10-15 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Universally praised for its powerfully authentic depiction of submarine warfare, Run Silent, Run Deep was an immediate success when published in 1955 and shot to the top of best-seller lists nationwide. In 1958, Hollywood adapted the novel for the big screen starring Clark Gable and Burt Lancaster. The New York Timessaid of the novel, “If ever a book had a ring of reality, this is it . . . combat passages rank with the most exciting written about any branch of the service.” The Saturday Review called the book “a classic,” and many reviewers compared its author to such greats as C. S. Forester and Erich Remarque. Today these accolades still ring true for Edward L. Beach’s gripping first novel of American submariners confronting a formidable Japanese navy in a vicious battle to control the Pacific. Beach’s taut and dramatic narrative, told with the intimacy of a confession, deals with two strong-headed men, Edward Richardson, the commander of the USS Walrus, and his executive officer, Jim Bledsoe. Bound together by wartime duty, the two are divided by jealousy, pride, and love for a beautiful woman. But long after the details of this famous novel fade from memory, what remains with us is a startling realization of the way it was, really was, in the silent service during World War II. Unlike many war novels, here is a story that deals with war from the perspective of command. With fidelity, Beach creates the anguish, agony, and triumphs of command decisions. Commander Richardson embodies all that is fine and human in an excellent naval officer. This is a monument, not to the misfits and the mistakes, but to those men who rose to greatness under the sometimes unbearable tensions of action.
