Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing on a wide context of bookmaking, this sweeping study traces fundamental changes in books made to support musical practice during the Carolingian Renaissance. During the late eighth and ninth centuries, there were dramatic changes in the way European medieval scribes made books for singers, moving from heavy reliance on unwritten knowledge to the introduction of musical notation into manuscripts. Well-made liturgical books were vital to the success of the Carolingian fight for Christian salvation: these were the basis for carrying out worship correctly, rendering it most effective in petitions to the Christian God. In Sounding the Word of God, Susan Rankin explores Carolingian concern with the expression and control of sound in writing—discernible through instructions for readers and singers visible in liturgical books. Her central focus is on books made for singers, including those made for priests. The emergence of musical notations for ecclesiastical chant and of books designed to accommodate those notations, Rankin concludes, are important aspects of the impact of Carolingian reforming zeal on material culture. The book has three sections. Part 1 considers late antique and early medieval texts, which deal with the value of singing and its necessary regulation. Part 2 describes and investigates techniques used by Carolingian scribes to provide instructions for readers and singers. The extant books themselves are the focus of part 3. Rankin’s analysis of over two hundred manuscripts and extensive supporting images represents the work of a scholar who has spent a lifetime with the sources; her explication of the images, particularly those of the earlier manuscripts, changes the way in which musicologists and liturgical scholars will view the images. Indeed, it will change the way in which they approach the unfolding history of chant and liturgy in the Carolingian period.

Book excerpt: Between 800 and 900 a new convention entered musical practice: by the end of the century the recording of musical sound using newly-invented music scripts had become standard, the meanings of those scripts familiar to many. In the history of European music this was a momentous transformation, offering new possibilities of organization and control. But the change was not accomplished quickly, nor were singers who read from books without musical notations entirely without written guidance. In Sounding the Word of God, those ways in which Carolingian scribes made instructions for readers and singers visible through script, and consequent changes in the material culture represented by books, are explored. From books of the late eighth and early ninth centuries in which chant was codified in a manner that relied heavily on unwritten knowledge, Rankin traces a path to books that attempted to record aspects of the delivery of ecclesiastical chant more thoroughly.

  • Pages : 98 pages

Download or read book Sound Doctrine written by Torben Sondergaard and published by . This book was released on 2013-10 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: According to the Bible, sound doctrine creates true fear of the Lord. If this fear of the Lord is missing in our churches, as it seems to be, it must be a sign that we do not preach the true Word of God and sound doctrine. Teaching sound doctrine should cause us to see a need to surrender everything to God and to live in the light. There is no darkness, no sin, when we are walking in the light ( 1 John 1:7). True godliness and holiness is required to walk with God. In this prophetic word to the Church, Torben brings us back to the Bible where sound doctrine is found, including how to address sin in the church and in the individual. Has the church been teaching sound doctrine? Has it become soft on sin? Can the church expect its prayers to be answered if there is sin in the camp? Is the church accursed because it has allowed sin to thrive unchallenged? Can a person truly be born again and continue in conscious sin? Have we been teaching a grace that tramples the blood of Jesus? These are serious questions that must be addressed if we expect God to hear our prayers. His word to the church: REPENT!

Book Preaching as the Word of God

Download or read book Preaching as the Word of God written by Sam Chan and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2016-07-12 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: According to the Reformers, preaching is the word of God. As the word of God, preaching is a foundation for the church. It is also vital for the personal growth of a Christian. But Christians are poorly equipped to understand how preaching is the word of God. Some Christians look for preaching that closely reproduces the text in the Bible. Other Christians look for preaching that creates maximal emotional and existential impact. And there is a lot of name-calling with Christians accusing preachers of "not preaching the word." But what type of preaching is the word of God? The purpose of this book is to equip Christians to understand how preaching can be God speaking. It accomplishes this with a survey of the problem in the history of the church, a detailed overview of key biblical texts, and finally the application of the contemporary philosophical tool of speech act theory.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ¿The Sound Of The Word¿ Of God is based on an encounter Shicreta had with God in 2003. During her encounter, she gained a greater understanding of God¿s loving heart towards His people. In the wake of religious scandals and broken trust between those that sit on the pew and those that stand on religious platforms, this book has come along to help restore a clear distention between God and man made religion. ¿The Sound Of The Word Of God¿, by Shicreta Murray, is intended to bring explanations for the extreme hypocrisy, unbearable attitudes, and prideful behaviors from some of those that profess to know the God of the Bible. This book is sent, like the 99 Thesis of Martin Luther, to challenge the evident false perceptions and descriptions of God that are plaguing many organized religions today. Shicreta will take the readers on a transparent journey of her life, within the walls of organized religion; this journey will attest to the fact that many of God¿s people have forgotten their God given identity. ¿The Sound Of The Word Of God¿ will take you on a revolutionary journey through the Bible that will prove that the loving heart of God is no longer the focus of some of America¿s most popular churches.
