This one's going to give you pause to reflect, and a second to smile with time left over for a tear. Sounding Taps is a lone bugler's journey in the Duty of Remembrance, each chapter a singular memory of an unheralded hero who could have been laid to rest by the soldiers of the Old Guard at Arlington National Cemetery. One is. The others rest in peace in small-town cemeteries and forgotten country graveyards, their stories untold. For some, the sweet sound of the author's bugle was the first time since the Civil War the refrain of Taps was sounded for their angels. For hundreds of others, it was simply the first time. And the first time this author let the bugle recall its rightful place was the time he realized being a lone bugler was never lonely. Sounding Taps is not just a moving tribute to the memory of our fallen servicemen and women. It's also a salute to those who wear the honor guard tab, on duty with the military funeral honors detail.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume brings together a range of essays by eminent and emergent scholars working at the intersection of modern literary, cinema and sound studies. The individual studies ask what specific sonorous qualities are capable of being registered by different modern media, and how sonic transpositions and transferences across media affect the ways in which human subjects attend to modern soundscapes. Script, groove, electrical current, magnetic imprint, phonographic vibration: as the contributors show, sound traverses these and other material platforms to become an insistent ground-note of modern aesthetics, one not yet adequately integrated into critical accounts of the period. This collection also provides a commanding and wide-ranging investigation of the conditions under which modernists tapped technically into the rhythms, echoes and sonic architectures of their worlds.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Segregating Sound, Karl Hagstrom Miller argues that the categories that we have inherited to think and talk about southern music bear little relation to the ways that southerners long played and heard music. Focusing on the late nineteenth century and the early twentieth, Miller chronicles how southern music—a fluid complex of sounds and styles in practice—was reduced to a series of distinct genres linked to particular racial and ethnic identities. The blues were African American. Rural white southerners played country music. By the 1920s, these depictions were touted in folk song collections and the catalogs of “race” and “hillbilly” records produced by the phonograph industry. Such links among race, region, and music were new. Black and white artists alike had played not only blues, ballads, ragtime, and string band music, but also nationally popular sentimental ballads, minstrel songs, Tin Pan Alley tunes, and Broadway hits. In a cultural history filled with musicians, listeners, scholars, and business people, Miller describes how folklore studies and the music industry helped to create a “musical color line,” a cultural parallel to the physical color line that came to define the Jim Crow South. Segregated sound emerged slowly through the interactions of southern and northern musicians, record companies that sought to penetrate new markets across the South and the globe, and academic folklorists who attempted to tap southern music for evidence about the history of human civilization. Contending that people’s musical worlds were defined less by who they were than by the music that they heard, Miller challenges assumptions about the relation of race, music, and the market.
