Book excerpt: “As finely worked as a Swiss watch and as funny as the human condition permits ... the zigzag brilliance of the text as the clunky lines of the farce-within-a-farce rub against the sharp dialogue of reality.” The Guardian A play-within-a-play following a touring theatre company who are rehearsing and performing a comedy called Nothing On, results in a riotous double-bill of comedic craft and dramatic skill. Hurtling along at breakneck speed it shows the backstage antics as they stumble through the dress-rehearsal at Weston-super-Mare, then on to a disastrous matinee at Ashton-under-Lyne, followed by a total meltdown in Stockton-on-Tees. Michael Frayn's irresistible, multi-award-winning backstage farce has been enjoyed by millions of people worldwide since it premiered in 1982 and has been hailed as one of the greatest British comedies ever written. Winner of both Olivier and Evening Standard Awards for Best Comedy. This edition features a new introduction by Michael Blakemore.

Book excerpt: Soundoff is a book about present day political corruption in Washington, D.C. and how Barach Obama, a socialist, is attempting to turn this country into a socialist nation. The people of this country, like the Jews during the holocaust, are being blinded by a charismatic Obama, as Germany was blinded by Hitler. He wants to set up child care for you. He wants to teach your young children. He wants your children to sing praises to him in the schools. He wants the citizens to snitch on each other and has set up websites so this can be done. He wants to set up a national police force answerable to him, separate from the military through the U. S. Marshall Service. He wants to take over the internet. America cannot survive another four years of Barach Obama under a democratic government. He already said our Constitution was in his way of his getting things done. He is already doing everything by Executive Fiat.

Book excerpt: "A fun read that'll have you replaying the songs in your mind and on your stereo." -Chicago Tribune Have you ever listened to a new song and felt as if you'd heard it before? It's not your imagination. Melodies are "borrowed," consciously or subconsciously, more than you might think. For instance, do you know: That U2's "Beautiful Day" shares part of its tune with an a-ha hit from the eighties? Why Huey Lewis was so upset when he first heard Ray Parker Jr.'s "Ghostbusters"? How John Lennon's classic "Imagine" bears an uncanny resemblance to a novelty record cut by his dad? Sounds Like Teen Spirit tells the fascinating true stories behind these and many other "sound-alike" songs. Showcasing well-known artists from the Beatles to Kraftwerk, the Staple Singers to U2, it's a virtual catalog of pop music's "secret history" for casual and hardcore rock-and-roll fans alike. With this entertaining and informative guide, you'll be surprised by the tremendously varied musical influences on your favorite songwriters and performers, and you'll develop a genuine appreciation for what it takes to create a melody that is comfortable and pleasing and yet fresh and original. • Pages : 183 pages

Download or read book Bands of Sisters written by Jill M. Sullivan and published by Scarecrow Press. This book was released on 2011-09-15 with total page 183 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On Saturday, November 14, 1944, radio listeners heard an enthusiastic broadcast announcer describe something they had never heard before: Women singing the "Marines' Hymn" instead of the traditional all-male United States Marine Band. The singers were actually members of its sister organization, The Marine Corps Women's Reserve Band of Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. Today, few remember these all-female military bands because only a small number of their performances were broadcast or pressed to vinyl. But, as Jill Sullivan argues in Bands of Sisters: U.S. Women's Military Bands during World War II, these gaps in the historical record can hardly be treated as the measure of their success. The novelty of these bands—initially employed by the U.S. military to support bond drives—drew enough spectators for the bands to be placed on tour, raising money for the war and boosting morale. The women, once discharged at the war's end, refused to fade into post-war domesticity. Instead, the strong bond fostered by youthful enthusiasm and the rare opportunity to serve in the military while making professional caliber music would come to last some 60 years. Based on interviews with over 70 surviving band members, Bands of Sisters tells the tale of this remarkable period in the history of American women. Sullivan covers the history of these ensembles, tracing accounts such as the female music teachers who would leave their positions to become professional musicians—no easy matter for female instrumentalists of the pre-war era. Sullivan further traces how some band members would later be among the first post-war music therapists based on their experience working with medical personnel in hospitals to treat injured soldiers. The opportunities presented by military service inevitably promoted new perspectives on what women could accomplish outside of the home, resulting in a lifetime of lasting relationships that would inspire future generations of musicians.
