Book excerpt: The Sound of Light is a sweeping overview of the history of gospel music. Powerful and incisive, it traces contemporary Christianity and Christian music to the 16th century and the Protestant Reformation after examining music in the Bible and early church music. From the psalms of the early Puritans through the hymns of human composure of Isaac Watts and the social activism of the Wesleys, gospel music was established in 18th century America. With the camp meeting songs of the Kentucky Revival, the spirituals that came from the slave culture, and the hymns from the great revival after the Civil War, gospel music advanced through the 19th century. The 20th century brought recording technology and electronic media to the table. Gospel music has developed with Christian revivals and the history of American gospel music is the history of Christianity in America. Gospel music reflects the American spirit of freedom and the free market as a Christian culture emerges in the 20th century, providing a spiritual as well as economic foundation. The Sound of Light presents gospel music as part of the history of contemporary Christianity. It is a work broad in scope that defines a music essential to understanding American culture as well as American music in the 20th century. Don Cusic is the author of ten books, including the biography Eddy Arnold: I'll Hold You in My Heart and an encyclopedia of cowboys, Cowboys and the Wild West: An A-Z Guide from the Chisholm Trail to the Silver Screen. Book The Perfect Song

Download or read book The Perfect Song written by Donna J. Bosn & Arthur Lee Crume Sr. and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2010-07-26 with total page 406 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Legends are said to be those individuals who soar above the limitations of the average human experience. These special souls leave eternal footprints in the hearts of even the casual observer, and their message remains timeless. History books are full of stories about these remarkable people. While some of these dynamic leaders affect only their generation, others are birthed for the purposes of eternity. Arthur Lee Crume Sr. is such a man. Arthur is the owner, manager, and longest active member of the widely acclaimed Soul Stirrers’s Gospel Quartet. Historians herald this group as the greatest quartet in the history of gospel music. Arthur’s musical talents catapulted and held him at the top of his field for several decades. Although he enjoyed all the attention and accolades he received, he had one serious problem. Arthur did not have a personal relationship with the God he was singing about. All the notoriety and fame stroked his already inflated ego and caused him to become even more self-absorbed. His poor choices and fleshly appetites scarred the lives of those who loved him the most, leaving broken hearts littered along life’s highway. But God, who is rich in mercy, never gave up on Arthur. Editing by Dixie Phillips and Karen Burkett of ChristianWritingServices.com.

Book Icons of R B and Soul 2 volumes

Download or read book Icons of R B and Soul 2 volumes written by Bob Gulla and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2007-12-30 with total page 571 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawn from a mosaic of influences, including folk, gospel, and blues, R&B represents both everything that came before and nothing that was heard before. This is the music that bridged the gap between audiences and helped, at the very height of racism in America, to dismantle racial barriers. So much of today's music is derived directly from the highly influential and critically important sounds of R&B that without it we would have never known the classic soul of the late '50s and '60s, the glory days of the genre. Similarly, rock n' roll as seen through the eyes of Bill Haley and Elvis Presley would have never evolved without the foundation laid by their R&B predecessors. Through substantial entries on the chief architects and innovators, Icons of R&B and Soul offers a vibrant overview of the music's impact in American culture and how it reflected contemporary society's politics, trends, and social issues. Numerous sidebars highlight Motown, prominent record labels, hit songs, related singers and songwriters, key events, and significant aspects of the music industry. Also included is a list of important print and Web resources, as well as a list of selected recordings. An essential reference for high school and public libraries, this encyclopedia will help students explore the historical and cultural framework of R&B and soul music through the musicians who have come to define the genre. Among the featured: -Ray Charles -Little Richard -Fats Domino & New Orleans R&B -Ruth Brown -Sam Cooke -Etta James -James Brown -Aretha Franklin -The Supremes -Otis Redding -Ike & Tina Turner -Curtis Mayfield -Berry Gordy -Stevie Wonder -Marvin Gaye -Smokey Robinson -The Temptations -Prince

Book ME and SAM

Download or read book ME and SAM written by LeRoy Crume and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2014-03-06 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the story of a skinny little country boy, born in a little community called, Swift, Missouri. Swift wasn’t big enough to be a town. It was just a dusty piece of farm land just off highway 61. That is not even charted on the map anymore. My Dad was a farmer. Not unlike most black men during that time in the south. He earned his living, (that is, if you could call it a living) by the sweat of his brow, plowing up farmland during the fall of the year, and planting come the spring of the year, and then came harvesting time a few months later. That was the ritual for blacks, and a few whites for the rest of their lives. That is, unless they were fortunate like some others, and got a chance to leave that hell hole called a farm. My dad, I’m sure like his father, and grand father before him did the same thing. Walking behind a plow and mules, planting then came the chopping of the cotton and after that came the picking of the cotton. Now that was a life’s ritual from the time you were big enough to walk and talk until you were ready for the grave. What a life. Now the Crume’s were fortunate enough to break that cycle at some point in life .

Book Rock Bottom

    Book Details:
  • Author : Pamela Des Barres
  • Publisher : St. Martin's Press
  • Release : 1996-09-15
  • ISBN : 125001798X
  • Pages : 571 pages

Download or read book Rock Bottom written by Pamela Des Barres and published by St. Martin's Press. This book was released on 1996-09-15 with total page 571 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The dark moments of rock history fascinate and tantalize like the pathos of Greek tragedy. The bottom sinks lower, the air seems colder, the bad endings--when they are bad--seem beyond bad. The unlucky practitioners of our most thriving form of communal experience seem to hit rock bottom in ways only the most glamorous among us can--publicly. The stories remain obscure, half-seen in the shadowlands. In her familiar style, Pamela Des Barres shines light on the people whose art remains the background music to our popular culture. Des Barres asks, "What comes first, the addiction or the rock and roll?" The first apparent rock-and-roll death occured on Christmas Eve in 1959, when Johnny Ace blew his head off in a game of Russian Roulette between shows. Buddy Holly's four-seater plane crashes. Marvin Gaye's father shoots his son. Kurt Cobain puts a gun to his head. The headlines tell it all: ROCK SINGER FACES MANSLAUGHTER CHARGE, JAMES BROWN ADDICTED TO PCP, BASSIST FOR BAND HOLE FOUND DEAD. The messed-up lives, the burned-out golden boys and girls, the violence, the route toward rock bottom--Des Barres has a line on the souls of the public figures who lived desperate private lives to entertain us all.
