Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sophocles, the Plays and Fragments, Vol. 3: With Critical Notes, Commentary, and Translation in English Prose; The Antigone Such a study of the play, as a work of art, stands here in a more than usually intimate relation with that study of language and of detail which it is the secondary office of an interpreter to assist. The poetical texture of the work is, even for Sophocles, remarkably close and fine; it is singularly rich in delicate traits which might easily escape our observation, but which are nevertheless of vital consequence to a just apprecia tion of the drama in larger aspects. The A anyone is thus a peculiarly exacting subject for a commentator. In estimating the shortcomings of an attempt to illustrate it, it may at least be hoped that the critic will not altogether forget the difficulties of the task. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sophocles, Vol. 1: The Plays and Fragments; With Critical Notes, Commentary, and Translation in English Prose La'tus, king of Thebes, being childless, asked the oracle of Apollo at Delphi whether it was fated that a son should be born to him. The answer was, I will give thee a son, but it is doomed that thou leave the sunlight by the hands of thy child: for thus hath spoken Zeus, son of Cronus, moved by the dread curse of Pelops, 'whose own son (chrysippus) thou didst snatch from him and he prayed all this for thee.' When a son was indeed born to La'fus of Iocasta his wife, three days after the birth he caused it to be exposed in the wilds of Mount Cithaeron. An iron pin was driven through the feet of the babe, fastening them together - that, if perchance it should live to be found by a stranger, he might have the less mind to rear a child so maimed from which rnaiming the child was afterwards called Oedipusg. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sir Richard Jebb's seven-volume edition of the works of Sophocles, published between 1883 and 1896, remains a landmark in Greek scholarship. Jebb (1841-1905) was the most distinguished classicist of his generation, a Fellow of Trinity College, Cambridge, and University Orator, subsequently Professor of Greek at Glasgow University and finally Regius Professor of Greek at Cambridge, and a Member of Parliament for the University. Each volume of the edition contains an introductory essay, a metrical analysis, an indication of the sources used to establish the text, and the ancient summaries ('arguments') of the play. The text itself is given with a parallel English translation, textual collation and explanatory notes, and an appendix consisting of expanded notes on some of the textual issues. The quality of Jebb's work means that his editions are still widely consulted today. This volume contains Oedipus Tyrannus.

Book Sophocles and the Greek Language

Download or read book Sophocles and the Greek Language written by Albert Rijksbaron and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2017-07-31 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume offers an extensive overview of the various ways in which Sophocles’ use of the Greek language is currently being studied. Greatly admired in antiquity, Sophocles’ style only became a serious subject of investigation with Campbell’s Introductory essay On the language of Sophocles (1879). Fourteen chapters, divided into three sections (diction, syntax, pragmatics), discuss the linguistic register and use of gnomai in Ajax’ deception speech, Homeric intertextuality, the style of the Sophoclean satyr-plays in relation to tragedy and comedy, the relation between the repetition of words and focalization, the language of blindness, the image of ‘fire’, the use of deictic pronouns, the semantics of the middle-passive and of counterfactuals, the historic present and the constitution of the text, the suggestive power of descriptions, speech-acts, and strategies of politeness.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sophocles, Vol. 1: The Plays and Fragments; With Critical Notes, Commentary, and Translation in English Prose In preparing a second edition of this volume, I have profited by several criticisms with which the work has been favoured, and by various other contributions to the study of Sophocles which have come into my hands since 1883. The modification of detail which is chiefly noticeable in the present edition is the substitution of English for Latin as the language of the critical notes on the text. Without having altered the opinion which I formerly expressed, that Latin possesses unequalled merits for this purpose, I had been led to feel that a combination of Latin critical notes with an English commentary on the same page suffered from a certain want of unity and harmony. There seemed to be also a practical objection, viz., that some readers were harassed by the change of mental attitude involved in turning from a Latin to an English note on the same passage. The intrinsic superiority of Latin as a vehicle of textual criticism could hardly be deemed to outweigh these disadvantages; and it is by this consideration that my choice has now been decided. The Autotype Facsimile of the Laurentian MS. of Sophocles, published in 1885 by the Society for the Promotion of Hellenic Studies, is by far the most important boon ever conferred on students of the text.
