Book Egypt on the Pentateuch s Ideological Map

Download or read book Egypt on the Pentateuch s Ideological Map written by Franz V. Greifenhagen and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2003-04-01 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the references to Egypt in the Pentateuch--twice as dense as in the rest of the Hebrew Bible--in the context of the production of the text's final form during the Persian period. Here, as Greifenhagen shows, Egypt functions ideologically as the primary "other" over against which Israel's identity is constructed, while its role in Israel's formation appears as subsidiary and as a superseded stage in a master narrative which locates Israel's ethnic roots in Mesopotamia. But the presentation of this powerful neighbour is equivocal: a dominant anti-Egyptian stance coexists with alternative, though subordinate, pro-Egyptian views, suggesting that the Pentateuchal narrative was produced within a context of ideological conflict over attitudes towards a land that provided a home for Jewish fugitives and emigrants.

Book The Hebrew Pharaohs of Egypt

Download or read book The Hebrew Pharaohs of Egypt written by Ahmed Osman and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2003-09-19 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A reinterpretation of Egyptian and biblical history that shows the Patriarch Joseph and Yuya, a vizier of the eighteenth dynasty king Tuthmosis IV, to be the same person • Uses detailed evidence from Egyptian, biblical, and Koranic sources to place Exodus in the time of Ramses I • Sheds new light on the mysterious and sudden rise of monotheism under Yuya’s daughter, Queen Tiye, and her son Akhnaten When Joseph revealed his identity to his kinsmen who had sold him into slavery, he told them that God had made him “a father to Pharaoh.” Throughout the long history of ancient Egypt, only one man is known to have been given the title “a father to Pharaoh”--Yuya, a vizier of the eighteenth dynasty king Tuthmosis IV. Yuya has long intrigued Egyptologists because he was buried in the Valley of Kings even though he was not a member of the Royal House. His extraordinarily well-preserved mummy has a strong Semitic appearance, which suggests he was not of Egyptian blood, and many aspects of his burial have been shown to be contrary to Egyptian custom. As The Hebrew Pharohs of Egypt shows, the idea that Joseph and Yuya may be one and the same person sheds a whole new light on the sudden rise of monotheism in Egypt, spearheaded by Queen Tiye and her son Akhnaten. It would clearly explain the deliberate obliteration of references to the “heretic” king and his successors by the last eighteenth dynasty pharaoh, Horemheb, whom the author believes was the oppressor king in the Book of Exodus. The author also draws on a wealth of detailed evidence from Egyptian, biblical, and Koranic sources to place the time of the departure of the Hebrews from Egypt during the short reign of Ramses I, the first king of the nineteenth dynasty.

Book The Bible Says

Download or read book The Bible Says written by Dae Young Choe and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2000-03-29 with total page 173 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most of us begins to read the bible trying to understand our creator God and find out the way to escape from this troublesome world while struggling to cope with this fast running modern society and survive. But, reading through the bible alone would take a year, and yet finding out what it says is still another story. So, many of us close the bible before flipping over several pages and come back to wandering again for the same reason of enormous amount of scriptures and the difficulty to understand. Simply, we are trapped in this busy world of devil and the devil does not allow us to think about where we come from, where we go to and why we live in this world. That was stated in the bible as dead, saying 'And another of his disciples said unto him, Lord, suffer me first to go and bury my father. But Jesus said unto him, Follow me; and let the dead bury their dead. (Matthew8-22)' As the result, we just go to church for self-relief and follow the instructions of the church for no reason and say we obey to God. Yet, still we do not know what God says. Leaving every teaching of religious people and traditional religious idea behind, I tried to hear from God directly through the bible based upon solid rock foundation of common sense that the truth never changes. I did not hesitate to go to the extreme to stand on that foundation and I believe that extreme faith gave me understanding divine only God who is in extreme high place. As the bible says, 'No one can come to Me, unless the Father who sent Me draws him: and I will raise him up on the last day. (John 6-44)', this book is not intended to draw people into belief but to guide God's people that are lost. In other words, it is only for Sons of God. It doesn't necessarily mean that my way is the best way. So anybody who knows the way should follow own way.

Book The Land of the Body

  • Author : Sarah Pearce
  • Publisher : Mohr Siebeck
  • Release : 2007
  • ISBN : 9783161492501
  • Pages : 416 pages

Download or read book The Land of the Body written by Sarah Pearce and published by Mohr Siebeck. This book was released on 2007 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents the first extended study of the representation of Egypt in the writings of Philo of Alexandria. Philo is a crucial witness, not only to the experiences of the Jews of Alexandria, but to the world of early Roman Egypt in general. As historians of Roman Alexandria and Egypt are well aware, we have access to very few voices from inside the country in this era; Philo is the best we have. As a commentator on Jewish Scripture, Philo is also one of the most valuable sources for the interpretation of Egypt in the Pentateuch. He not only writes very extensively on this subject, but he does so in ways that are remarkable for their originality when compared with the surviving literature of ancient Judaism. In this book, Sarah Pearce tries to understand Philo in relation to the wider context in which he lived and worked. Key areas for investigation include: defining the 'Egyptian' in Philo's world; Philo's treatment of the Egypt of the Pentateuch as a symbol of 'the land of the body'; Philo's emphasis on Egyptian inhospitableness; and his treatment of Egyptian religion, focusing on Nile veneration and animal worship.

Book The Matriarchs of Genesis

Download or read book The Matriarchs of Genesis written by David J. Zucker and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2015-08-27 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sarah. Hagar. Rebekah. Leah. Rachel. Bilhah. Zilpah. These are the Matriarchs of Genesis. A people's self-understanding is fashioned on their heroes and heroines. Sarah, Rebekah, Leah, and Rachel--the traditional four Matriarchs--are important and powerful people in the book of Genesis. Each woman plays her part in her generation. She interacts with and advises her husband, seeking to achieve both present and future successes for her family. These women act decisively at crucial points; through their actions and words, their family dynamics change irrevocably. Unlike their husbands, we know little of their unspoken thoughts or actions. What the text in Genesis does share shows that these women are perceptive and judicious, often seeing the grand scheme with clarity. While their stories are told in Genesis, in the post-biblical world of the Pseudepigrapha, their stories are retold in new ways. The rabbis also speak of these women, and contemporary scholars and feminists continue to explore the Matriarchs in Genesis and later literature. Using extensive quotations, we present these women through five lenses: the Bible, Early Extra-Biblical Literature, Rabbinic Literature, Contemporary Scholarship, and Feminist Thought. In addition, we consider Hagar, Abraham's second wife and the mother of Ishmael, as well as Bilhah and Zilpah, Jacob's third and fourth wives.

Book The Role of Unexpected Events in Stories

Download or read book The Role of Unexpected Events in Stories written by Andrea Smorti and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-11-11 with total page 141 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book stems primarily from the intention to make public the seminar entitled "Narratives and Cultural Psychology" held by J. Bruner and C. Feldman in May 2000 in Florence. This seminar represents the point of view of these two authors, at an important moment in their scientific and human careers, on two themes: narratives and interpretative communities. The central concept on which this book works is the Aristotelian concept of peripeteia which, born in the world of art, is developed by Bruner in the field of cognitive and cultural psychology and by Feldman in the concept of interpretative community. Thus the first purpose of this book is to analyze the role and usefulness of this concept in the study of the world of stories and culture The second aim of this book is to explain, clarify and comment on the concept, the theoretical assumptions and the key words used by the two authors, while also exploring the issues addressed. In this way, the author wanted to reflect on what contribution this seminar offers today to the theme of narratives and cultural psychology and what the future prospects might be. This book is aimed at students and scholars interested in exploring the role that stories play in human culture.
