Book excerpt: Excerpt from Songs of the South Shore Songs of the South Shore Natural Things Oh, happy, dancing, gold-brown brook, They ought to bind you in a book, They who in search of something new, The lovely natural things eschew; You do not seem a bit forlorn, While faring forth from dawn to dawn, But just so simply, gladly gay, That it must be the natural way, And that great truth that you will be, Some day enveloped in the sea, Is just the truth, and being so, Does not disturb your even flow. Book Exploring Roots Music

Download or read book Exploring Roots Music written by Nolan Porterfield and published by Scarecrow Press. This book was released on 2004 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From its beginnings in the early 1920s, commercial country music--as performed on stage, on records, radio, and in movies--became an increasingly pervasive and lively part of American life, yet some forty years passed before it was given serious attention by writers, historians, scholars, and students of national culture. The first publication founded for promoting the systematic research and recognition of country music was the John Edwards Memorial Foundation (JEMF) Quarterly at the University of California, Los Angeles, in 1965. Over time, the JEMF Quarterly brought to light the lives and careers of dozens of pioneer musicians, including Alfred G. Karnes, the Carter Family, Riley Puckett, and Buell Kazee, along with details of early commercial radio operations, the sources of many traditional songs, and the reproduction of historical documents. In addition, the early work of many contributors who later became known as major scholars in the field-Archie Green, Charles Wolfe, Norm Cohen, Simon J. Bonner, and Loyal Jones among others-appeared on the pages of the JEMF Quarterly during its 19 years in publication. Exploring Roots Music reprints twenty-seven representative articles published in the JEMF Quarterly over the years, until it ceased publication in 1985. It also includes many illustrations and an introduction that seeks to place the journal in historical perspective and illuminate its central importance to the study of American culture.

Download or read book Polkabilly written by James P. Leary and published by OUP USA. This book was released on 2006-08-10 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While the Goose Island Ramblers are a remarkable group, they are entirely representative of the many bands who, from the 1920s through the 90s, have synthesized an array of "foreign," "American," folk, popular, and hillbilly musical strains to entertain rural, small town, working class audiences throughout the Midwest. Based on more than twenty years of field research, this study of the Goose Island Ramblers alters our perception of what American folk music really is. The music of the Ramblers - decidedly upper Midwest, multicultural, and inescapably American - argues for a most inclusive, fluid notion of American folk music, one that exchanges ethnic hierarchy for egalitarianism, that stresses process over pedigree, and that emphasizes the pluralism of American musical culture. Rootsy, constantly evolving, and wildly eclectic, the polkabilly music of the Ramblers constitutes the American folk music norm, redefining in the process our understanding of American folk traditions.

Book Southern War Songs Camp Fire Patriotic and Sentimental

Download or read book Southern War Songs Camp Fire Patriotic and Sentimental written by William Long Fagan and published by Library of Alexandria. This book was released on 2020-09-28 with total page 383 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The war songs of the South are a part of the history of the Lost Cause. They are necessary to the impartial historian in forming a correct estimate of the animus of the Southern people. Emotional literature is always a correct exponent of public sentiment, and these songs index the passionate sincerity of the South at the time they were written. Poetic merit is not claimed for all of them; still each one embodies either a fact or a principle. Written in an era of war, when the public mind was thoroughly aroused, some may now appear harsh and vindictive. Eight millions of people read and sang them. This fact alone warrants their collection and preservation. A greater number of the songs have been gathered from Southern newspapers. The task has been laborious, but still a labor of love, as no work of this kind has before been offered to the public.
