Download or read book Songs for Simple Hearts written by Scarlett Rush and published by Headline Accent. This book was released on 2014-02-20 with total page 143 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Troianne is an actress who knows about the pitfalls of professional romances. She is always going weak at the knees for all those beautiful celebrities, both men and women, who she perceives to be more famous than she. So how will she hang on to her heart when she finds herself cast alongside her screen idols, Hollywood heart-throbs, and dashing new young actors - all looking fabulous in period costume and all with the run of the sumptuous stately home being used as the backdrop? Fame, four-posters and illicit ménages beckon, but can there possibly be love at the end of it or will she just find herself being duped again? Songs for Simple Hearts is a scintillating tale of what happens when Georgian naughtiness is recreated today. Morals might count for little when all those tight riding britches and plunging necklines get in the way.

Download or read book Ducktails Drive ins and Broken Hearts written by Hank Davis and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 2023-06-01 with total page 491 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: They all tried, but few singers and musicians from the 1950s became stars. Yet many of them had stories to tell that were far more interesting than the ones you already know. Author Hank Davis was bitten by the music bug as a teenager. By the time he entered college in 1959, he was no stranger to New York's recording studios and had a few 45s of his own on the market. Spanning a 45 year career in music journalism, Davis has spent time backstage, in motel rooms, and on tour buses to uncover stories that rarely made the official annals of pop music history. Based on hundreds of hours of interviews and new research, Ducktails, Drive-Ins, and Broken Hearts offers a fascinating, behind-the-scenes look at the winners and losers during rock 'n' roll's formative era. How did a decade as uptight and puritanical as the '50s produce so much cringe-worthy, politically incorrect music? What was it like to see a pale cover version of your latest record climb the charts while yours sat unplayed by mainstream radio stations? How did precious Elvis tapes end up in a Memphis landfill? And who was that thirteen-year-old girl who made a five-dollar vanity record at Sun just two years after Elvis had—and ended up singing backup on "Suspicious Minds" and "In the Ghetto?" This book is a must-read for all fans of '50s music. In the words of Jerry Phillips, son of Sun Records founder, Sam Phillips, "Hank Davis is one of the few guys who really gets it."

Download or read book Heart Songs and Other Stories written by Annie Proulx and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2007-12-01 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Before she wrote the bestselling Brokeback Mountain, Annie Proulx was already producing some of the finest short fiction in the country. Here are her collected stories, including two new works never before anthologized. These stories reverberate with rural tradition, the rites of nature, and the rituals of small town life. The country is blue collar New England; the characters are native families and the dispossessed working class, whose heritage is challenged by the neorural bourgeoisie from the city; and the themes are as elemental as the landscape: revenge, malice, greed, passion. Told with skill and profundity and crafted by a master storyteller, these are lean, tough tales of an extraordinary place and its people.

The columns -- a homesick country boy’s reflections on the comforts, conflicts, and absurdities of living in the modern world -- have become a consistent favorite of Walker County readers, and have been honored multiple times by the Alabama Press Association and Alabama Media Professionals as the outstanding newspaper column in the state. They are collected here in Short's book I Left My Heart in Shanghi, Alabama, along with a new introduction by the author.

Book excerpt: The Song of Songs is a novel by the German writer Hermann Sudermann. Sudermann was a German playwright and novelist. Excerpt:" Good friends were not wanting, of course, who had for years foreseen the event. In fact, they failed to understand how he could have endured it so long—he, the man of genius, of God-given fancy, with the hall-mark of creative restlessness on his thunder-headed brow. Others called him a good-for-nothing, a dirty scoundrel, who ran after innocent girls and enticed young men to gamble. They declared Mrs. Czepanek lucky to be rid of him, and charged Lilly to erase her unworthy father from her memory."

Download or read book The Bab Ballads with Which Are Included Songs of a Savoyard written by W. S. Gilbert and published by Good Press. This book was released on 2019-12-12 with total page 597 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Bab Ballads is an incredible collection of light verses by W. S. Gilbert, illustrated with his own comic drawings. This amusing book gets its title from Gilbert's childhood name, "Bab," meaning a baby. In composing these verses, Gilbert formed his "topsy-turvy" style in which the humor is obtained by setting up a hilarious assumption and working out its logical results, however ridiculous. The Ballads also demonstrate Gilbert's cynical and satirical approach to humor. These ballads became famous on their own and were a basis for plot elements, characters, and songs that Gilbert recycled in the Gilbert and Sullivan operas. People used to read them aloud at private parties, public feasts, and even in the House of Lords. Gilbert did not start calling the collection The Bab Ballads until the first collection was published in 1869. After that, his new verses in his Fun collection were captioned "The Bab Ballads."
