Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A beautifully nostalgic picture book about one grandfather's younger days that shows you're only as old as you feel! "In this affectionate story, three children follow their grandfather up to the attic, where he pulls out his old bowler hat, gold-tipped cane, and his tap shoes. Grandpa once danced on the vaudeville stage, and as he glides across the floor, the children can see what it was like to be a song and dance man. Gammell captures all the story's inherent joie de vivre with color pencil renderings that leap off the pages. Bespectacled, enthusiastic Grandpa clearly exudes the message that you're only as old as you feel, but the children respond--as will readers--to the nostalgia of the moment. Utterly original."--(starred) Booklist.

Book excerpt: One of the most important works of gay literature, this haunting, brilliant novel is a seriocomic remembrance of things past -- and still poignantly present. It depicts the adventures of Malone, a beautiful young man searching for love amid New York's emerging gay scene. From Manhattan's Everard Baths and after-hours discos to Fire Island's deserted parks and lavish orgies, Malone looks high and low for meaningful companionship. The person he finds is Sutherland, a campy quintessential queen -- and one of the most memorable literary creations of contemporary fiction. Hilarious, witty, and ultimately heartbreaking, Dancer from the Dance is truthful, provocative, outrageous fiction told in a voice as close to laughter as to tears.

Art class is over, but Vashti is sitting glued to her chair in front of a blank piece of paper. The words of her teacher are a gentle invitation to express herself. But Vashti can’t draw - she’s no artist. To prove her point, Vashti jabs at a blank sheet of paper to make an unremarkable and angry mark. "There!" she says. That one little dot marks the beginning of Vashti’s journey of surprise and self-discovery. That special moment is the core of Peter H. Reynolds’s delicate fable about the creative spirit in all of us.

Book Songs to Make the Dust Dance

Download or read book Songs to Make the Dust Dance written by Yung-Hee Kim and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2024-06-21 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Breaking through the long-established image of Heian Japan (794–1185) as a culture dominated by ritualized aristocratic values, Yung-Hee Kim presents a picture of a country in transition, filled with a wide variety of common people responding to very ordinary situations. The court does not disappear, but rather becomes part of a larger society inhabited by Buddhist nuns and mountain ascetics, farmers and fishermen, beggars and gamblers. In popular songs called imayo, they express their concerns about religion, love, aging, and even current affairs. In 1179 Emperor Go-Shirakawa compiled a collection of this song genre, which had flourished for two centuries. His twenty-volume anthology, Ryojin hisho, circulated until the middle of the fourteenth century, when it disappeared completely. To the astonishment of the scholarly world, two volumes reappeared early in the twentieth century. It is these texts—a small remnant of a powerful popular literature—that Kim makes accessible to English-speaking readers. Ryojin hisho juxtaposes the sacred with the profane, the high with the low, the male with the female, the old with the new. The songs, in translations that faithfully reflect the sounds and images of the originals, make up the core of this book. They are surrounded by a wealth of material on the imayo genre, the women who sang the songs, the role of court patronage, and other aspects of Heian culture. Far from simply surviving as an aesthetic artifact, the anthology comes to life in its own literary and cultural context. This title is part of UC Press's Voices Revived program, which commemorates University of California Press’s mission to seek out and cultivate the brightest minds and give them voice, reach, and impact. Drawing on a backlist dating to 1893, Voices Revived makes high-quality, peer-reviewed scholarship accessible once again using print-on-demand technology. This title was originally published in 1994.

Book Music Song Dance and Theater

Download or read book Music Song Dance and Theater written by Melvin Delgado and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2017-10-26 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The performing arts is one particular area of youth community practice can that can be effectively tapped to attract youth within schools and out-of-school settings, or what has been referred to as the "third area between school and family." These settings are non-stigmatizing, highly attractive community-based venues that serve youth and their respective communities. They can supplement or enhance formal education, providing a counter-narrative for youth to resist the labels placed on them by serving as a vehicle for reactivity and self-expression. Furthermore, the performing arts are a mechanism through which creative expression can transpire while concomitantly engaging youth in creative expression that is transformative at the individual and community level. Music, Song, Dance, and Theater explores the innovative programs and interventions in youth community practice that draw on the performing arts as a way to reach and engage the target populations. The book draws from the rich literature bases in community development and positive youth development, as well as from performing arts therapy and group interventions, offering a meeting point where innovative programs have emerged. All in all, the text is an invaluable resource for graduate social work and performing arts students, practitioners, and scholars.

  • Release : 2018-03-27
  • ISBN : 9781985382817
  • Pages : 114 pages

Download or read book Dance Again written by Nathan Peterson and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2018-03-27 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From singer-songwriter Nathan Peterson (So Am I), comes a book of reflections about life, rest, and presence in the midst of grief. Written as a follow-up to So Am I, Peterson shares lessons learned during the 14 months following the passing of his one-year-old daughter, and explores the possibility that grief is not just a means to an end -- a necessary step on the road to healing -- but that grief is an end in itself -- that grief is healing. This book is not only for those who have lost a loved one. It is not a how-to book on grieving or an account of events. Rather, it is a sharing and an exploration of the inner world of a grieving father and of the beauty and inseparability of the pain, anger, and confusion of grief with healing. Presented as chronological writings from the day Olivia passed away until the Petersons' fifth child was born 14 months later, the chapters are interspersed with Nathan's journal entries from this period of time. Both Peterson's previous book (So Am I) and this book (Dance Again) correspond to albums (with the same titles) released and available on iTunes, Spotify, Amazon, and on his website.
