Book excerpt: An ironically upbeat book that asks some of today’s most inimitable musicians which song they would choose to be the last one they ever hear Variety Best Music Book of 2020 TIME Best Book of Fall 2020 Selection If you could choose the last song you’d hear before you died, what would it be and why? Your favorite song of all time? Perhaps the one you danced to at your wedding? The song from that time you got super stoned and just let the chords speak to you? It’s a hard question that Mike Ayers has thought about for years. In One Last Song, Ayers invites 30 musicians to consider what song they would each want to accompany them to those pearly white gates. Weaving together their explanations with evocative illustrations and poignant interludes—what your song to die to says about you, what songs famous people have died to, and more. The book offers insight into the minds of famous artists and provides an entry point for considering how integral music is to our own personal narratives. Book Not a Song Like Any Other

Download or read book Not a Song Like Any Other written by Mori Ōgai and published by University of Hawaii Press. This book was released on 2004-05-31 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The literary writings of Mori Ōgai (1862-1922), one of the giant figures of the Meiji period, have become increasingly well known to readers of English through a number of recent translations of his novels and short stories. Ōgai was more than a writer of fiction, however. He has long been regarded in Japan as one of the most influential intellectual and artistic figures of his period, possessing a wide range of enthusiasms and concerns, many developed through his early European experiences. Not a Song Like Any Other attempts to reveal the full range of Ōgai’s creative endeavor, providing trenchant examples of his remarkable range, from dramatist and storyteller to poet and polemicist, all translated into English for the first time. The first of seven parts, “The Author Himself,” offers a variety of self portraits and other insights into Ōgai’s character through his essays—laconic, ironic, detached—written over the course of his career. “Mori Ōgai in Germany” reveals his responses to living in Germany in the 1880s and seeing for the first time how his country was being interpreted from the outside. It includes his celebrated and spirited defense of his country, originally published in a German newspaper. “Mori Ōgai and the World of Politics” relates his uneasy reactions to Japanese society at a later phase in his career. The fourth section provides some of the first information available in English concerning his lifelong interest in painting and other aspects of the visual arts in the Japan of his day. Ōgai’s theatrical experiments are briefly chronicled in Part 5. “Four Unusual Stories” offers new evidence of the range of the writer’s interests and ambitions. The final section includes some of the first translations of Ōgai’s poetry available in English. Contributors: Richard Bowring, Sarah Cox, Sanford Goldstein, Andrew Hall, Mikiko Hirayama, Helen Hopper, Marvin Marcus, Keiko McDonald, J. Thomas Rimer, Hiroaki Sato, William J. Tyler.

Book excerpt: Each year as high school solo and ensemble festivals approach, choir directors and voice teachers search for the right songs for their students to sing. There is so much music available for young developing voices, but how can an overworked teacher keep track of it all? Songs for Young Singers, a careful review of more than 2,000 songs printed in over 70 anthologies, has been written to address the needs of choir directors and voice teachers of junior high and high school age students. Section I lists songs by title as well as the anthologies in which they are found . Teachers wishing to explore the works of a particular composer will turn to section II, where songs are listed by composer. In section III, IV, and V, the songs are categorized by Beginning, Intermediate, and Advanced levels for Quick reference. Section VI lists the anthologies reviewed with a detailed description of the vocal demand of each song in the anthology. The songs have been evaluated on seven criteria: melodic contour (including range), phrase length, language, rhythm, accompaniment, harmonic language, and dynamics, and are listed by title, composer, and level of difficulty.

Book Contributions of Selected Rhetorical Devices to a Biblical Theology of The Song of Songs

Download or read book Contributions of Selected Rhetorical Devices to a Biblical Theology of The Song of Songs written by Mark McGinniss and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2011-03-07 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scan any Old Testament Theology for its entry concerning the Song of Songs and you are likely to put the book down and walk away disappointed. In the majority of resrouces the Song is either missing entirely or is given scant pages that do not justice to its divine message. In this book Mark McGinniss seeks to remedy that situation by demonstrating the depth of theology in this ancient love song concerning desire, passion, and sex. Beyond the significant theology of the Song, this book demonstrates how the author of the Song of Songs employed certain literary devices for a specific rhetorical purpose to convey certain theological truths.
