Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jennifer Fulwiler told herself she was happy. Why wouldn't she be? She made good money as a programmer at a hot tech start-up, had just married a guy with a stack of Ivy League degrees, and lived in a twenty-first-floor condo where she could sip sauvignon blanc while watching the sun set behind the hills of Austin. Raised in a happy, atheist home, Jennifer had the freedom to think for herself and play by her own rules. Yet a creeping darkness followed her all of her life. Finally, one winter night, it drove her to the edge of her balcony, making her ask once and for all why anything mattered. At that moment everything she knew and believed was shattered. Asking the unflinching questions about life and death, good and evil, led Jennifer to Christianity, the religion she had reviled since she was an awkward, sceptical child growing up in the Bible Belt. Mortified by this turn of events, she hid her quest from everyone except her husband, concealing religious books in opaque bags as if they were porn and locking herself in public bathroom stalls to read the Bible. Just when Jennifer had a profound epiphany that gave her the courage to convert, she was diagnosed with a life-threatening medical condition-and the only treatment was directly at odds with the doctrines of her new-found faith. Something other than God is a poignant, profound and often funny tale of one woman who set out to find the meaning of life and discovered that true happiness sometimes requires losing it all.

Book Something Other Than

Download or read book Something Other Than written by Linda Cassidy and published by FriesenPress. This book was released on 2023-11-08 with total page 207 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the last century, church attendance and participation in a religious vocation have dropped sharply in the West, accompanied by a rising secularism and growing disillusionment with organized religion. And yet, humanity continues to yearn for a sense of divine meaning in the world about them, something that goes beyond this temporal existence, something that author Linda Cassidy calls Something-Other-Than. In this powerful spiritual memoir, Linda shares the story of her search for meaning and the holiness in all things, baesd on her belief that a direct, personal encounter with the divine provides a truer more lasting pathway to enlightment than following theologies and dogma ordained by others. She describes five pathways available to everyone to approach the divine: the Way of the Book, the Way of Yoga, the Way of Poetry, the Way of the Dream and, in the future, the Way of the Cosmos. Richly accompanied by research and personal experience, her message will inspire readers to explore the ineffable, invisible, and transcendant nature of the human spirit as they walk these paths through her memoir. From dream analysis to learning at the feet of a yoga master, her account of her journey will keep readers turning the page! An engaging and thought-provoking book, this latest offering from Linda Cassidy will propel readers into a quest for their own encounter with the divine.

Book Something More Than Night

Download or read book Something More Than Night written by Ian Tregillis and published by Macmillan + ORM. This book was released on 2013-12-03 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ian Tregillis's Something More Than Night is a Dashiell Hammett and Raymond Chandler inspired murder mystery set in Thomas Aquinas's vision of Heaven. It's a noir detective story starring fallen angels, the heavenly choir, nightclub stigmatics, a priest with a dirty secret, a femme fatale, and the Voice of God. Somebody has murdered the angel Gabriel. Worse, the Jericho Trumpet has gone missing, putting Heaven on the brink of a truly cosmic crisis. But the twisty plot that unfolds from the murder investigation leads to something much bigger: a con job one billion years in the making. Because this is no mere murder. A small band of angels has decided to break out of heaven, but they need a human patsy to make their plan work. Much of the story is told from the point of view of Bayliss, a cynical fallen angel who has modeled himself on Philip Marlowe. The yarn he spins follows the progression of a Marlowe novel—the mysterious dame who needs his help, getting grilled by the bulls, finding a stiff, getting slipped a mickey. Angels and gunsels, dames with eyes like fire, and a grand maguffin, Something More Than Night is a murder mystery for the cosmos. Book Film Philosophy and Reality

Download or read book Film Philosophy and Reality written by Nathan Andersen and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-12-21 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Film, Philosophy, and Reality: Ancient Greece to Godard is an original contribution to film-philosophy that shows how thinking about movies can lead us into a richer appreciation and understanding of both reality and the nature of human experience. Focused on the question of the relationship between how things seem to us and how they really are, it is at once an introduction to philosophy through film and an introduction to film through philosophy. The book is divided into three parts. The first is an introduction to philosophy and film, designed for the reader with little background in one or the other subject. The second examines the philosophical importance of the distinction between appearance and reality, and shows that reflection upon this distinction is naturally provoked by the experience of watching movies. The final part takes a close and careful look at the style and techniques of Jean-Luc Godard’s groundbreaking film Breathless in order to illustrate how such themes can be explored cinematically. The book addresses topics such as: Film: what it is and how to understand it The methods and concerns of philosophy The nature of cinematic appearances The history of metaphysics The relationship between cinema and life The philosophical relevance of film techniques. With a glossary of key thinkers, terms, and concepts, as well as sections on suggested films and further reading, this textbook will appeal to lecturers and students in undergraduate philosophy and film courses, and in courses focused on Philosophy of Film, Philosophy and Film, or Film-Philosophy.

Book excerpt: Unique in all of literature, the Confessions combines frank and profound psychological insight into Augustine's formative years along with sophisticated and beguiling reflections on some of the most important issues in philosophy and theology. The Confessions discloses Augustine's views about the nature of infancy and the acquisition of language, his own sinful adolescence, his early struggle with the problem of evil, his conversion to Christianity, his puzzlement about the capacities of human memory and the nature of time, and his views about creation and biblical interpretation. The essays contained in this volume, by some of the most distinguished recent and contemporary thinkers in the field, insightfully explore these Augustinian themes not only with an eye to historical accuracy but also to gauge the philosophical acumen of Augustine's reflections.

  • Author : Craig Bakker
  • Publisher : Wipf and Stock Publishers
  • Release : 2023-03-07

Download or read book Not Just Private written by Craig Bakker and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2023-03-07 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Both within the church and outside of it, popular discourse around sex is often shallow and individualistic. This is especially true on the topic of sex outside of marriage. Not Just Private explains how our sexual practices can and should stem from our deeply held, uniquely Christian convictions--convictions that mean we cannot talk about sex apart from Christian community or Christian character. Laying out those foundations allows us to recover Christian insights that many of us have lost and to identify the cultural syncretism that has crept into our churches. With these foundations in view, we can see how sex is not about following rules or avoiding harm but rather about producing certain kinds of individuals and communities. This is a book for Christians who want to be chaste but are not sure why they should be. This is also a book for non-Christians wondering why some Christians practice what Oscar Wilde described as the greatest sexual perversion: namely, chastity. In the end, Not Just Private shows both how Christian perceptions and beliefs are deeply at odds with the practice of extramarital sex and how the perceptions and beliefs that support extramarital sex are unchristian.

Book Divine Impassibility

  • Publisher : Wipf and Stock Publishers

Download or read book Divine Impassibility written by Richard E. Creel and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2005-06-21 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this volume, Richard Creel sets forth a thesis that offers a third way to approach divine impassibility. Defining impassibility as imperviousness to causal influence from external factors, Creel sketches a path between Aquinas and Hartshorne, by asserting that once this definition is accepted, one must still distinguish the various respects in which God is or is not impassible. Virtually no one would dispute that the divine nature is impassible. God will never cease to be God, no matter what happens in creation. With respect to the divine knowledge and will, however, there are conflicting views. Creel claims that God's will is impassible because God knows everything that can be accomplished by divine power. Yet, unlike Aquinas, Creel believes that God has this knowledge in virtue of a 'plenum' of possibilities eternally coexistent with the divine being. The absolute is not simply God, but rather God plus the 'plenum'. Creel suggests that God's knowledge is passible with respect to the contingent future actions of creatures. God knows these actions, therefore, not in their presentiality from all eternity, as Aquinas would hold, but only as they happen and become actual. God's will, however, remains immediately impassible because the divine will is ordered to possibilities, not actualities. God never has to wait until after we do something in order to decide his response to it. He has eternally decided his response to all that we might do. Ultimately God's feelings remain impassible, no matter what concrete decisions human beings make, because the basic intent of the divine plan for us is always achieved: we exercise our freedom to choose for or against God. God is impassible with respect to the divine nature, divine will, and divine feelings; but God is passible with respect to the divine knowledge of future contingent events.

Book Plato s Forms in Transition

Download or read book Plato s Forms in Transition written by Samuel C. Rickless and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2006-11-23 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is a mystery at the heart of Plato's Parmenides. In the first part, Parmenides criticizes what is widely regarded as Plato's mature theory of Forms, and in the second, he promises to explain how the Forms can be saved from these criticisms. Ever since the dialogue was written, scholars have struggled to determine how the two parts of the work fit together. Did Plato mean us to abandon, keep or modify the theory of Forms, on the strength of Parmenides' criticisms? Samuel Rickless offers something that has never been done before: a careful reconstruction of every argument in the dialogue. He concludes that Plato's main aim was to argue that the theory of Forms should be modified by allowing that forms can have contrary properties. To grasp this is to solve the mystery of the Parmenides and understand its crucial role in Plato's philosophical development.
