Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Between the Watchung Mountains to the north and the Sourland Mountains to the west lies the fertile valley of the Raritan River. Stout Dutch, Huguenot, German, Scottish, and English settlers began to cultivate family farms here as early as the 1680s. For almost a hundred years, the tramp of soldiers' feet and sounds of cannons had been unknown, but that was about to change. With its location astride two major routes between New York and Philadelphia, it is little wonder that Somerset County became the "Crossroads of the Revolution." A friendly populace and the protection of the mountains made this a safe haven for General Washington's army. His soldiers camped for three winters, including the harshest winter of the Revolution, in Somerset and in the adjacent areas of central New Jersey. Washington spent more time here than any other place during the War for Independence. It was in this historically significant county that the first military academy in the nation was built, the 13-star flag was first flown over American troops after its adoption by Congress, and the "Regulations for the Infantry of the United States" was written by General von Steuben.

These images, printed as postcards and sold in general stores across the country, survive as telling reminders of an important era in Americas history. This fascinating new history of New Jerseys Somerset County showcases more than two hundred of the best vintage postcards available.

They represent many years of research and labor, and were published in one of the county papers sometime in the seventies. After their publication corrections were made by the Doctor up to the time of his death. The publisher here wishes to return thanks to A. P. Sutphen. Book excerpt: The landscape of Somerset has changed in many ways over the last century. From Glastonbury to the Quantax, Somerset Then & Now provides a fascinating snapshot of the county in days gone by. The older photographs in this book were taken by local photographer Henry Montague Cooper between 1904 and 1906. Cooper owned one of the county’s first motorcars, and used it to tour extensively with his camera. His photographic record of Somerset surpasses that of every other local photographer. Comparing his Somerset to the modern county of today reveals many changes: the mechanisation of farming has resulted in the loss of hedgerows, and flail cutting in the loss of trees in hedges bordering roads. Somerset’s traditional industries have now gone, and many ways of life with them. However, much still remains unaltered in the heart of this sleepy rural county, and this book celebrates the unchanging beauty of ‘the land of summer’.

Book excerpt: For each book that is purchased online, we will donate one book to an educational program for either kids or the elderly! The Somerset Hills is a group of five beautiful towns in the northern section of Somerset County, New Jersey including Bedminster, Bernards Township, Bernardsville, Far Hills, Peapack & Gladstone. New Jersey is often referred to as the "Cockpit of the American Revolution" and many of these images tie back to the history of the Revolutionary War and the birth of the great American Experience. We give great thanks for this project to Linda Arnold, a great friend of our local history and a artist that focuses on the beauty of the area. Also, a big thanks goes out to the Somerset Hills chapter of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) that shared their 1982 coloring book effort. It was with great pleasure and an honor to work on this collection of coloring images to allow our local young artists the opportunity to learn while they color. The Historical Society of the Somerset Hills (THSSH) will always welcome young artists to autograph and bring their artwork to the Brick Academy and show their creations.

Book Somerset County in Vintage Postcards

Download or read book Somerset County in Vintage Postcards written by John E. Jacob and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2001 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Somerset County, named in honor of Lord Baltimore's sister Lady Mary Somerset, was first established by the Colony of Maryland in 1666, it encompassed more than 16,000 square miles on the Eastern Shore, including what are today's Worcester and Wicomico Counties and part of lower Delaware. By the end of the 18th century, the county, much smaller in geography by then, had become home to more than 15,000 residents. Communities such as Crisfield, Deal Island, Princess Anne, Smith Island, and others have thrived since that time, with the industries of agriculture, seafood, and tourism sustaining the hardworking and spirited residents who have made their home in this county by the Chesapeake Bay.
